The Billionaire Heir Fell for the Wrong Girl (Hathaway Whitmore) novel Chapter 171

Chapter 171

Jessica was unpacking in her assigned room when her thoughts drifted back to that brief stay at the beachside hotel three years ago.

Jeremiah had pulled her into his arms, confessing he wanted her.

But back then, she was still a virgin. If she’d actually slept with him, he would’ve found out the truth.

So she had no choice but to turn him down.

After that, Jeremiah never brought it up again.

He was always good to her.

Jessica never gave it much thought.

She was always proud and aloof, never the type to lower herself or try to please a man, let alone shamelessly throw herself at one.

She always believed they were a power couple and that once they got married, everything would fall into place naturally.

But she never expected Jeremiah to break up with her.

Maybe she’d gotten too comfortable in their peaceful life, let her guard down, and that’s how she ended up in this mess.

If only she’d made a move sooner.

Regret welled up inside her as Jessica gazed out the window, looking through the misty haze at a few villas standing not far off.

A soft knock at the door broke Jessica’s train of thought, and the innkeeper called out from the hallway. “Ms. Kingsley, I brought you some mosquito repellent.”

The innkeeper walked in, carrying the mosquito repellent with an apologetic smile. “We’re a bit short-staffed these days, so if anything’s not up to standard, I hope you’ll forgive us.

“Luckily, the weather should clear up tomorrow, and you’ll get to see the lavender fields.”

Jessica wasn’t here for the lavender. After running into Hathaway and Evelyn, any mood for sightseeing was gone. Her mind was weighed down with worries instead. She asked, “Is Hathaway staying in this building too?”

The innkeeper, not knowing there was any bad blood between them, smiled and said, “Those two girls wanted to be closer to the restaurant, so they picked rooms on this side.”

Jessica asked, “What about my boyfriend?”

“He got caught in the rain and asked me for a new bottle of shampoo. He’s probably in his room taking a shower right now,” the innkeeper replied.

Jessica felt a sudden jolt as she realized her clothes were still soaked from the rain. She’d been so wrapped up in her worries that she hadn’t thought about showering. She checked the bathroom; it might be small, but at least it was clean.

“I’m going to take a shower, so could you give me a moment?” Jessica said.

Meanwhile, Hathaway was feeling frustrated in her room. She wanted to change out of her strappy dress, but all she’d packed were long dresses with skinny straps or off-the-shoulder styles.

She didn’t have a single conservative outfit, except for her nightgown.

Just then, someone knocked on the door. Hathaway nervously asked, “Who is it?”

No one answered.

Hathaway’s heart jumped into her throat. Her face fell as she warned, “If you keep quiet, I’m seriously going to think you’re a ghost.”

“It’s me,” came the gentle voice of the innkeeper, still going door to door with the mosquito repellent.

Hathaway breathed a sigh of relief, her cheeks turning red with embarrassment as she quickly opened the door. “Sorry, I got a little spooked.”

The innkeeper was busy looking for the right repellent and hadn’t heard her before. Once she found the right scent, she smiled and handed it over. “Is this the scent you asked for?”

“Yeah, thanks,” Hathaway said, feeling a little ridiculous for freaking out and thinking it was Jeremiah at the door. But then she reassured herself. Since he brought Jessica along, he wouldn’t do anything shady.

Hathaway set the repellent down and went over to Evelyn’s room.

“What’s up? Did you forget to pack enough clothes?” Evelyn asked, seeing Hathaway rummage through her closet with a pained expression.

Hathaway said, “Why are all your clothes so skimpy?”

Evelyn’s dresses were so short that they barely covered more than the tops of her thighs.

Evelyn shot back, “Have you met me?”

Hathaway was left speechless. Any hope of borrowing something to change was—

Evelyn noticed Hathaway’s frown and asked, “What’s up? Ever since you’ve been frowning nonstop. Don’t want to see them, huh?”

“Those two showed up—”

Hathaway shook her head. “Would you want to see them?”

Of course, neither of them did.

They kept chatting in low voices for a bit, until Leo’s voice rang out from the hallway: “Hey, dinner’s ready! Come downstairs!”

When Hathaway came downstairs, Jeremiah had already showered.

His hair was still damp, hanging loosely with a touch of moisture, and he was dressed in clean, simple casual clothes, looking relaxed and effortlessly cool.
