Chapter 43 Avery Has A Girlfriend
V 15 Youslyft
Hathaway went to the mall. In her previous life, when Celeste first visited her home, she not only brought gifts for her parents but also gave Hathaway a valuable present.
But Hathaway hadn’t prepared anything at all. She tossed the gift Celeste gave her aside without a second thought. She hadn’t really taken their first meeting seriously.
Now that she had a second chance, Hathaway was determined to do things differently.
This time, Hathaway rushed to the mall. After carefully weighing her choices, she decided to buy the same style Celeste had given her to show they were totally in sync.
After buying the gift, Hathaway left the store in high spirits.
In the bustling mall atrium, Hathaway spotted Calvin right away. He towered above the crowd, his presence impossible to ignore.
Calvin didn’t notice her. He was standing there, checking his phone, exuding an air of calm maturity.
Back in her previous life, when things got messy between her and Jeremiah, it was Calvin who quietly helped her get a loan of 15 million dollars behind the scenes. That silent act of kindness was something she’d never forgotten.
After a moment’s hesitation, Hathaway walked up to him. “Hi, Calvin.”
Calvin looked up, a flicker of surprise in his eyes, then smiled gently. “Hathaway? What a coincidence.”
Even in that brief exchange, Hathaway could tell he was being polite but keeping his distance.
“Are you here to buy a gift?” Calvin asked, glancing at the gift bag in her hand.
“Yeah,” Hathaway said with a smile. “It’s my brother’s girlfriend’s first time coming over tomorrow, so I picked out a gift for her.”
Calvin looked up, surprised. “Avery’s got a girlfriend?”
“Yeah,” Hathaway replied with a smile. “She’s wonderful.”
“I bet she is. Looks like he is getting a girlfriend pretty fast,” Calvin grinned, then paused for a moment, his deep eyes locking onto Hathaway.
“Thanks,” Hathaway said.
With that, Hathaway was about to leave. After all, things between them weren’t exactly at the point where they could sit down and have a cup of coffee together.
As she was about to go, Calvin asked, “I heard Whitmore Group recently brought in a really talented engineer?”
Hathaway stiffened for a moment, then forced a smile. “Yeah, after we let a bunch of people go last time, we’ve been bringing in new people left and right. Always recruiting, you know.”
Whitmore Group had been making impressive progress lately, so it was only natural that people were curious about the projects bringing in profits and the team making it all happen.
“Congratulations,” Calvin said. Fortunately, he didn’t press her any further,
Hathaway looked away with a faint, awkward smile. “Guess I’ll get going. Catch you later.”
“See you,” Calvin replied.
After saying goodbye to Calvin, Hathaway stopped by Whitmore Group. By the time she got home, it was already five o‘ clock.
Sylvia was tapping a pen against her chin, her brow slightly furrowed as she studied the open menu in front of her. “Should we use broccoli or choy sum for the stir–fried veggies?” Sylvia asked, glancing up at the maid nearby. “Broccoli is crisp and tender, but a lot of people find it a bit bitter. I wonder if Ms. Rivers would like it.”
Mary was about to answer when she looked up and saw Hathaway walk in.
“Hathaway, perfect timing. Take a look and see what you want to eat tomorrow,” Sylvia said with a smile, handing her the menu. “This is what we’ve got so far. See if there’s anything else you want to add.”
Hathaway looked over the menu thoroughly and said, “Let’s pass on the broccoli. Instead of the fish maw chicken pot, we’ll go with wild mushroom and asparagus chicken soup.”
“Celeste doesn’t like anything fishy or bitter. Let’s go with some classic home–cooked dishes. For dessert, let’s make

mango pudding and chill it ahead of time. She loves that.”
With that, she handed the menu back to Sylvia and headed upstairs with her gift bag.
Sylvia glanced at Mary, puzzled. “Have they met often? How does she know her so well?”
If Sylvia had no idea, Mary was more in the dark.

Sylvia didn’t dwell on it. She assumed Avery must have mentioned it to his sister, and went back to the kitchen to tell the staff what groceries to pick up first thing in the morning.
Once she got to her room, Hathaway sent Joe a voice message. “It’s your day off. Why aren’t you home yet?“/
Joe: [I’ll be back later.]
Hathaway sent over some cash.
Joe: [Huh?]
Hathaway sent another voice message. “Avery’s girlfriend is coming over for lunch tomorrow. Can you grab some cakes? Make sure to get them fresh out of the oven. She loves those.”
Joe replied without hesitation, [No problem.]
Hathaway always sent more than enough, and Joe loved these gigs. Whatever was left over was his runner’s fee.

The next day, Hathaway was out with Conrad, discussing business. As it got close to ten, she kept glancing at her watch and started nudging him.
“Dad, let’s not keep our guest waiting today. We should head back early,” she reminded him.
Conrad checked the time, offered a helpless smile, and turned to Hadrian Lockwood, their business partner.
“Mr. Whitmore, is something going on at home today?” Hadrian asked.
Conrad replied politely, “It’s nothing urgent, but Avery’s girlfriend is coming over for the first time, so my daughter and I want to get home a bit earlier.”
“Oh? Avery’s got a girlfriend now?” Hadrian’s eyes lit up. “No wonder your daughter’s so excited. I was going to ask you out for dinner, but that’ll have to wait. Family comes first.”
Hadrian nodded in understanding, and Conrad smiled as they shook hands and said their goodbyes.
As they walked out of the coffeehouse, Conrad and Hathaway noticed Jeremiah and Jessica.
The two were getting out of a car.
Conrad and Hathaway, eager to get home, acted like they hadn’t seen them and slipped into their own car.
Not long after, Hadrian came out and spotted Jeremiah. He walked right over and shook his hand. “Mr. Blackwood, what a coincidence. Out for coffee with your girlfriend?”
Jeremiah shook his hand back, glancing at the Whitmore family’s car. “Were you here with Mr. Whitmore, too?”
“Yeah, I finished up some business with him. Man, time flies. Now you’ve got a girlfriend, and so does Avery,” Hadrian said with a grin.
