“Avery,” Hathaway called out, snapping Avery out of his thoughts. She held up her phone. “Mom and Dad texted me. They’re already there.”

Conrad and Sylvia told her to watch what she said, especially not to mention that she liked Lorenzo in front of Edmund. They didn’t want to upset Edmund.

“We’re almost there, too,” Avery replied.

Avery had taken a couple of wrong turns, so they were a bit late. When they finally arrived at the Blackwood Mansion, the place was already buzzing with activity.

Not only were Avery and Hathaway’s parents’ cars there, but Hathaway also spotted Calvin and Lucas’s cars in the yard.

When Avery and Hathaway walked into the hall, they saw Calvin and Lucas’s parents were there, too.

“Hathaway, Avery, you’re here.” Edmund’s face lit up as he saw the Whitmore siblings walk in. He’d watched Hathaway grow up and had always seen her as his future granddaughter-in-law.

“Hi, Edmund,” Hathaway greeted warmly, feeling a rush of affection after not seeing him for so long.

“Come here, Hathaway. Sit next to me,” Edmund said. “When will you marry Jeremiah? I can hardly wait.”

There were quite a few people in the hall, including Calvin and Lucas’s parents. When they heard Edmund’s words, they all exchanged glances.

They knew about Jessica. Jeremiah had made his relationship with her public ages ago. It seemed like Edmund was the only one still in the dark.

Jeremiah stayed silent, his expression unreadable. He didn’t spare Hathaway a glance.

Calvin and Lucas exchanged a look. Lucas smirked, then shot Hathaway a mocking glance.

Hathaway kept her face perfectly neutral and spoke to Edmund warmly.

Conrad and Sylvia, meanwhile, felt uneasy. They knew about Jessica, but had no clue how far things had gone between her and Jeremiah, and if they were really going to get married.

‘Would Jeremiah actually give up thirty percent of the Blackwood Group’s shares for Jessica?’ they wondered. ‘That can’t be possible.’

“Hathaway, you’re here,” Lorenzo called out as he came running down the stairs. Remembering he was supposed to be Hathaway’s boyfriend, he quickly took his place by her side.

Hathaway gave him a small smile. “Hi.”

Mia had spent the night at Edmund’s place. She stood by the stairs, rolling her eyes at the whole scene.

Once everyone had arrived, Eleanor came out beaming, calling everyone to take their seats.

Edmund stood up, and Hathaway helped him over to the head of the table.

As soon as he sat down, he said, “Jeremiah, Hathaway doesn’t visit often. Be a good host and take care of her.”

Jeremiah didn’t say a word.

The Harper couple and the Reed couple exchanged a knowing look and stayed silent, not wanting to get involved. They weren’t about to take sides.

Edmund assumed Jeremiah agreed since he stayed quiet.

During dinner, Olivia Harper started sharing some impressive stories from Jeremiah’s high school days. Back then, he was a straight-A student, but two days before the SATs, he managed to injure his right hand.

He spent one day teaching himself to write with his left hand, and with his right hand in a cast, he aced the exam and ended up as the top scorer in the whole state.

Sophia Reed couldn’t help blurting out, “Jeremiah’s been outstanding since he was little. No wonder Hathaway is so madly in love with him.”

The moment those words left her mouth, the air in the room froze.

Hathaway was about to blurt out in her head, “Lorenzo is my boyfriend now.”

Conrad cleared his throat, and Sylvia kicked Hathaway under the table. So Hathaway clamped her mouth shut.

Sophia realized she’d put her foot in her mouth, so she quickly tried to smooth things over. “Hathaway always seems so easygoing. She will surely be happy.”

Edmund beamed, “Naturally.”

Hathaway couldn’t help but laugh.

‘In my previous life, I lost my parents, my brother, and my unborn nieces and nephews. Is that what they mean by being happy?’ Hathaway thought. ‘And all of that was because of Jeremiah.’

After dinner, Edmund suggested. “Jeremiah, you should keep Hathaway company.”

Hathaway was about to head to Lorenzo’s room with him, so she quickly said, “Edmund, I need to talk to Lorenzo about something.”

Edmund didn’t give it a second thought and smiled, “Alright, go on.”

Lucas frowned, whispering to Jeremiah, “Since when did she start getting close to Lorenzo?”

Jeremiah glanced at Hathaway’s retreating figure before looking away. “She claims they’re dating.”
