The Billionaire Heir Fell for the Wrong Girl (Hathaway Whitmore) novel Chapter 42

Chapter 42 Sisterinlaw

Dad,Hathaway blurted out, her voice sharp with shock.

She glanced at Avery, but he didn’t flinch. He calmly picked up some food with his fork, like he’d seen this coming.

Hathaway quickly tugged at Avery’s arm, but he patted her hand, meaning for her to calm down.

Suddenly, Hathaway realized Avery and Celeste might not actually get married after all. That thought made her eyes gq wide with disbelief.

Because Whitmore Group’s market value had soared this year, they’d monopolized several energy supplies in Bayridge and become an energy giant that could rival Blackwood Group.

Once the news spread, all the business tycoons started humbling themselves, trying to marry their daughters off to the Whitmore family.

After all, Avery and Celeste were dating. At most, they were testing the waters, nowhere near talking about marriage.

If Whitmore Group were still the same as before, they wouldn’t have considered them.

When one was down, nobody cared. But when one was on top, everyone wanted a piece of them.

To these people, marriage was never about feelings. It was another business deal. It was laughable, but painfully real.

But what the family had no clue about was that Celeste was the only one who genuinely loved Avery. She wasn’t like the other women, always calculating what they could gain.

Hathaway suddenly realized there was something she’d overlooked. Right now, the Rivers family had to be seriously worried.

After Whitmore Group’s meteoric rise over the past year, and with their fourthquarter earnings report released ahead of schedule, the Rivers family had been left far behind. They were no longer in the same league as the Whitmore family.

This quarter, Whitmore Group’s revenue from the new energy sector hit yet another record high, while the Rivers family was rumored to be on a steady decline.

They couldn’t scrape together a fraction of Whitmore Group’s numbers. Hathaway had noticed the Rivers family’s downward trend for three consecutive quarters.

Knowing how introverted Celeste was, Hathaway figured she must be feeling all kinds of anxious and insecure right now. That was why when Hathaway ran into Celeste at the mall, she hadn’t looked happy at all. There was a clear trace of worry between her brows.

Celeste had been dating Avery for over a year, but things hadn’t moved forward at all.

Probably because the Rivers family was pressuring her, and Celeste didn’t really have a say in things with Avery. Was she supposed to be the one to ask Avery, Can we make things official?

Celeste had her pride.

Hathaway?Conrad asked, his voice full of concern. What’s wrong? You look like you’ve got something on your mind.

Hathaway snapped out of it and quickly turned to Avery. Avery, what are you thinking?

Avery didn’t answer. He glanced at Conrad.

Avery was the kind of guy who’d blindly obey his family. If his parents were against a marriage, he’d follow their lead, no matter how much it hurt.

Avery?Hathaway was about to say that Avery was way too blindly obedient to his family, always putting their wishes above everything else and tending to neglect his wife and kids.

Plus, he didn’t have real feelings for Celeste yet. Their whole relationship felt like checking boxes. Men like him only really started acting like responsible husbands after the wedding.

Dad.Hathaway finally turned to Conrad, a little helpless. Celeste’s going to give the Whitmore family a pair of super cute twins, one boy and one girl. They’ll call you Grandpa and Grandma.

Conrad blinked, then chuckled, teasing, You always seem to know everything, huh?

Avery couldn’t help but laugh, too. Honestly, Hathaway’s been like a fortuneteller lately. Who knows, maybe I’ll really end up with twins.

Conrad’s face softened, clearly moved.

Imagining those twins running around, calling him Grandpa. He didn’t care if the families were a perfect match anymore.

Chapter 42 Sisterinlaw

Seeing Conrad’s expression start to soften, Hathaway quickly gave Sylvia’s hand a little shake, signaling her to help out, but

Sylvia gently patted Hathaway’s hand and said, Avery and Celeste have been together for a year now, and things have been going well.

Wouldn’t it be unfair to her if we made Avery start over with someone else now? Why not bring her home and let us meet her first? After all, it’s Avery who’ll be living with her, not us.

Conrad glanced at his kids and realized Sylvia had a point. Since both Avery and Hathaway think Celeste’s a good match, let’s invite her over and see how things go.

That’s awesome.Hathaway jumped up, her eyes sparkling. Avery, go tell Celeste and see if she’s free this weekend. Avery nodded and immediately went to make the call.

Hathaway quietly followed behind, catching Avery on the balcony, his voice gentle as he talked on the phone. After a short pause, he said, No, really, you don’t have to bring anything. We’ve got everything at home.

My family’s super easy to get along with. Seriously, don’t stress about it. Oh, and my mom wanted me to ask what you like to eat.

The call was over in no time, with Celeste hanging up in a hurry. Even after Avery put his phone down, he could practically feel Celeste’s mix of excitement and nerves through the phone.

Avery stared at his phone for a while, thinking, I really wasn’t a good boyfriend. He’d never really cared about Celeste’s feelings.

No wonder Hathaway sometimes had to give him a talkingto and take her side.

When Avery came back inside, he saw Hathaway grinning from ear to ear. Did Celeste say yes to coming over this weekend?

Yeah,Avery replied.

Hathaway’s eyes sparkled with excitement. Avery, should we tidy up the house a bit more? Maybe you should tidy up your room, too.

My room’s already spotless,Avery replied.

Mary was the one who always kept their rooms spotless, so there really wasn’t anything left to do.

Still, with Celeste coming over on Sunday, both of them ended up heading back to their rooms to tidy up anyway.

While tidying up, Hathaway found an old phone in her drawer that she hadn’t used in ages. She plugged it in and turned it

  1. on.

Her photo album was full of side profile shots of Jeremiah.

There were pictures of him riding a horse, driving, out on a yacht, talking on the phone, and so on.

Every single one was a reminder of her simping days. Hathaway couldn’t bring herself to delete them one by one, so she took a deep breath and factory reset the whole phone.

As she kept organizing, she ended up finding a few books on her shelf, ones she’d borrowed from Jeremiah and never got around to returning.
