Chapter 172
After getting to know each other a bit, the group from Soren warmly invited Jeremiah to join them for a sightseeing trip the next day.
They also invited Leo and the other two girls, figuring the more, the merrier.
Leo waved his hand and declined, saying, “We’ve already been around once, so we’ll sit this one out.”
Jeremiah spoke up calmly, saying he planned to catch the sunrise at the summit tomorrow, so he wouldn’t be joining the group outing.
When everyone heard he was going to watch the sunrise, they figured he must be going with Jessica. Nobody wanted to play third wheel and crash their romantic moment, so they all quickly changed their minds.
Hathaway let out a quiet sigh of relief. Jeremiah really is here for a vacation, she thought.
She’d been overthinking things. That night, Hathaway tossed and turned in her room, unable to fall asleep until very late.
The next day, the weather cleared up, and Leo picked out a pink convertible for Hathaway and Evelyn.
They were planning to take the car out to their destination today.
The place was a bit of a drive, but the scenery along the way was gorgeous, and there were places up in the mountains to grab some really good milkshakes. The spot was packed with people.
They were all ready to go and about to head out when they bumped into Jeremiah and Jessica, who were getting back from watching the sunrise.
Jeremiah was wearing a black windbreaker, looking sharp and confident, with the chill of the mountain morning still lingering around him.
Jessica walked at his side, gripping a hiking pole, her eyes shining with the joy of spending time with the guy she liked. But the moment she spotted Hathaway, her smile faded instantly.
“Hey, Jeremiah,” Leo called out. “Did you take the cable car today? We did. The view from up there was amazing.”
The cable car at the summit was the best spot to watch the sunrise.
Jeremiah replied coolly, “No.”
So they’d actually hiked all the way up to the summit.
After Jeremiah finished speaking, he didn’t glance at Hathaway.
He walked off with Jessica, heading straight for the villa.
Leo couldn’t help but wonder, What’s going on with him? He was getting more and more confused by Jeremiah’s attitude.
Meanwhile, Hathaway had already slid into the driver’s seat of the pink convertible. She turned her head and said, “Let’s go.”
Leo was still nursing a heavy hangover from all the drinks last night, and there was no way he’d trust Evelyn with the wheel. So, of course, he handed the keys to Hathaway.
Everyone said she drove like a pro. Leo sprawled out in the back seat, totally relaxed.
Hathaway put on her sunglasses, and Evelyn hopped into the passenger seat. The car slowly rolled out of the resort, with terraced fields stretching out on both sides of the road, the view absolutely stunning.
But barely 300 feet down the road, a bug suddenly crawled onto the lens of Hathaway’s sunglasses, slowly wriggling around.
Hathaway’s heart skipped a beat, and she let out a startled scream. She jerked the steering wheel wildly, and the car shot off the road, barreling straight onto the embankment.
As the car lurched onto the embankment, Leo bolted upright, his face drained of color.
Hathaway, flustered, frantically tossed her sunglasses aside and slammed on the brakes, barely managing to bring the car to a stop.
She jumped out of the car, frantically looking around for the bug.
Evelyn stumbled out, still dizzy and fuming. “Back when you saved Mr. Donovan, you didn’t make a single mistake! So our lives don’t count, huh?”
