Lucas’s POV

The letter arrived at exactly seven–thirty in a clean envelope.

Vance held it out to me with both hands, standing stiff as he bowed in respect. “Your Majesty… a message from Lady Fiona. We couldn’t even see the messenger.”

I didn’t reply as I took it and opened it, hoping it wasn’t what I was thinking. It was only an hour before our dinner date, or whatever it could be called.

Placing it on my desk, I read through.

“Thank you for your help, but I won’t be attending dinner tonight. My boyfriend wouldn’t approve.”

For a full five seconds, I simply stared at the words, rereading them as if they would somehow change into something else.

She didn’t just reject me, did she?

Vance shifted under the weight of the silence as he tried to see what was written.

“Fiona has a boyfriend? Not possible!” A deep growl rumbled in my chest, and even my inner wolf bellowed in anger as a sudden hatred grew in my heart towards whoever the boyfriend

was.

But every detail about her that night told me she wasn’t bonded. Every reaction in her pulse told me she wasn’t claimed by anyone. Even my touch made her shiver.

Or was it me overthinking?

She must be lying about having a boyfriend, and she expected me to believe it.

My jaw tightened, fists clenched.

“She rejected your invitation?” Vance whispered, as if saying it too loudly would get him killed.

“She said she has a boyfriend!” I spat, and I could see his surprise; his jaw dropped.

“A lady refused your dinner proposal because she has a boyfriend? Who the fuck is the boyfriend?” Vance was awestruck because no one has ever rejected me.

I wasn’t desirable in the romantic sense because of the curse, but I was the Lycan King, and every pack wanted a relationship with me. Every family offered their daughters and girls

My fingers tightened on the paper until it crumpled.

Vance cleared his throat. “Should I… arrange a response?”

“No.”

“I think she is scared to die like your other chosen mates,” he sighed.

“Which is more dangerous? Rejecting my dinner proposal or becoming my chosen mate!” I snarled, my eyes red.

“The former, because your death would come quicker!” He answered calmly with a bow.

finish tracking her identity?” I asked, ready to show her why I was the dreaded Lycan.

Vance swallowed. “We… ran into some complications.” –

“Explain.”

His voice wavered. “We traced her number and profile into a dead end. A false identity placed in Cetherland. The trail led us to a girl named ‘Frances Welton‘, who lives in a condo, works a desk job, and has no link to her.”

A false profile? Did she just build a ghost to prevent me from tracing her?

Interesting.

“And what about the digital trail?” I asked, fuming.

“Every server we entered led us into a loop. It redirected back, wiped, then vanished. Our tracker wolves said it was like… chasing a shadow. I don’t know how she did all that.”

She really prepared before sending this rejection.

Someone must have helped her, but how could she get such a guru to create all this in a short period of time?

Vance hesitated again. “We tried accessing her records through the pack registries. All her original files… gone. Initially I found out she was the abandoned daughter of the Beta, but now there is no record of that.”

I looked up sharply. “Gone too?”

“Yes. And I wonder why she would wipe out her history,” he mumbled, shaking his head.

“But her family must know where she is.” I growled in frustration.

“I don’t think so. She is no longer their daughter, and aside from that, they don’t care if she is dead or alive. She walks away from the family and never comes back.”
