Chapter 184 Picking Up Celeste
After dropping Hathaway off at home, Jeremiah rushed straight to a business dinner to meet with clients.
On his neck, a few deep, crisscrossing nail marks stood out sharply against his pale skin, impossible to miss. Several businessmen at the table glanced at the marks, their eyes glinting with amusement as they exchanged knowing smiles.
One of them took a sip of his coffee, a teasing smile on his lips. “Mr. Blackwood, you always seem so cool and reserved. Never thought you’d end up with marks like that.”
Jeremiah replied with a lazy, resigned tone, “Can’t help it. My girlfriend’s a handful.”
His words left everyone at the table exchanging puzzled glances. After all, the rumors said Jessica was cold and distant, always so proper and aloof. No one would ever expect her to be lively or mischievous.
But then it clicked for everyone. They all understood. She might be icy in public, but behind closed doors, things were a whole different story.
The next morning, Hathaway went back to the hospital with Sylvia and Joe.
Even though she’d been discharged and was moving around normally, the injuries from the accident still hadn’t fully healed, so she had to come in for regular check-ups.
After the check-up, Joe went to pick up the medicine. Sylvia, still worried about the meds, went with him to the pharmacy to wait in line, leaving Hathaway sitting quietly on a bench in the hallway.
People came and went around her, the air thick with the faint smell of disinfectant. In that quiet moment, her phone suddenly started ringing.
Hathaway glanced at the screen and saw it was Benson calling.
She answered right away. “Benson?”
“Ms. Whitmore,” Benson said anxiously, “Mary asked me to buy groceries today. When I got back, Mrs. Whitmore and Mary were gone. I called and found out Mrs. Whitmore wanted to personally pick out a gift for the baby, so she and Mary went to the mall together.”
“What?” Hathaway blurted out, her heart skipping a beat.
She shot up from the bench, her voice urgent. “Benson, head to the mall right now and make sure you don’t lose sight of them.”
Her heart was pounding, a sense of dread creeping in. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something bad might happen with Celeste so close to giving birth.
She didn’t bother waiting for her mom or Joe. Spotting the car keys on the seat, she grabbed them and rushed toward the parking lot.
She hurried along, slightly out of breath, and reached for the car door, about to get behind the wheel.
Just as Hathaway was about to slide into the driver’s seat, a steady, strong arm reached out and gently guided her away. Nina said with a calm smile, “Ms. Whitmore, let me take the wheel.”
Nina slid into the driver’s seat, and Hathaway quickly got into the passenger seat, buckling her seatbelt.
“Where to?” Nina asked.
“Riverdale Mall,” Hathaway replied.
The engine roared to life, and Nina didn’t waste a second. She spun the car around and sped off toward the mall.
Traffic was heavy, but Nina handled it like a pro, threading the needle between cars, always keeping a perfect distance and smoothly overtaking every vehicle in her way.
Hathaway glanced over at Nina, who looked completely calm. She couldn’t help but admire her.
Nina had an almost ethereal androgynous beauty, sharp, elegant eyes, pale skin, and a confident, masculine energy. If Hathaway hadn’t known she was a woman, she would’ve easily mistaken her for a heartthrob.
What should’ve been a twenty-minute drive turned into just over ten minutes, thanks to Nina’s sharp driving skills. They pulled up right in front of the mall.
Hathaway was on edge the moment they arrived. She didn’t waste a second, throwing open the car door and rushing out. Guilt gnawed at her for ignoring Celeste’s wishes.
Celeste had mentioned wanting to pick out a gift for the baby several times, but everyone at home just told her to order online, not wanting her to go out in crowded places. But Celeste really cared and insisted on choosing the gift herself.
