2 MONTHS LATER
Dina
“Dina, Summers, Plaris Cooperation.”
“Transfer the phone to Luther. I want to speak with him.” a woman snapped in an authoritative tone I'd heard a billion times before. I held back a sigh as I replied.
“I’m sorry. Mr Kane isn't available right now-“
“Im not talking to you. Pass the phone to him now. He needs to answer me why the hell he hasn’t texted me back. 12 freaking missed calls and no answer?”
“I’m sorry but-”
“You're sorry? Of course you're incompetent enough to fail a simple task. You must just be a dumb bimb-”
I muted the call, letting her rave, her voice and insults screeching through my office. I shut my eyes tightly. A headache was building up for the third time.
It had been a month since I started working here and it was both better and worse than I expected. Better because it was a thousand miles more comfortable than the constricted office space in my former company and worse because I had to work with Luther.
True to my thoughts, he never failed to torment me during my time here.
I didn’t know which one was more torturous, staying by his side during the meetings, his constant pestering, the gruesome workload he dumped on me, or managing his calls.
Every two to three days was another torment of receiving the calls of whichever woman he had slept with and jilted. I was subjected to curses at their demands and once I rejected them on his orders I was met with tears, rage or on the single occasion, an over-description or things I didn’t want to hear. I knew that he was doing it to mock me. That was confirmed by how he smiled mockingly at me every time I was done taking one of his calls.
I could do this. for the sake of my mother I would go through with this.
He made it very hard to not murder him.
Taking the files I'd sorted out, I knocked on his office door before entering.
“Here are the files you needed MR Kane,” I said in a business-like tone, “Your latest paramour called.”
There it was again. That smirk.
“You dealt with it I suppose.” he sighed,
“They should reach you directly. I don't know what they see in you.” I muttered lowly as I walked away.
I was stopped by a hand suddenly pulling me back. Shock filled me as he leaned in.
“I'm sure you would like to know.” He winked, making me blink frantically.
What was he doing?
‘Calm down Dina, you need this job.’ I reminded myself.
When I entered I faced him on the desk with his hands around his head. He didn't look up.
“Mr Kane, you called,” I spoke, “Id you need a reminder of your schedule, you have a meeting reserved for-”
“Stop!” He shouted, making me flinch. When I recovered I watched him raise his head, revealing his face.
He sighed looking defeated. As he looked at me, I was met with a weary look I'd never seen from him. There was no smirk. Not a smug look in sight.
“I need your help. You need to do something for me.” he said.
I shuffled on my feet, trying to calm my nerves. I had never seen him like this and that made me nervous. What could have happened to make him act like this? from what I knew the company was in shape and there was nothing filled with tension that I'd noticed until his sudden switch a day ago. Now he was asking me to do something for him. not commanding or ordering as a boss like he often did. Asking.
That in itself worried me. I knew it was serious. Just because I despised working here didn’t mean that I was going to revel in failing my job.
“What do you need?” I asked, trying to calm my racing thoughts as he looked at me.
I swore I saw conflict swimming in his gaze before he stood up, leaning towards me. I waited for what he would say next.
“Marry me.”
