Catherine’s eyes glimmered in the low light, but her voice was steady.
“Gavin, you heard wrong. Lara said she and Harrison are trying for a baby.”
A shaft of light caught her face, lighting up those striking eyes of hers. They were so clear and deep, black and white perfectly defined. If Gavin hadn’t heard everything with his own ears, he might have actually believed her.
“You’re lying to me. The baby is Lance’s, isn’t it?”
Catherine’s expression tightened. Gavin might be clueless at work, but when it came to gossip, he didn’t miss a beat.
She stayed quiet, so Gavin’s grin only grew wider.
“So what’s really going on between you and Lance?”
Catherine had no idea how to explain. That marriage was over and done, and there was no point dragging it up again, not when it would only make things messier. But if she didn’t say anything, nobody would believe there was nothing between her and Lance. Not Gavin, anyway.
“Did he harass you at work or something?”
Gavin’s mind was running wild, jumping to the worst possible conclusions.
“Don’t tell me Lance is trying to have a baby with you behind Adelina’s back. What a jerk!”
Catherine tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, forcing herself to stay calm.
“It’s not like that. It was a one-time mistake, and Lance doesn’t even know about the baby.”
Gavin looked at her like she was speaking another language. “A mistake? He has no idea, and you’re just… keeping it?”
“What else am I supposed to do? Just wait for Lance to find out and fight me for the baby?”
“How do you know he’d fight you? What if he just asked you to marry him and become Mrs. James?”
Gavin stepped into the light, his ridiculously good-looking face alive with curiosity.
Catherine kept her tone even. “I know Lance. I’m not willing to risk it, and I’m not holding out hope. I need you to keep this secret, Gavin. Whatever you want in exchange, just say it.”
“Do I look like the kind of guy who’d take advantage of you?” Gavin immediately sobered. “This is serious. Of course I’ll keep your secret.”
Catherine didn’t buy it for a second. She’d only told him to keep him in check, betting everything on this one risky move.
