Chapter 4 She Went Abroad

Jeremiah had always been arrogant and cold by nature, so the fact that he’d brought a woman to the party today was already shocking enough.

Hathaway mused, ‘Even if it’s only for Celeste’s sake, I gotta stop Avery from doing something stupid this time.’

Jessica sat close beside Jeremiah, her gaze falling on Hathaway. She had expected Hathaway to blow up and lose control, and maybe even scream that she was the one who had saved Jeremiah that night.

But Jessica had clearly guessed wrong.

Hathaway’s attention stayed on her brother the whole time.

Jessica was a bit surprised. Then she realized she wasn’t the only one in the room watching Hathaway. Lucas suddenly said, “Wow, you and your brother are really close.”

Hathaway lifted her eyes and gave Lucas a cold look before letting go of Avery’s hand.

Avery didn’t stay long. He raised his glass, drained the wine, and then pulled Hathaway to her feet. “Something came up at home. Gotta leave now.”

Lucas looked oddly disappointed. “You’re leaving already?”

Avery nodded. He didn’t even greet Jeremiah. Without looking back, he pulled Hathaway out of the room.

Only when their figures were about to disappear through the doorway did Jeremiah glance toward the door.

After they left, the private room went quiet in an instant.

Everyone was shocked by Hathaway’s reaction.

They thought, ‘She has really just left with Avery like that? Since when is she so easy to deal with?’

Jessica thought that Hathaway might actually be furious, but she knew throwing a fit wouldn’t work. Jeremiah wasn’t the kind of man who would give in just because someone made a scene.

Or maybe she was planning something bigger.

The easiest move would be to ask Jeremiah’s grandfather, Edmund, for help. Edmund was the one dead set on having Hathaway marry Jeremiah. Hathaway had said that Edmund liked her very much and wanted their marriage to happen.

At that thought, Jessica frowned, thinking, ‘Hathaway has probably gone straight to Edmund to complain.’

Jessica wasn’t the only one with that thought.

Lucas seemed to realize the same thing and said, “Jeremiah, I’d turn off my phone right now if I were you.”

Lucas’s cousin, Leo Reed, asked, “You mean Hathaway and Avery went to complain to Jeremiah’s grandfather?”

Lucas nodded. “Definitely.”

Hearing that, Jessica flashed a faint smile.

Jeremiah didn’t say anything. His face showed no emotion, and he didn’t actually turn off his phone. He only raised his glass and took a sip of wine.

By the time the party ended and they walked out of the club, Edmund still hadn’t called.

Jessica felt a little uneasy. She wasn’t afraid of Hathaway complaining. What bothered her was how strange Hathaway’s behavior had been. It felt as if Hathaway had slipped out of her control.

Jeremiah sensed Jessica’s mood and gently squeezed her hand. “It’s fine. I’m here.”

Only then did Jessica smile in relief.

Everyone watched Jeremiah hold Jessica’s hand, his protective meaning obvious.

They thought, ‘Poor Hathaway, this is game over for her. She’s probably crying her eyes out at home right now.’
