The Billionaire Heir Fell for the Wrong Girl (Hathaway Whitmore) novel Chapter 176

Chapter 176

Victor held Evelyn’s phone, glanced at the caller ID, and turned to her with a warning hidden beneath his words. “Ms. Montgomery, you know what to say.

“If Sylvia walks in and sees her daughter battered and lying in a hospital bed, and she can’t handle the shock, you’ll be the one paying the price.”

Evelyn instantly recognized the obvious threat, which made her blood boil.

But in the end, she had no other option. Gritting her teeth, Evelyn picked up the call.

Avery’s worried voice came through the phone. Evelyn forced herself to sound casual, trying to brush him off. “Avery, we’re still out having fun. We’ll be back soon.

“Hathaway’s phone got messed up. Water damage. Mine keeps dying on me. Leo’s off somewhere enjoying himself, hasn’t been with us at all.

“You want her to talk now? Hathaway’s in the shower. I’ll have her call you back as soon as she’s done.

“Going abroad? I really have no clue about that. Ask her when she gets back.”

After hanging up, Evelyn’s shoulders slumped.

With a satisfied look, Victor reminded her, “If the Whitmore family calls again, Ms. Montgomery, stick to the same story and keep them in the dark. You know Sylvia can’t handle the slightest shock.”

Evelyn let out a cold, mocking laugh. “Since when does Jeremiah care if Sylvia can handle a shock? He’s getting creepier by the day; it’s honestly frightening.

“Does he really think he’s some angel with a heart of gold?”

Victor was momentarily taken aback.

He’d been by Jeremiah’s side for years, but he’d never seen a woman dare to throw shade at Mr. Blackwood like that. Ms. Montgomery really is both naive and gutsy, he couldn’t help but think.

Two days later, Hathaway finally woke up.

Her face was drained of all color, her gaze hazy and vacant, and she was so weak she couldn’t raise her hand.

Jeremiah was the first to notice she was awake. He walked over slowly, his tall frame casting a heavy shadow over the hospital bed. His voice was deep and a bit husky: “You’re awake!”

Hathaway blinked, her eyes still unfocused. “Who are you?”

Jeremiah paused, caught off guard. “The guy you love.”

Hathaway’s eyes went wide, which jerked—

Jeremiah let out a low chuckle, his eyes deep. “Guess you didn’t lose your memory after all. I’m still your fiancé. The guy you’re about to marry.”

Hathaway felt the world spin as a wave of dizziness hit her. Her chest tightened, making it hard to breathe, and her breathing grew rapid and shallow.

The doctor outside heard the commotion and rushed in, looking anxious. “Her breathing is unstable. She’s struggling to breathe!”

Hathaway’s face, already deathly pale, looked like she could collapse at any moment.

Jeremiah visibly panicked, stepping back to give the doctor space. He kept silent, afraid to upset her further.

“Please, get him out. I don’t want to see him,” Hathaway gasped, her voice barely audible as she clung to the female doctor’s sleeve. “Where are my friends?”

Before Evelyn stepped into the room, she overheard the nurses chatting at the station.

“Man, talk about devoted. There’s an absolute beauty in the VIP ward.”

“Even when he was giving her blood, he never took his eyes off her. Guess he thinks our little hospital isn’t good enough for his girlfriend. He hasn’t slept at all, and they rushed in a specialist for her.”

“But she’s getting transferred soon. I heard a helicopter’s coming to the hospital roof, and the hospital director and department head are going with her.”
