Chapter 31 Disfigurement
Mia talked as she walked out, never giving Hathaway another glance.
“Mia, I didn’t see you at your place today,” Jessica said.

“Jessica, I went back to school early. My mom told me you and Jeremiah came over. If I’d known you were coming, I would‘ ve stayed an extra day,” Mia replied.
Jessica and Mia started chatting about everyday things.
Twenty minutes later, Hathaway was leaning against her sports car, glancing at her watch. She couldn’t wait any longer. There were way too many things on her plate. She really didn’t want to have to come back here again.
Hathaway walked over, grabbed Mia’s phone while she was still talking, and hit the hang–up button hard.
She didn’t care about Mia at all. She didn’t want another girl to get thrown in jail.
Vivian showed no mercy to the girl who hurt Mia in her previous life.
“Hey, what are you doing?” Mia let out a surprised squeal as she tried to grab her phone back.
Hathaway instantly held the phone up high, out of reach. She was taller than Mia to begin with, so when she raised her arm, Mia couldn’t reach it at all.
Mia was so anxious she started circling Hathaway, snapping in frustration. “Hathaway, are you nuts? Are you freaking out because Jeremiah doesn’t want you anymore? Seriously, you’re barking up the wrong tree here.”
“Hear me out, and I’ll give your phone back,” Hathaway said.
Mia’s temper flared up instantly. She planted her hands on her hips and yelled at Hathaway, “You’d better actually have something to say.
“If you think I’m going to put in a good word for you with Jeremiah, dream on. Jessica totally outshines you in every possible way, and there’s no way I’d lie for you.”
“Shut up,” Hathaway yelled, totally losing her patience. “I’m only going to say this once. Tomorrow, your face is going to be ruined.
“You won’t be able to take it, and you’ll try to end it all more than once. After that, your life will completely fall apart.” “What are you talking about?” Mia stared at her, totally baffled. “Disfigurement? Suicide? What kind of crazy nonsense is this?”
But the cold look in Hathaway’s eyes showed she was dead serious.
“On your eighteenth birthday, one of your classmates brought you a cake to celebrate. But there was a knife hidden inside. She grabbed your head and forced it down into the cake,” Hathaway said.
Mia’s eighteenth birthday was tomorrow.
Mia blinked in disbelief. “That’s ridiculous.”
Hathaway stared at Mia’s flawless, delicate face. “A cake in icy blue, the whole thing done up like a winter wonderland.
“The knife will slash across your face, blood pouring from the wound, leaving a long, deep scar. From then on, there’s no turning back. You’ll spend your life chasing after surgeries and repairs.
“Consider this me doing you a favor, but don’t breathe a word of it to anyone. If you let one person know, next time trouble comes your way, don’t expect me to warn you.”
With that, she shoved the phone back at Mia and turned to leave.
Mia’s face went pale in an instant. “It really does sound like she’s telling the truth. No way, I don’t buy it.”
Hathaway waved her hand without looking back. “I don’t owe Vivian anything, and I don’t owe you, either. I’m only saying this once. Whether you listen or not, that’s up to you.”
With that, she left without another word.
Mia was fuming behind her, stomping her foot in frustration. “As if I’d ever believe your nonsense. Who do you think you are, some kind of all–knowing goddess?
“Maybe you should worry about your own mess for a change. Let’s see if Jeremiah wants you anymore.”
Hathaway slid into her car and slammed the door, blocking out Mia’s ranting. She started the engine and pulled away without a backward glance.
She’d said what she needed to say. If Mia didn’t believe her, there was nothing more Hathaway could do.

Chapter 31 Disfigurement
Hathaway had way too much on her plate to waste another second on Mia.

Tomorrow was Mia’s birthday.
Mia was all hyped up, heading to a bar with her crew of rich friends and some girls from her major.
She hadn’t given Hathaway’s warning a second thought until she pushed open the door to the fancy private room and spotted the birthday cake sitting on the coffee table.
Mia froze in place.
As long as that cake wasn’t some icy blue winter wonderland, she could blow off everything Hathaway said as total crap. “Mia, come on, sit down,” one of her classmates said, pulling her over to the couch right in front of the cake they’d gone al
out for.
Mia asked, trying to keep her cool, “Who ordered the cake?”
“Kiki did. What’s up? Don’t you like it? Kiki thought you’d really love this,” a classmate said.
Mia forced a laugh, still hoping against hope. “When you guys ordered it, did anyone else see you?”
‘Hathaway was probably lurking in some corner of the bakery or something, Mia thought. ‘Yeah, she’s such a stalker:
She used to follow Jeremiah around everywhere, always showing up wherever he went and pretending it was a coincidence.
“It was the two of us and the girl working at the shop. Kiki picked out the style herself. Come on, Mia, make a wish already. The cake’s going to start melting soon,” one of her classmates urged.
“Come on, let’s all sing the birthday song,” someone called out, turning off the lights. The room was suddenly pitch black.
Kiki pressed up against her, getting closer.
Mia felt a cold shiver run down her spine, and the hairs on the back of her neck instantly stood on end.
Mia was sandwiched between girls on both sides, pinned in place with the birthday cake staring her down from right in
front.
Her so–called friends started singing the birthday song, but to Mia, it echoed in her ears like some kind of curse, a death knell she couldn’t escape.
“Make a wish,” someone urged.
The air suddenly went still, everyone grinning as they waited for the birthday girl to make her wish.
Mia’s teeth started to chatter from fear, and she felt ice cold all over, like she’d been drenched in freezing water. Out of nowhere, her eyes widened in terror, and a piercing scream ripped through the room.
Someone hurriedly switched the lights back on, only to find the birthday cake destroyed. Kiki’s hands were covered in cake and streaked with blood.
Mia, shaking with rage, seized Kiki by the wrist. “What the hell did I ever do to you? Why are you doing this to me?”
The other girls all went pale. “What’s going on? What happened?”
Mia kicked the cake over, and a small, sharp knife suddenly fell out from inside. The whole room was totally freaked out by what happened suddenly.
Mia couldn’t take her eyes off the blade, all the color draining from her face.
“You’ve always looked down on me, always making my life hell, and got my financial aid taken away. Why do you get to have everything while people like me get nothing?” Kiki said.
Before Kiki could get another word out, Mia shoved her away in disgust and bolted out of the room.
By the time Hathaway got home from work, it was almost ten at night.
Sylvia was waiting for her in the living room. “Why are you always coming home so late?”
“I’ve been busy,” Hathaway replied, setting her bag down.
