Chapter 33 Still Not Reconciled
V10 Vict
Jeremiah actually picked out dishes for Jessica himself. They’d never seen Jeremiah wait on a woman like this.
Even in the Blackwood family, only one elder had ever had Jeremiah pick food for them, and that was when he was sick, and the servants were all tied up.
Lucas couldn’t help but comment, “Jeremiah, I never pegged you for such a lover boy.”
Calvin gave a silent smile.
Just then, Lucas noticed that Hathaway’s expression darkened.
Truth was, seeing Jeremiah act like this made Hathaway think back to her previous life, how Jeremiah, the hopeless romantic, had done so much for Jessica, swallowing up the entire Whitmore Group to hand it over to her.
But everyone else figured Hathaway was jealous.
Right now, there was nothing she could do. No matter how jealous she felt, she couldn’t let it show. Otherwise, she’d be making herself look bad.
After all, it was not like Jeremiah would care one bit. So Hathaway’s face was tight as she clutched her glass, her mood written all over her. Holding back for now was definitely the right call.
Lucas thought Hathaway had gotten smarter. She wasn’t losing her cool like she used to. But she had to be boiling inside, judging by that stormy expression.
So, really, she wasn’t as indifferent as she let on. She’d gotten more skilled at masking it.
Just then, someone brought up Mia’s situation and asked how things were going. A cold glint flashed across Jeremiah’s face as he replied in a low voice, “She’s already at the police station. The school stepped in and had that girl expelled.” Jessica remarked with a sigh, “Good thing Mia was so quick–witted. Otherwise, who knows how bad it could’ve gotten.”
After she finished, Jessica gave Hathaway a look.
Jessica was certain Hathaway hadn’t heard a word about any of this. She was totally out of the loop now.
Sure enough, while everyone else was sighing over how Mia managed to escape disaster, Hathaway quietly ate her food, as if she couldn’t care less.
Jessica let out a quiet, mocking laugh in her head. Once Leo left the country, Hathaway would have fewer chances to see Jeremiah or Calvin. No one would bother inviting her into their circle anymore.
Hathaway wouldn’t have to keep pretending she didn’t care.
Jessica felt tired watching Hathaway keep up that act. As for that, Jessica was more than happy to see it happen. Hathaway had truly stopped caring about Mia. After all, whatever happened to Mia was none of her business anymore. Just then, Hathaway’s phone buzzed. She opened WhatsApp and saw a message from Lorenzo.
Lorenzo: [Hathaway, can you please add Mia? She’s driving me crazy. First, you tried to add her, and she refused. Now, she’s saying you won’t accept her request. Am I a piece in your drama or what?]
Lorenzo was clearly exasperated. He sent a photo of Mia begging and pleading in his lab, refusing to leave him alone. Hathaway frowned, remembering how Lorenzo had always been there for her, and she didn’t want to put him in a tough spot. So, she reluctantly accepted Mia’s friend request.
As soon as Hathaway accepted, Mia started flooding her inbox with messages, all hyped up like she was on a sugar rush.
Hathaway didn’t bother reading a single word.
She replied bluntly: [Stop bothering Lorenzo.]
Mia: [Roger that.]
Hathaway: [I’m busy right now.]
Mia immediately got the hint: [Okay, Hathaway, let’s chat next time, but please don’t delete me.)
Hathaway set her phone down and shook her head.
When she finally looked up, she realized the whole table had gone quiet. Everyone was staring at her. Leo had stepped out to take a call, so his seat was empty.
“Hathaway, were you paying attention?” Rosanne Fairchild, Lucas’s girlfriend, asked.
“Huh?” Hathaway looked up, a bit lost.

She must’ve missed something important. She’d totally spaced out and was on the fringes of the group. “What’s going on?” Rosanne snapped, “Seriously, you look totally out of it. Jessica’s with Mr. Blackwood now, and since you’ve made it clear you’re not into him anymore, why can’t you make up with Jessica?
“Weren’t you two best friends before? Why are you still acting like she doesn’t exist?”
Hathaway glanced around the table, surprised. She hadn’t expected everyone else to agree with Rosanne. They all seemed to think she had a point.
Jeremiah, though, sat there with a blank look, like he couldn’t care less whether they made up or not.
Jessica said softly, “Rosanne, I’m not forcing anything. Don’t put Hathaway on the spot.”
Rosanne shot back, “Jessica, you’re way too soft. Hathaway, unless you admit you still have feelings for Mr. Blackwood, why are you still giving Jessica the cold shoulder and acting like she’s invisible?”
Hathaway almost let out a laugh.
People who had been around the block knew how to keep things civil on the outside, but inside, they had already said their goodbyes to certain people.
Most friendships end quietly, without any drama. It was not something you announce to the world.
Honestly, Jessica thought the same thing, which was why she cut Rosanne off before the topic could go any further.
“Who I hang out with is my choice, right?” Hathaway finally spoke up. But right after she spoke up, her phone rang.
She saw it was the HR director calling, so she answered right away. “Hathaway, Killian, you mentioned, is here for the job interview.”
Hathaway was stunned.
Back when Whitmore Group’s products were so outdated, they got totally crushed by the competition.
To fix things, Hathaway offered much higher salaries to the tech staff, hoping to attract some of the star engineers from Blackwood Group, the ones she remembered from her previous life. But after all that recruiting, there hadn’t been a single
response.
Until today, when the HR department suddenly sent word.
Hathaway bit down on her lip, trying to keep her excitement in check. She kept her tone neutral as she said, “Can you send me a photo?”
She’d been sifting through stacks of job applications every day, but not a single one was from anyone who’d worked under Jeremiah. Now, HR suddenly claimed one had shown up, but for all she knew, it could be someone with the same name.
While waiting for the photo, Hathaway heard Rosanne say, “Heard you’re working at Whitmore Group these days?”
Hathaway didn’t look up. “How come you’re now hearing about it?”
Rosanne shot back, “Why bother acting like you’re some genius? Stick to your mobile games like before. Your dad only keeps you around as the company mascot, you know.”
“Whether I work or not, and how I do it, really isn’t your concern,” Hathaway replied coolly.
At that moment, Jeremiah frowned.
Hathaway used to care about her image. She’d never get into it with anyone when Jeremiah was around. But now, everything was different.
Hathaway was on edge waiting, but as soon as the HR staff sent over the photo, she recognized him at a glance. It really was Killian Somerset.
Hathaway quickly replied: [Keep him there.]
After sending the message, she grabbed her bag without a second thought.
