Chapter 34 The Party

Hathaway hurried downstairs and left the hotel.

She drove hurriedly to the office, and sure enough, Killian was still in the HR department. The HR manager was making small talk with him, and when he saw Hathaway, he finally breathed a sigh of relief.

“Ms. Whitmore, here’s Mr. Somerset’s resume,” the manager said.

Hathaway took the resume, barely glanced at it, then turned to Killian with a bright smile. “Perfect. You’re the kind of talent Whitmore Group is looking for.”

Killian froze for a moment.

If Whitmore Group didn’t have such a solid reputation, Killian would’ve thought he’d stumbled into some shady company Hathaway seemed totally unreliable.

She hadn’t asked him a single question, and he hadn’t shown her anything on his computer, yet she was already calling him a talent.

“Did you bring all your things? We can set you up with a dorm if you need it,” Hathaway said.

Hathaway was well aware of how talented Killian was. That was why she didn’t bother with an interview. The main thing was to keep him on board.

“I can have my friend ship my stuff over. But if I’m joining, what’s the salary situation?” Killian asked, his main concern clearly being the pay.

Hathaway pulled out the contract. “I’m sure you’ll be satisfied with the offer. Take a look, and if you’re good with it, we can sign right now.”

Killian looked at the salary on the contract and was shocked.

“What, not satisfied?” Hathaway asked.

Hathaway watched as Killian stared at the contract for a while.

“No problem,” Killian said, giving the contract a quick once–over before taking the pen and signing his name.

Only after he saw Killian’s signature did Hathaway finally let out a breath. The adrenaline finally settled down. “How about I buy you dinner?”

Killian blinked, a bit surprised. “That’s really not necessary.”

He smiled a little sheepishly. “I should go get my things together. I want to start as soon as possible.”

“Alright,” Hathaway replied, her emotions a bit mixed.

In her previous life, Killian was never this agreeable. Maybe it was because he’d been with Jeremiah for so long and had earned his trust, he’d grown proud and aloof. He wouldn’t listen to anyone except Jeremiah.

“Could you have someone take him to the dorm?” Hathaway said to the HR manager.

Then she turned to Killian. “Why don’t you get settled in your dorm? You can officially start work next Monday. Does that work for you?”

“Sure, that’s fine with me,” Killian replied, then headed out.

After Killian left, the HR manager hesitated and asked, “Hathaway, is he really as good as you say?”

Back then, Jeremiah invested a ton of money to bring together the best people in the business, and Killian was the standout among them. He was the driving force behind Blackwood Tech.

This time, Hathaway had gotten ahead of Jeremiah. She said excitedly, “Yeah, he’ll be the face of Whitmore Group.”

Back in her office, Hathaway had the procurement department order a batch of premium ergonomic chairs.

When Monday came, and Killian started his first day, Avery Whitmore swung by to take a look. The engineers in the design department were already teasing the new guy.

“Killian, Hathaway really has your back, huh? You got here, and you already scored a fancy chair. Be honest, did you have some inside connection or what?” one of them joked.

Killian replied, “I don’t know Hathaway.”

He wasn’t much of a talker. After that, he turned on his computer and got to work.

Avery took a quick look and then walked off.

Chapter 34 The Party

Avery went to the secretary’s office to look for Hathaway, but she was nowhere to be found

He called her and learned she’d gone to the airport to drop Leo off. “Join me at a party tonight. And about Killian, forget it We’ll talk when you get back.”

Meanwhile, Hathaway was the only one there to see Leo off at the airport.

“Leo,” Hathaway said, giving him a quick hug before he headed through security. She lowered her voice, sorry for secretly sending him those cheating photos of his girlfriend, “Sorry.”

Leo blinked, not really getting why she was apologizing.

“Stay safe out there, and give it your all,” Hathaway said.

Leo stopped trying to figure it out and replied, “Alright, I’ll be careful. You take care, too.”

“Jeremiah and Lorenzo? Neither of them is right for you. Wait till I’ve made a name for myself overseas and come back Then I’ll help you find the perfect guy. We’re still young, we’ve got all the time in the world,” Leo teased.

Hathaway couldn’t help but smile. She didn’t turn away until Leo was out of sight, heading for his flight.

She hadn’t gone far when she spotted Lucas standing there with that signature roguish grin. Hathaway pretended got to notice him and walked right past.

Lucas called out, “Aren’t you going to ask why I’m here?”

Hathaway still ignored him.

“I once asked Jeremiah how he’d feel if you stopped liking him. He said losing your affection would be like a fish losing a bicycle. Why would he care?” Lucas said.

Jeremiah would never say something like that. That was totally something Lucas would say.

Jeremiah never bothered to mention her, let alone say anything more.

Hathaway walked right past him without a word. She needed to head home and get changed for the party.

“Hathaway.” Lucas caught her by the arm, forcing Hathaway to stop.

She spun around, having had enough. Her eyes flashed with unmistakable panic and disgust. “Lucas, can you stop with this childish stuff?”

“Hathaway, since when did you start hating me this much?” Lucas asked. “Weren’t you always flattering me before? You’d do anything for Jeremiah, even if it meant buttering me up.”

Yeah, she really would have done anything for Jeremiah. That thought honestly disgusted Lucas.

Just then, Lucas’s phone rang. It was his ex–girlfriend calling. “Lucas, is there something wrong with me?”

While Lucas was distracted with the call, Hathaway quickly walked away.

That evening, Hathaway and Avery headed to a party together.

They hadn’t had a chance to greet the hosts before Jeremiah and Lucas arrived. For once, Jeremiah showed up with a date. Jessica was wearing a gown sparkling with artificial diamonds, instantly drawing everyone’s attention.

“Mr. Blackwood’s girlfriend is absolutely stunning. Seriously, they’re the perfect couple.”

“Did you hear? That dress she’s wearing could buy a penthouse at Emerald Lake.”

Everyone knew those penthouses started at 3 million dollars. The whole room was buzzing with gossip.

“Jeremiah really went all out tonight.”

“He really treats his girlfriend like a queen.”

Hathaway stood there, forced to watch yet another round of their lovey–dovey display.

But it didn’t bother her anymore. In her previous life, she’d had to put up with more of this, and it had nearly killed her with jealousy.

This time around, she and Jeremiah were ancient history; nothing about him could stir her heart now.

As soon as Jeremiah and Jessica walked in, the whole crowd practically flocked around them, making them the undeniable stars of the show. Avery didn’t bother to go over and say hello.

Hathaway glanced at Avery, worried he might still be hung up on Jessica. She said, “Avery, Jonathan from the Rivers family is here tonight. Since you’re dating his niece, we really should go say hi, don’t you think?”
