Jessica, you should come here more often with Jeremiah. Make yourself at home,Vivian said warmly.

I will, Mrs. Sutton,Jessica replied. She was dressed in a light purple dress today, which made her elegant temperament stand out more.

That’s wonderful,Vivian said, which was rare for her to praise someone. She turned to Jeremiah. Girls as outstanding as Jessica are few and far between. Jeremiah, you should treat her well.

As for Edmund, I’ll talk to him more.

Jeremiah nodded slightly. Thanks, Aunt Vivian.

His words left Vivian and Mia with all sorts of complicated feelings.

Jeremiah had never asked her for anything before, which proved how serious he was about Jessica.

Darius laughed, Jeremiah, looks like the tables have turned on you.

Hathaway hid in the shadows, thinking, Is it necessary for Jeremiah to ask Vivian to talk to Edmund?

Conrad is already starting to waver, and he’ll probably agree any day now. The Whitmore family will be the ones to call off the engagement.

Jeremiah is being unnecessarily here. Maybe he can’t wait at all.

As Hathaway was lost in thought, the iron gate opened, and Jeremiah’s black luxury car slowly pulled out. She ducked deeper behind the bushes.

She didn’t come out until Jeremiah’s car was completely gone.

Hathaway didn’t see Mia anywhere, so she figured Mia wasn’t home. If Mia were around, especially with Jessica, her idol, visiting, there was no way she’d miss the chance to come out and see her off.

With that thought, Hathaway decided not to bother going inside. She walked over to her car, opened the door, and was about to get in.

To Hathaway’s surprise, Vivian spotted her and hurried outside. Hathaway?

Can’t believe you’d stoop to following and spying on people, trailing Jeremiah all the way here. Where’s your sense of decency? Is this what Conrad taught you?

Don’t go around doing sneaky things like this at your age. You’re making your parents look bad.”

Hathaway had planned to ignore Vivian, but when Vivian started dragging her parents into it, that really got

under her skin.

Edmund’s such a nice guy, but I guess he couldn’t teach you any better.Hathaway shrugged.

Vivian was absolutely livid. As the daughter of Bayridge’s most prestigious family, and later marrying into the equally elite Sutton family, people were always falling over themselves to curry favor with her.

Even Hathaway used to be docile as a kitten around her.

But now, with her marriage to Jeremiah on the verge of collapse, she was letting herself go. Knowing she’d never measure up to Jessica, she threw all caution aside and stopped caring altogether.

Perfect,Hathaway thought to herself. She’s not the only one throwing caution to the wind.

Maybe in the past, Vivian would’ve worried that Jeremiah might actually marry Hathaway. But now, Vivian didn’t have to worry about that anymore.

Seriously? Talking back to your elders like that? Looks like I’ll have to teach you some manners for Conrad’s sake,Vivian snapped, raising her hand to slap Hathaway.

But Hathaway reacted instantly, grabbing Vivian’s wrist before the slap could land.

Hathaway let out a cold laugh and flung Vivian’s hand away. Mrs. Sutton, is this what Edmund taught you?

In her previous life, after she married into the Blackwood family, Vivian had slapped her more than once. Because she got pregnant without using birth control, everyone assumed the baby was illegitimate.

No matter how many times she tried to explain that the child was Jeremiah’s, nobody believed her. Vivian constantly berated her, excluded her, and treated her like she was a disgrace to the family.

After Mia’s accident, Vivian rarely showed her face around Hathaway anymore. But on the rare occasions they did cross paths, Vivian would always find a way to vent her resentment, lashing out at her.

There was a time when Vivian threw a glass of water right in her face and tossed the cup aside in front of everyone, leaving her utterly humiliated.

It’s all because of you that the Blackwood family can’t have any peace. You’re nothing but a jinx,Vivian had spat at her.

This time, Hathaway wasn’t going to put up with Vivian’s crap ever again.

Vivian was forced back a few steps by Hathaway’s strength, her jaw clenched in fury. Seeing she couldn’t get the upper hand physically, she decided to go for the emotional jugular instead.

Vivian sneered, Jeremiah has already decided to give up thirty percent of the Blackwood Group’s shares for Jessica.

Even if Jeremiah walks away from his shares in the Blackwood Group, he’d never walk away from Jessica. No matter what you do, he won’t spare you a glance.

Hathaway didn’t bother to reply. Whatever.”

She was here to see Mia. She didn’t bother explaining herself to Vivian’s snide remarks.

Hathaway smirked, If you’ve got so much time to stick your nose in my life, maybe you should use it

With that, Hathaway slid into the driver’s seat and shut the door. Hathaway had never dared to talk back to the Blackwood family like this before.

Vivian’s face darkened. So you’ve grown a backbone, huh? I heard you got into Whitmore Group, and you haven’t accomplished anything yet, but your attitude’s already through the roof.

No wonder Jeremiah doesn’t like you. You’re simply not good enough for him.

Vivian was fuming. She never thought Hathaway, who used to be so meek and obedient, would dare to talk back to her like this.

As Vivian kept ranting on and on, Hathaway started the car and drove off.

Vivian was about to storm after her to keep shouting, but Darius, who had returned, shot her a frown and called her back inside.

As Hathaway pressed the gas and sped away, for a split second, she almost thought about not bothering with Mia anymore.

Even if I got a second chance, that classmate in the blue dress would still stick to Mia, and Mia would still end up disfigured. Whatever, there’ll be plenty of specialists to help her, so the scars won’t be that obvious,Hathaway thought.

Don’t mess with other people’s fate, mind your own business, she told herself.

Hathaway was driving toward home, but when she reached the next traffic light, she changed her mind and took a different route.

After Mia’s accident, Hathaway had visited her a few times. Mia refused to eat or drink, smashing every mirror in the house. Remembering Mia’s hysterical pain, Hathaway finally let out a weary sigh.

Alright then,Hathaway thought. This will be the last time I help her. From now on, we’re strangers. No more ties.’

Hathaway gave Lorenzo a call.

Once she learned Mia was at Bayridge University, Hathaway asked the security guard to ring their dorm

room.

Hey, a girl is waiting for you at the security office, the guard informed the dorm over the phone.

Mia was convinced Jessica was coming to see her. She knew Jessica had visited the Sutton residence earlier today, so she thought Jessica had come straight to campus for her.

Excited, Mia rushed out, never questioning why Jessica would call the dorm instead of texting her directly.

But when Mia stepped outside and saw it was Hathaway, her face dropped immediately.

Why is it you? You really have the nerve to see me?Mia shot back.

Mia turned to leave, but Hathaway stepped in front of her. We need to talk.”

Mia had her own jab ready. Jeremiah brought Jessica to my house today. Next stop? The Blackwood family. Face it. You’re out of the running for good.”

Hathaway said calmly, I know.

Jessica’s so gentle and sweet, not like you, always running to my aunt and uncle to complain that Jeremiah’s ignoring you,Mia scoffed, rolling her eyes. Begging me won’t help. If you think you can get to him through me, don’t bother.

Like mother, like daughter,Hathaway thought.

If Hathaway had a bit more of a temper, she would’ve turned on her heel and left, not giving a damn whether Mia got disfigured or not.
