hapter 13 The Misunderstanding
Leo drove around aimlessly for a while. Then Hathaway suddenly had Leo swing by the east side of Crystal Lake.
Whitmore Group’s factories were built in that direction. Even at 7 PM, the entire factory area was still brightly lit.
“Your family owns this factory?” Leo asked.

He knew Whitmore Group’s offices were downtown, while the factories sat out in the suburbs and covered a massive
amount of land.
Since Hathaway had specifically asked him to drive over here, it had to be one of Whitmore Group’s plants.
Hathaway nodded. “There are 30,000 workers here.”
Christmas was right around the corner, so everyone was working overtime to finish the last export shipment before the holidays.
Hathaway didn’t go inside. Far off in the distance, the security guard noticed a car parked near the factory gates, but he didn’t recognize it, so he didn’t come out to ask questions.
Hathaway simply stood outside quietly and watched in the dark. She could hear the sounds of people working inside. The steady noise of the machines strangely felt warm and familiar to her.
In her last life, the company had laid off the workers, sold the factories, and even sold off every last piece of scrap metal inside.
Avery had only kept part of the equipment. Back then, he had still dreamed of starting over from nothing like their grandfather and rebuilding the family business from scratch.
But miracles never came. Luck never returned to the Whitmore family.
“They work so hard.” Leo let out a breath of white fog and sighed.
Hathaway nodded. In her last life, she never found out where those workers had ended up.
No matter what, Whitmore Group had failed them. They had lost several months of salaries.
The workers had stayed loyal because they believed such a huge company couldn’t possibly collapse. But Whitmore Group really had fallen, and the Whitmore family had let them down.
Hathaway pulled her coat tighter around herself, trying to hide the chill spreading through her body.
She sighed, “Leo, what am I supposed to do? I can’t convince my dad.”
She couldn’t even fire a few people, let alone change the future of the company.
Listening to her words, Leo was completely confused. He had never seen Hathaway look so sad before. He had no idea. what had happened to her.
He wondered, ‘Did Whitmore Group run into financial trouble or something? But I haven’t heard anything.’
“Hey, it’s freezing out here,” Leo said as he gritted his teeth and turned on the heat in the car. “Let’s head back.” Hathaway looked at the factory one more time before finally getting back into the car.
When Hathaway got home, it was already late.
Conrad hadn’t gone to bed yet. He had been waiting for Hathaway to come back before he could sleep.
As soon as Hathaway entered the house, she saw her father sitting in the living room. She walked over and said, “Dad, I
went to see the Crystal Lake factory just now. A lot of workers are still there doing overtime.”
Conrad paused. When he wasn’t at the office, he spent most of his time at the factory. It was normal for him to eat with the workers in the shop.
He hadn’t expected Hathaway to go there so late at night.
Conrad warned her, “The roads around there are narrow. It’s not safe. Don’t go there too often.”
“Okay.” Hathaway thought for a moment, then threw herself into her father’s arms. “Dad, have you ever thought about this? We’re not only responsible for those twenty people. We also have 30,000 workers at the factory. We’re responsible for them too.”
Conrad stroked Hathaway’s hair. Of course he knew what she meant by suddenly bringing this up.
She had never liked working. She had suddenly joined the company and, just as suddenly, wanted to fire a whole group of people.

Chapter 13 The Misunderstanding
V 15 Voucher Those people were longtime employees. Some even had personal ties to the company, and some had been there since the company was first founded.
If there was no reason at all, and he fired them just because his daughter said so, he couldn’t persuade himself to do that.
Conrad sighed, “My girl, I built everything from nothing. I’ve lived my whole life with a clean conscience. Now that I’m getting old, I don’t want people calling me ungrateful.
“Those twenty people haven’t done anything wrong. If I really listened to you and fired them, what would the employees think of me? Running a company ain’t like playing a game. You can’t just fire people whenever you feel like it.”
Conrad had always spoiled his daughter, but this time, he couldn’t let her have her way.
Hathaway lifted her face and pulled away from his chest. “Dad, give me one more chance. I’ll prove it to you.”
After saying that, she turned and left without hesitation.
Conrad watched her go back to her room and sighed inwardly.
The next morning, Hathaway still stayed home with nothing to do. But she had already made up her mind. Since the people at the company said she was only firing them to avoid paying bonuses, she would wait until after Christmas.
In the meantime, she would find proof. If those people could work for Jeremiah, then they could sell out Whitmore Group for other benefits too. She refused to believe there was nothing shady going on.
Conrad worried that he had been too harsh yesterday and that Hathaway might feel down, so he said to Avery, “The company’s about to go on break anyway. There isn’t much work left. I’ll handle it.
“Take Hathaway to the mall. Buy her some clothes. Get her whatever she likes.”,
Avery knew Conrad had sent Hathaway home and that Hathaway had been in a bad mood these past few days.
