Chapter 10 The Business Event

That night, after Avery came home from work, he heard what had happened. He took off his suit jacket, handed it to Mary, and knocked on Hathaway’s bedroom door.

“Hath, growing a backbone now, are we?” Avery said with a smile. “But seriously, even if you picked Calvin or Lucas, you still shouldn’t pick Lorenzo. The guy’s a total nerd.”

“Don’t talk him down.” Hathaway flipped over the newspaper she was reading and snapped, “He’s way better than Jeremiah. Avery asked, “You’re only saying that because you’re mad at Jeremiah, right? Honestly, I don’t want you hiding from the problem every time something happens.”

“I’m not.” Hathaway frowned. “Avery, I’m not throwing a tantrum, and I’m not jealous. I really don’t like him at all anymore./ REALLY DON’T!”

Avery froze for a second. He didn’t know whether he should believe her.

Hathaway looked up from the newspaper and said, “Can you talk to Mom and Dad? I’m not marrying Jeremiah. Just tell them I’m going to date Lorenzo.”

Avery asked, “Then tell me. What part of Lorenzo attracts you?”

Hathaway replied, “He’s young. He respects my thoughts. Exactly my type.”

Avery went quiet for a while. He admitted that getting Jeremiah to always listen to Hathaway was impossible.

Lorenzo, on the other hand, was gentle and polite. He did seem much more obedient than Jeremiah. Avery nodded. “Fine. You’ve convinced me.”

Hathaway smiled, “You’re the best, Avery.”

At that moment, Hathaway couldn’t help thinking of Celeste and asked, “By the way, how are you doing with Celeste?”

Avery used to avoid blind dates whenever he could. This time, though, he had agreed to one and started seeing Celeste. Hathaway knew Celeste was his first blind date and would also be his last. They would get married.

Avery had only met her a few times so far. He replied, “She seems like a good girl.”

Hathaway knew Celeste had fallen for Avery the first time she saw him. But right now, Avery still had a bit of a soft spot for Jessica, so he wasn’t very interested in Celeste.

“Our family really needs a good girl,” Hathaway said.

“We’ll keep seeing how it goes.” Avery nodded. He was always distant when it came to his own matters and didn’t seem willing to share much.

Seeing his reaction, Hathaway pressed her lips together. She didn’t want Celeste to get hurt.

She said, “I don’t think Jessica is right for you. Celeste is the one who suits you.”

“Don’t talk nonsense. I’m not into her,” Avery retorted.

Hathaway’s brows drew together. She had mentioned two people in one sentence, but Avery had only responded to the part about Jessica.

The man she had once loved and her own brother had both liked Jessica. At that moment, her heart ached for both herself and Celeste.

After Avery left Hathaway’s room, he went to Conrad’s study.

“Dad, since Hath says she likes Lorenzo now, maybe we should let Jeremiah go. Jeremiah isn’t the type she can control. He doesn’t like Hath. If we force him to marry her, it might only make things worse,” Avery advised.

Conrad understood that perfectly well. He was just worried Hathaway was acting out of anger.

Besides, Jeremiah was a rare talent. In all of Bayridge, there wasn’t another young man more capable than him.

When they arrived at the hotel, Avery exchanged greetings with the host for a while.

While Avery was talking, Hathaway looked around. In the past, she had never liked these events full of older businesspeople. They always felt dull and stiff to her.

Hathaway recognized the person speaking with him. He was the chairman of a well-known company in Bayridge, someone with real status.
