Chapter 29
After the dinner, the group left the Reed residence. Hathaway drove Avery’s car.

Avery, a little tipsy, lounged in the passenger seat, the neon lights outside flickering across his sharp features.
He watched Hathaway drive and suddenly blurted out, “Did you time–travel or something? You used to be such a bad driver. I wouldn’t get in the car with you back then.”
Hathaway jumped a little, then laughed, “Hey, people can change, you know.”
Avery said, “By the way, Dad was wondering how you knew those people were embezzling. That’s kind of odd, considering you started at the company.”
He’d never really thought about it before. It wasn’t until Conrad mentioned it that Avery started to think it was odd. There was something about the whole thing that didn’t add up.
And it was only after Conrad brought it up that Avery realized something was off.
‘Hathaway had only started working there, so how did she manage to spot the embezzlement so quickly?‘ Avery couldn’t help but wonder.
Hathaway had no way to explain, so she shrugged and said, “Guess I dreamed it up.”
Avery was silent for a moment, watching Hathaway’s profile as she kept her eyes on the road. “Do I look like an idiot to you?”
“Believe whatever you want,” Hathaway snapped. She knew that as long as she acted pissed, Avery would let it go. Sure enough, Avery didn’t press any further.
Avery couldn’t wrap his head around it. But he wasn’t the kind to overthink things. When he saw Hathaway getting annoyed, he dropped it.
“Celeste heard about what you did and wants to meet you. She thinks you are really something,” Avery said.
Hathaway froze for a second. Her mind flashed back to that snowy day. Celeste, heavily pregnant, her face pale and exhausted, trudged through the snow.
“What’s wrong?” Avery asked, noticing her expression. “It’s dinner with her. Why do you look so serious? Could it be that my fearless little sister is actually afraid of my girlfriend?
“I might need to rethink this. After all, you have been spoiled your whole life. I don’t want anyone in the family you’re scared of, not my future wife.”
Hathaway snapped out of it. “What are you talking about?”
She gripped the steering wheel and shot Avery a look like he was an idiot. “Mama’s boys are bad enough, but guys who worship their sisters? That’s more disgusting.
“Avery, you should really learn from Jeremiah. He only treats his girl right. He doesn’t give a damn about

anyone else, not his parents.”
Avery couldn’t help but laugh and groan at the same time, especially after Hathaway gave him that glare.
For a second, he felt like Hathaway wasn’t his sister, like Celeste was the one she was really related to.
From sending gifts to Celeste before they’d met, to always sticking up for her, Hathaway was clearly on Celeste’s side from the very beginning. Hathaway really seemed to approve of Celeste.
“Anyone who didn’t know better would think Celeste was your real family,” Avery said.
Hathaway laughed and said, “Well, once you two tie the knot, she’ll obviously be family.”
Avery asked, “So, will you meet her?”
Hathaway thought for a second and said, “Let’s invite her over for dinner at our place. Family dinner’s way better. Mom, Dad, and I can all meet her together.”
Avery paused, a little taken aback. ‘Whoa, that’s pretty official,‘ he thought.
Usually, one only brought someone home when one was serious about marrying them. He felt like he and Celeste hadn’t spent enough time together yet. They were nowhere near that stage.
“Let’s see about that later.” Avery brushed it off this time.

Hathaway drove home in silence, lost in her thoughts.
After getting back to her room, she called Lorenzo, and they wished each other good night.
Lorenzo was out with Mia, enjoying the holiday together. Hathaway asked if Mia’s birthday was right around the corner. It was a few days away.
Though Lorenzo had sent Hathaway Mia’s contact, Hathaway hadn’t added her yet.
Hathaway was about to say something else, but Mia was loudly urging Lorenzo to stop chatting and come play truth or dare. So they ended the call quickly.
“What a clueless girl,” Hathaway muttered, tossing her phone onto the bed and sitting up.
Just then, her phone started ringing again. It was Evelyn calling.
Hathaway picked up, and Evelyn’s voice practically shouted through the phone. “Hathaway, guess where Jeremiah disappeared to in the middle of dinner?”
She totally knew.
“He went off to celebrate the holiday with Jessica. The internet’s flooded with their couple pics,” Evelyn added.
Hathaway responded, “Yeah.”

“So, is this like them kind of making it official? So what are you going to do about it?” Evelyn blurted out, “Is Jessica trying to steal your man? That bitch is too much. Let’s go teach her a lesson.”
“No way.” Hathaway felt a chill run down her spine and quickly cut her off. “Jeremiah would totally kill us.”
In her previous life, Hathaway was always stirring up trouble for Jessica. But every time she did, Jeremiah got more protective. In the end, Hathaway died, while Jessica walked away without a scratch.
“So what are we supposed to do now?” Evelyn mumbled.
“Even without her, Jeremiah never cared about me anyway. Forget it,” Hathaway said.
Evelyn was really down after hearing that. She never expected Hathaway to throw in the towel this early. That wasn’t like her at all.
But since Hathaway had already called it quits, Evelyn had no other choice.
Evelyn hung up, feeling pretty down, but she wasn’t ready to let it go. She started sending Hathaway a bunch of photos of Jeremiah and Jessica, desperately hoping to reignite the tiniest spark of fight in her.
But Hathaway replied: [Seriously, stop sending them. My phone’s storage is about to explode.]
Evelyn finally gave up, feeling a little awkward about it.
When those all–too–familiar photos popped up again, Hathaway was hit by a mess of emotions she couldn’t begin to describe.
On the holiday, after dinner, Jeremiah picked up Jessica and took her to Bayridge’s famous ancient castle. He lit up the whole city with fireworks for her, and someone snapped photos that went viral online.
In one of the shots, they stood side by side, Jeremiah turning his head to look at Jessica with a doting gaze.
