Chapter 175
When Hathaway asked Calvin how Jeremiah died over the phone, Calvin fell silent for a few seconds.
He replied in a deep, serious tone, “Why do you care whether he’s alive or dead? Keep your distance from him. He destroyed your family. Do you really want to take him back?
“If you keep throwing yourself at him like this, making yourself look so cheap, have you ever thought about what others will think of you?”
What? Hathaway was stunned.
Calvin had always been gentle and refined; she’d never seen him snap at anyone like this.
She’d asked about Jeremiah’s fate out of curiosity, but the guarded, icy edge in Calvin’s voice made it seem like he was convinced she’d still chase after Jeremiah, no matter how much he’d hurt her.
Why is he talking to me like this? Hathaway wondered.
He knows I time-travelled, too. Does he really think I’ll still be so pathetic and naive? Does he think I’ll fall for the guy who wrecked Whitmore Group and tore my family apart all over again? she thought.
Tears welled up in Hathaway’s eyes before she realized it.
Her heart ached with a bitter heaviness, her mind spinning in confusion.
In that dazed moment, a massive truck suddenly came barreling straight at her. Hathaway hurriedly blinked away her tears, only to realize the truck had swerved across the center line, taking over her lane entirely.
To her right was a steep slope, the truck blocked her path ahead, and there was no room to back up or escape behind her; she was boxed in, nowhere to run.
The screech of brakes tore through the rain, and in the next instant, a thunderous impact shattered the silence.
The car spun out of control, tumbling three and a half times through the air before slamming down the slope, the wreckage scattered everywhere.
As her consciousness faded, all Hathaway felt inside was a cold, empty desolation.
Guess it’s my turn now, Hathaway thought.
Her father died young, her mother somehow stayed sane, and her brother barely made it through. And it was her turn to face the worst.
I got careless, Hathaway realized.
After all the twists and turns, the calamity he’d been dodging finally landed on her.
Swallowed by darkness, the pain was unbearable. Hathaway didn’t have the strength to urge anymore.
“Hathaway?” Calvin’s voice shifted suddenly, his grip tightening on the phone.
His voice was taut with worry as he kept calling out, “Hathaway, where are you?”
The air went dead silent for a moment.
Calvin murmured again, his voice low and dazed, disbelief creeping in. “Hathaway?”
She can’t get into trouble now, not at this crucial moment, Calvin thought. Celeste is finally about to give birth. I really can’t go through all this again because of her.
Calvin quickly hung up and called Leo.
The emergency room at Forburge Hospital was brightly lit, every corner flooded with light. The piercing sound of the emergency bell rang out. “Is she here?”
“Quick, she’s here!” The medical staff rushed forward with a stretcher.
Outside the car, a man carefully lifted the woman out and gently placed her on the stretcher.
The doctor immediately leaned in to check her over; he could tell someone had already tried to stop the bleeding, but her face was very pale, her breathing so faint that it was like she was already slipping away.
Without hesitation, the doctor hooked her up to a ventilator and hurried the stretcher straight into the ER.
Soon, several more cars arrived. Along with the specialists rushing in, one car brought Hathaway’s loved ones, who hurried out to join the others.
Evelyn burst in, visibly panicked. “Where’s the woman from the serious car crash?”
The nurse pointed her in the right direction, and Evelyn rushed off like a gust of wind.
When Evelyn reached the operating room, Leo was slumped against the wall, head hanging in defeat.
“Where is she?” Evelyn asked.
“She’s in surgery,” Leo replied.
“And Jeremiah?”
