Chapter 32 Guardian Angel

That noon, Hathaway was busy at work and ended up working late into her lunch break.

By one o’clock, the cafeteria was already out of food.

When Avery found out Hathaway hadn’t eaten yet, he immediately took her to a nearby restaurant.

“Mom says you’ve been working too hard lately, so I’m supposed to make sure you actually eat,” Avery said as they walked

As Avery was talking, they stepped into the restaurant, only to run right into Jessica and the rest of the Kingsley family, who were leaving after their meal.

Avery’s gaze swept over Jessica’s face.

Jessica gave Avery a slight nod.

Her eyes were calm and unreadable; she only acknowledged Avery with a nod, not glancing at Hathaway.

Avery didn’t say a word. He turned around and pulled Hathaway into a private room.

As they stepped outside, Melanie said, “I heard Avery is super protective of his sister.”

“Jessica, he saw you and totally ignored you.”

“Looks like he’s out of your life for good now.”

Jessica tugged at the corner of her mouth, her smile cold and empty. “Honestly, he never was a part of my life.”

“Is that Avery?” Elaine practically swooned, fangirling hard. “I can’t believe he’s actually this hot. It’s so unfair. Why are all the guys around Hathaway so ridiculously good–looking?”

“So what? She lost to Jessica,” Melanie said with a cool shrug.

“True, Elaine said, getting all excited. “On holiday, Jeremiah set off fireworks for Jessica, and it totally blew up online. Half of Bayridge was talking about it. Even though Jeremiah had it taken down fast, you know Hathaway must’ve seen it.

“Hathaway is honestly hilarious, acting like she doesn’t care at all. Jessica told me Jeremiah rejected her confessions so many times, but Hathaway refuses to believe he doesn’t like her.

“Now that Jessica’s back and Jeremiah’s treating her like a queen, Hathaway really should give up already.”

Melanie listened, nodding with a pleased expression.

Soon, their ride pulled up. Preston had recently arranged for a driver for them.

Elaine’s mom, Charlotte, got in the car as well.

Charlotte took the passenger seat and turned around to ask, “Jessica, I heard Vivian and her daughter from the Blackwood family are really fond of you?”

“Yeah,” Jessica replied. “Jeremiah wanted his aunt to give his grandpa a heads–up, so he took me over to her place.”

“I heard Mr. Sutton is from a wealthy family, too,” Charlotte said with a sigh. “Jeremiah really treats you well. He’s so reliable.”

Melanie thought the same, and she patted Jessica’s hand with a satisfied smile. “Reginald and Eleanor will probably fall for Jessica, too, once they meet her.”

“Yeah, once they see Jessica, Hathaway will be ancient history to them,” Elaine added.

That was for sure. Melanie had zero doubts about it. As long as Reginald and Eleanor met Jessica, they’d instantly take a liking to her.

Hathaway was some nobody with a degree. No way she could ever compete with Jessica.

Meanwhile, Avery sat down and ordered a few dishes. “Dad’s thinking about teaming up with the Blackwood family.”

This project was spearheaded by the government, partnering with the top local companies.

Hathaway stayed quiet. She was already familiar with the project. The Blackwood family was raking in tons of money.

If they could work with the Blackwood family, they’d cash in big time, too. But at this point, there wasn’t much Hathaway could do about it.

With the way things stood, as long as Blackwood Group got involved, the government would always choose them. On this project, Hathaway was completely out of her depth.

Hathaway said, “I’m worried the Kingsley family might try to mess things up. Avery, you saw it. Because of Jessica, Jeremiah’s gotten really close to Preston lately.”

“Honestly, it’s nothing to worry about,” Avery said, full of confidence. “The Kingsley family is still way too weak. Even if Jeremiah invested heavily in them, they’re nowhere near being a real player.

“For a project this big, if Jeremiah wanted the Kingsley family involved, the government wouldn’t go for it.”

Hathaway nodded. That was true.

Just then, hail started pelting down outside. The valet came in to ask Avery for his car keys so he could re–park the car. “Oh, and I heard Leo’s heading overseas. He’s going to Dilwaina, Avery said.

Hathaway quietly took a sip of her coffee. She’d already seen this coming.

In her previous life, Leo was ambitious about launching a used car business. His parents tried to send him abroad, but he was dead set against it.

Now that the used car project had collapsed and his new girlfriend had broken up with him, he finally made up his mind to go abroad.

“Leo’s never been as sharp as Lucas,” Avery said. “Lucas has always had him wrapped around his finger since they were kids. I hope Leo can finally prove himself out there.”

Hathaway gave a quiet nod. “It’s for the best.”

“Weren’t you two pretty close?” Avery asked, surprised that Hathaway actually wanted Leo to leave.

“That’s why,” Hathaway replied.

The used car fiasco was the start. Later, Leo got scammed. Right before going bankrupt, a well–known company sold him shares under the pretense of a joint venture, but it was really a way to dump their debts on him.

Overnight, all his properties and personal assets were wiped out, and he nearly ended up in jail.

Alistair was furious and completely lost hope in Leo. Because of this, Leo was basically cut off from the Reed family business for good.

After all, nobody wanted the family fortune to be destroyed by a screw–up.

Especially when there was Lucas, the perfect grandson everyone compared Leo to.

For now, though Leo was leaving the country, Alistair hadn’t given up on him yet.

Hathaway thought back to her previous life. Leo had it tough then, too, but when she hit rock bottom and reached out for help, he somehow managed to lend her 15 million dollars.

“I’m planning to see him off,” Hathaway said.

Quite a few people were planning to see Leo off, so he threw a farewell dinner and invited the Whitmore siblings. As expected, Jeremiah was there, too.

These days, Hathaway usually tried to skip their gatherings if she could.

But since this was Leo’s farewell party, and she was pretty close with him, she decided to go.

Avery was out of town on business, so Hathaway drove herself to the gathering.

Before heading over, she swung by the mall and spotted a luxury watch at a designer boutique. With her venture capital firm doing well lately, she picked out the most expensive one they had in stock and had it wrapped up.

When she arrived at one of Bayridge’s most popular restaurants, Hathaway grabbed the gift from the passenger seat. Leo and his friends were regulars here, so Hathaway knew her way around and walked right in.

The private room was lively and loud, but as soon as Hathaway walked in, she immediately spotted Jeremiah and Jessica standing together by the floor–to–ceiling window, their silhouettes overlapping in the glass.

Her arrival was like someone had hit pause on the party. Suddenly, everything went silent.

“What’s she doing here?” Lucas’s girlfriend blurted out, not bothering to hide her annoyance. She hadn’t seen Hathaway in forever.
