Chapter 193: It Wasn’t Me
The next day, Jessica went straight to Blackwood Entertainment to find Scarlett.
This was Scarlett’s turf, her entertainment company.
Jessica’s expression was cold as ice. Scarlett had just stepped out of her car, still totally clueless. Jessica stalked right up to her, sizing her up with a piercing glare, her words laced with biting sarcasm. “This was your doing, wasn’t it?”
Scarlett blinked, playing dumb. “What are you even talking about? I seriously don’t get it.”
Jessica scoffed, “Barely out of school and already stirring up trouble. Can’t resist chasing after someone else’s man, huh? Shameless doesn’t even begin to cover it.”
Scarlett had known about Jessica for ages. Trolls were always swarming her socials, throwing shade about her getting too cozy with Jeremiah. But Scarlett always watched with cold indifference, never once stepping in to defend herself.
She stayed silent.
Jessica kept quiet too.
They both knew about each other, but they’d never actually gone head-to-head.
Scarlett never expected Jessica to storm in one day, her face twisted with bitterness and resentment.
Scarlett drawled, “Ms. Kingsley, I honestly have no clue what you’re talking about. Care to spell it out for me?”
Jessica shot a cold glance at Scarlett’s assistant, her tone flat. “Tell her to leave.”
Scarlett told her assistant, “Go on, you can leave now.”
The assistant looked worried. After all, they were out in the open and paparazzi could show up any minute. “Scarlett, make it quick, okay?”
Once the assistant was out of sight, it was just the two of them, facing off. Jessica couldn’t be bothered to keep up her usual act of composure. She thrust her phone right under Scarlett’s nose, her eyes blazing with barely contained fury. “Was this you?”
Just seeing the video made Jessica’s eyes burn with rage, her anger boiling over. She was so furious she wanted to slap Scarlett right then and there, maybe even slam her to the ground and leave her unconscious, just like Hathaway had been.
Scarlett instinctively leaned in, trying to get a better look, but Jessica quickly pulled her phone away. Even with just a fleeting glimpse, Scarlett recognized Mr. Blackwood in the video. Instantly, a chill swept through her.
‘Did someone really catch Jeremiah in bed on camera?’ Scarlett thought, her mind spinning.
After a long, tense silence, she finally stepped aside, letting them leave.
Meanwhile, Hathaway was still at the office, buried in work.
Just as she was about to clock out, Aurelia came in and said, “Mr. Blackwood is here.”
Hathaway never expected Jeremiah to show up at Whitmore Group. Even after she changed her number, he kept calling. She brushed him off a few times and then just ignored him.
But after she’d managed to really get under Jessica’s skin, Hathaway found herself hesitating when it came to Jeremiah.
When she saw him walk in, dressed in a dark suit, she had no choice but to ask Aurelia to step out.
Once Aurelia was gone, Hathaway looked at Jeremiah and said, “Can you not come to my office anymore? If people see us together, it’ll just cause trouble.”
Jeremiah thought she was playing games with him, acting all hot and cold like a real heartbreaker, but he still said, “Let’s grab dinner together.”
“I already ate,” Hathaway replied.
Jeremiah wasn’t buying it. “Seriously? Dinner at five?” His expression darkened as he snapped.
“So what is this? Use me and then ditch me? Is this your way of dumping me, just freezing me out until I get the hint?”
Hathaway thought, ‘I only hooked up with him a few times to get back at Jessica. We were never even dating, so where’s the breakup coming from?’ But she didn’t want to set him off, so she just said, “No, that’s not it.”
She started tidying up her desk, moving slow. “I’ve just been really busy lately.”
“Family stuff, work stuff, everything’s been crazy,” she added.
Jeremiah watched her keeping her distance, then dropped onto the couch, drumming his fingers on the armrest, his face giving nothing away.
Right in the middle of the standoff, a knock sounded at the door. Killian walked in, and Hathaway instinctively glanced at the couch, her expression awkward.
“Ms. Whitmore, want to grab dinner together?” Killian said with a smile. He spotted Jeremiah on the couch and paused. “Oh, Mr. Blackwood’s here too. Care to join?”
Hathaway’s stomach tightened. She quickly said, “No, thanks. Mr. Blackwood and I have something else going on later.”
“Alright, I won’t bother you then,” Killian replied with a polite smile, turning to leave.
As soon as Killian left, Jeremiah fixed Hathaway with a sharp look, suspicion written all over his face. “What’s your deal with him?”
Hathaway replied, raising an eyebrow, “What are you getting at?”
Jeremiah pressed, “Why do you always get all jumpy whenever he’s around?”
That hit her right where it hurt. Killian had been Jeremiah’s right-hand man in his last life, and now he was asking her out to dinner again, something about it just felt off. Hathaway couldn’t shake the worry they’d end up tangled in that same boss-and-underling mess all over again.
Hathaway forced herself to stay calm and shot back, “He’s just one of my employees. Not everyone’s like you, you know. I never mix business with pleasure. I’m not the type to get involved with my secretary or anyone working for me.”
As she said that, a faint blush crept across her cheeks, and she felt her irritation bubbling up.
Jeremiah just smiled, walked over, and gently pulled her into his arms. “Getting jealous, huh? Don’t think I can’t tell.”
“Alright, let’s not talk about it anymore. That’s all in the past. Let’s go eat.”
Hathaway replied, “I’m not hungry. I just don’t feel like eating.”
Jeremiah teased, “Do I have to get down on my knees and beg you?”
Hathaway remembered she’d just told Killian they had plans, so if she backed out now, it’d look suspicious.
I had to just go with it.
While waiting for the elevator, Hathaway told Jeremiah to go down first, then took a different elevator herself.
Texted Killian: [Did you want to ask Mr. Blackwood something?]
Killian replied: [Yeah, the CloudWhale AI from Blackwood Tech is pretty impressive. I just wanted to ask Mr. Blackwood about it.]
Hathaway breathed a sigh of relief. Glad it wasn’t anything else. [Just send me the questions, and I’ll ask him for you later.]
But once they got to the private room at the restaurant, Hathaway barely managed to ask about work.
Jeremiah just waved it off. “It’s date night. No work talk.”
With work off the table, they just sat there, awkward and silent. The tension in the room was almost suffocating.
Hathaway pulled out her phone, hoping it would ease the awkwardness. As soon as she unlocked it, a message from Evelyn popped up.
Evelyn: [Check out the latest gossip!]
