Chapter 11 Been Kicked Out
Hathaway was sleeping, her mind in a daze.
In her dream, she tumbled down a tall flight of stairs. She screamed and jolted awake from the nightmare.
The room around her was dead silent.
The alarm clock on the nightstand showed a little past 4 AM. Hathaway simply got out of bed and gave up on sleep.
Since Jeremiah had already started making plans for the Kingsley family, even sending his own private secretary to stay by Preston’s side, she couldn’t afford to drag her feet either.
Even though she hadn’t slept well, Hathaway still got up early and headed to the company.
She had an egg and some toast in the car.
Once she walked into the elevator, she pressed the button for the HR floor.
She hadn’t waited for Avery to go to work together today.
When Avery woke up and heard from Mary that Hathaway had already left for work, he froze for a moment, almost unable to believe it.
He thought, ‘Wow, since when is Hathaway so career-driven?’
After breakfast, Avery was driving to the office when he got several calls from the company. Every single one was a complaint about Hathaway.
He was confused as hell, but his first instinct was still to push back. “Hathaway wouldn’t be that reckless. Don’t badmouth her. Let’s talk face-to-face when I get to the office.”
After hanging up, Avery muttered, “What the hell is going on?” Then he stepped harder on the gas and rushed to the office.
By the time he arrived, the company was already in chaos.
Hathaway had drafted a long list of twenty names. She had declared that they were to be fired and told them to pack their things and get out right away.
The employers were discussing and complaining.
“Ms. Whitmore surely changes fast. Last time I saw her, she was polite. Now, she’s politely telling people to get lost.”
“It’s almost Christmas. Firing people now? Is this about dodging year-end bonuses?”
“Conrad is such a reasonable man. How did he end up with such an unreasonable daughter?”
The employees kept talking, none of them noticing Avery’s arrival.
“You seem to have a lot to chat about, huh?” Avery asked, his face blank as he walked past with his hands in his pockets. The office area went silent at once.
One employee turned pale and stammered, “Mr. Whitmore, we…”
Avery ignored them. He didn’t stop and went straight to Hathaway’s office.
Inside, Hathaway was arguing with an older employee. Torn pieces of a Termination Agreement were scattered across the floor.
Avery frowned at that scene. Worried that others would see or hear something, he stepped inside and shut the door.
When Max Lane saw Avery, he let out a sigh. “Mr. Whitmore, thank goodness you’re here.
“We’ve worked our tails off for Whitmore Group for years. If the company wants to fire us, fine, at least give us a reason. Ms. Whitmore fired us without telling why. If word gets around, every employee will feel betrayed.”
“Mr. Lane, can you let us talk alone?” Avery asked Max to leave.
Then, only Hathaway and Avery remained in the office.
Avery picked up the list on the desk. Lately, he really couldn’t figure Hathaway out anymore. He spoke up. “You’re a secretary to the chairman, and now you’re doing HR’s job? Tell me why.”
Hathaway’s face was tight with frustration. She hadn’t expected these people to be so hard to deal with. Even paying compensation out of her own pocket hadn’t be Successfully unlocked!
In her last life, the Whitmore family had controlleu une eau Dayuges energy industry. Yet in only two short years, Jeremiah had eaten away at it and swallowed it whole without causing even the slightest ripple in the capital market.
But Hathaway knew they hadn’t started working for Jeremiah yet.
In other words, she had no proof now. And without proof, she couldn’t explain a thing.
“Did we neglect your feelings? Is that why you’ve become like this?” Avery looked at Hathaway. Ever since she said she liked Lorenzo, he had felt that something about her was different.
He added, “I honestly can’t figure out what the point of all this is.”
Hathaway replied, “If they’re not loyal, why keep them?”
“Not loyal?” Avery almost laughed out. “How are they not loyal? Did you find anything?”
Hathaway was stuck. She knew all of this only because she had lived once before.
With no better reasons to explain, she could only soften her voice and coo, “Avery, can you trust me? Pretty please.”
Avery didn’t budge. “I can take your side on anything else, no questions asked. When it comes to the company, Dad and I can’t let you do whatever you want.”
Conrad had gone to the factory that day, but after hearing what had happened, he rushed over too.
