The Billionaire Heir Fell for the Wrong Girl (Hathaway Whitmore) novel Chapter 5

Chapter 5 Returning The Ring

Hathaway had just gotten back from a seven-hour flight, and she was worn out. Her parents told her to get some rest.

She went back to her room, took a shower, and before bed, checked her savings. She still had over seven million dollars.

There were still many things on her to-do list, and all of them would need money.

In her last life, she had ended up completely broke. She had scraped around, begged for loans, and still hadn’t been able to borrow a cent. Now, she felt uneasy whenever her savings dropped.

She still needed money in many aspects. Luckily, besides the 150,000 dollars her father gave her as a monthly allowance, she was about to start working at Whitmore Group and earn her own money.

Her company overseas hadn’t made a profit yet, but she believed everything would get better.

The next morning, Hathaway got up and planned to go straight to work.

She had a reason for starting to work right away. There were people in the company who smiled at the Whitmores’ faces while secretly working against them. In her last life, Whitmore Group’s collapse had a lot to do with those people turning on them.

This time, she hadn’t married Jeremiah, and Jeremiah hadn’t gotten close enough to those people to use them against Whitmore Group yet. Still, Hathaway already wanted to find an excuse to fire those fence-sitters.

To her, better safe than sorry.

At the breakfast table, Conrad tried to talk her into waiting. “Christmas is only two months away. Why don’t you start after the holidays?”

But Hathaway couldn’t wait that long. “Dad, I want to get used to the work environment first.”

Since Hathaway wanted to make something of herself, Conrad couldn’t say no.

He smiled and nodded, then made a point of going over a few things she needed to remember once she joined the company. Most of all, she couldn’t use her status as the Whitmore daughter to boss anyone around.

Hathaway went along with it.

“What position do you want, Hath?” asked Conrad.

“I want to be your secretary, Dad.”

“Just a secretary?” Conrad was clearly surprised. His daughter only wanted to be a secretary, and his secretary at that.

He knew most girls now didn’t exactly love working with their fathers, so he asked again, “Not your brother’s secretary, but mine? Your sure?”

Hathaway nodded. “Mm-hm. Yours.”

Avery had just sat down when he heard that. He immediately got jealous. “I need a secretary too, you know.”

Hathaway and Conrad exchanged a smile. Avery already had two assistants. He didn’t need a secretary.

Conrad smiled, “OK, you’ll be my secretary. But let me make one thing clear. I’m not as easygoing as your brother. Starting today, you’ll go to work and come home with him. Let’s see how long you can last.”

Sylvia watched them with a smile. Her eyes swept over Hathaway’s outfit for the day, a simple white suit dress that looked clean and elegant. All at once, pride welled up in her. She sighed, “I wonder if you’ll be okay with the cafeteria food.”

Avery said, “Mom, I’ll be there. You think I’d let Hath go hungry?”

Sylvia nodded and smiled at her son and daughter, completely satisfied.

What she was proudest of in this life wasn’t how big the family company had become, or how much money they had. It was her two children.

Her son was handsome, her daughter was beautiful, and more importantly, both of them had grown up with good values. Neither had turned into a spoiled kid.

After breakfast, Hathaway hugged Sylvia before leaving for the company.

She felt so happy right now. Her family was alive. The people who loved her were still around. Nothing could make her happier than that.

She swore to herself that she would hold on to this happiness forever and never let go.

Hathaway and Avery left first in the same car.

Hathaway sat in the passenger seat. As Avery drove, he said, “While you were gone these past months, Jeremiah and Jessica got together.”

Just as Hathaway had expected, Jeremiah and Jessica had been going out as a couple for the past half year.

Avery added, “But Mom and Dad are acting like they don’t know, and their side hasn’t said anything either.”

By “their side”, he meant the Blackwoods.

He then said, “Jeremiah probably isn’t having an easy time either. His parents must be pretty against it in private.”

Hathaway frowned, thinking, ‘Even if they are against it, that would only last for a while. His parents couldn’t really beat their own son in the long run. Besides, Jeremiah has always been their pride and joy.’

Hathaway said calmly, “I want to break off the engagement and return the ring they gave me.”

In her last life, she hadn’t gone abroad. She had fought with Jessica until everything was a total mess, and Jeremiah had grown sick of her because of it. Worse, it had pushed Jeremiah into deciding to destroy Whitmore Group.

In this life, she wouldn’t stand between Jeremiah and Jessica anymore.

As for the night at the motel, she’d only swallow the bitter.

That way, Jeremiah wouldn’t come after Whitmore Group.

“I’m with you,” Avery said. He freed one hand and held Hathaway’s hand. He felt bad for everything Hathaway had given over the years. Now that things had come to this, he only hoped she could move on soon.

*****

They soon arrived at the company.

Hathaway followed Avery into the office area.

A few nearby employees immediately stood up and greeted Avery, Then they saw the beautiful woman behind Avery, and the whole office area went quiet.

Avery smiled and introduced Hathaway. “We’ve got a new face joining us today.”

The employees wondered, ‘Mr. Whitmore personally brought someone? This woman must be someone important.

‘She has such smooth skin. She’s definitely a pampered lady from a wealthy family. More than that, she even looks a little like Mr. Whitmore.’

Hathaway said with a smile, “Hi, everyone. I’m Hathaway Whitmore, the new secretary to the chairman. Glad to work with you.”

Hearing that she was a Whitmore, everyone understood.

Conrad hadn’t hired a new secretary in years. He had always used people who had been with him for a long time. Even if he did hire someone, he wouldn’t pick a fresh college grad with no experience written all over her face.

“Mr. Whitmore, is this your sister?” someone asked.

“Good eye,” Avery said with a grin.

Everyone exchanged a meaningful glance.

As soon as Avery finished speaking, the female employee sitting closest to the entrance smiled and said, “Hello, Ms. Whitmore. I’m Mr. Whitmore’s assistant.”

After that, the others introduced themselves one by one.

Max Lane from the investment department was a middle-aged man with glasses. When Hathaway shook his hand, she paused for a second.

Knowing that Hathaway was the chairman’s daughter, everyone was warm and friendly toward her.

Before Avery left, he patted Hathaway on the shoulder. “Work hard.”

After speaking, he walked off.

Some of the female employees immediately saw Hathaway as their shortcut to getting closer to Avery, so they went out of their way to flatter her.

Hathaway’s office was right next to the chairman’s office. After she got familiar with the place, the first thing she did was ask a female employee to take her to HR so she could look over the recent applicant list.

Later on, Blackwood Group’s engineering team would have a group of real heavy hitters, and four of them stood out the most.

Hathaway wrote down the four names on a piece of paper and said to the HR manager, “If these four people come in for interviews, make sure you keep them with a high salary. If the company won’t approve the pay, I’ll cover it myself.”

The manager froze for a second and nodded. “Got it, Ms. Whitmore.”

The manager’s tone was just as respectful as everyone else’s.

After leaving HR, Hathaway got a call from Eleanor. “Hath, your dad said you’re back home already? Are you free tonight? Come over for dinner tonight, alright?”

Hathaway hesitated for a moment and politely turned her d
