Chapter 47 Nothing Romantic Between Us

Chapter 47 Nothing Romantic Between Us

Edmund arrived at the Blackwood residence from the Blackwood Villa, getting there ahead of everyone else. Hathaway was escorted upstairs by the bodyguards.

Edmund,” Hathaway said, not having time to change into her dress. She faced Edmund’s authoritative gaze with composure.

Edmund thought, She’s so beautiful, but Jeremiah doesn’t appreciate her at all.

He’d watched Hathaway grow up and knew she was genuinely kind. He had hoped to arrange a wedding for her and Jeremiah after she graduated, but another woman suddenly appeared and threw everything off.

He thought, The longer you wait, the more trouble pops up.

Edmund was furious. Why didn’t you tell me Jeremiah’s seeing someone else?

Edmund, things are good between Lorenzo and me,Hathaway replied.

Don’t lie to me,Edmund shot back. He knew full well Hathaway didn’t have any feelings for Lorenzo.

He’d watched her grow up, and she always treated Lorenzo like her kid brother. There was never anything romantic/ between them.

Jeremiah’s the one who let you down,Edmund said.

Vicky

Hathaway swallowed the bitterness in her throat. Edmund, everything that happened before was my choice. It had nothing to do with him. He never promised me anything, and I won’t get hung up on him anymore.

After he fell for Jessica, he was out of my heart.

The atmosphere grew heavy. Edmund’s voice was resolute. Hathaway, let me stand up for you in this.”

Hathaway knew she should have felt warmth, but all that was left inside her was a cold, numbing emptiness.

Just then, the butler walked in. Edmund urged, Where’s Jeremiah? Why isn’t he back yet?

Jeremiah will be here any minute,” the butler said. He’d already gotten the update from the party.

Once Hathaway left, Jeremiah and Jessica followed soon after, and Reginald and Eleanor rushed over as well.

Edmund, I don’t like Jeremiah anymore. If a guy only cares about another woman, there’s no way I’d ever go for him. Even if you made him break up with Jessica, I wouldn’t look back,Hathaway said.

Hathaway wanted to clear things up before Jeremiah arrived. Edmund, I hope you’ll let me go.

As Hathaway stepped out of Edmund’s room, a sleek black luxury car pulled into the front yard, and the door swung open.

Jeremiah strode in and headed straight upstairs, still in his dark suit from the party. When he saw her, his gaze turned cold and sharp.

Lucas came running up right after, his eyes blazing with anger. He grabbed Hathaway’s wrist and demanded, What did you say to Edmund?

What else could I say?Hathaway thought. She let out a cold laugh and shook off Lucas’s hand.

Just then, Edmund heard the commotion outside and barked, Jeremiah, get in here.

Jeremiah didn’t spare Hathaway another glance. He brushed past her and walked straight into Edmund’s room.

Edmund’s voice thundered with fury. Jeremiah, getting bold, aren’t you? Messing around when you’re supposed to be engaged? You’ve disgraced the Blackwood family.

Jeremiah stood in the center of the room, his gaze cool. When did I ever say yes to this engagement?

Edmund snapped, You said you didn’t care before. Doesn’t that mean you agreed?

Jeremiah really had said it didn’t matter to him. But that was before he met Jessica.

After meeting Jessica, he’d already made things clear with Hathaway. And Hathaway seemed to feel the same way. She’d deleted him from WhatsApp.

Seeing Jeremiah stay silent, Edmund exploded, If you say you don’t care, then stick to it for the rest of your life. Or do you want the Blackwood family to be known as a bunch of liars? And what about Hathaway?

I’ll make it up to her,Jeremiah said, a trace of impatience flickering in his eyes.

Edmund’s anger only burned hotter. This marriage was arranged by our families and matchmakers. The Blackwood family and Whitmore family go way back, and her grandfather once saved my life. How can you call off a marriage that’s been

promised for years?

Jeremiah scoffed, clearly unimpressed.

Edmund’s chest heaved with anger, but he forced himself to stay calm. What’s so wrong with Hathaway?

It doesn’t matter how great she is. I don’t see her that way. She’s a friend to me. There’s nothing romantic between us,” Jeremiah said flatly.

Hathaway, blocked by Lucas from leaving, turned back. The door was closed, but Jeremiah’s words cut through, clear as day.

It doesn’t matter. I don’t like her, Jeremiah said. There’s no way I’ll ever have feelings for her. Not in this life.

Dead silence filled the study.

Outside, Hathaway’s face went pale as a sheet. She shoved Lucas’s hand away, glared at the grinning man, and didn’t look back as she rushed off.

As Hathaway reached the bottom of the stairs, Reginald and Eleanor came rushing back. They’d already come to accept Jessica, and now, suddenly facing Hathaway, they didn’t know what to say.

Just then, the sound of a cup shattering on the floor echoed from upstairs.

Reginald and Eleanor exchanged a startled look, then hurried upstairs without hesitation.

Hathaway glanced up toward the second floor. She used to hold onto Edmund as if he were her last hope, always wishing Jeremiah would look her way, if only because of Edmund. But in the end, Edmund also acknowledged Jessica.

On the day Hathaway and Jeremiah were supposed to get married, it poured rain. Jessica chose that very day to go abroad Jeremiah, racing to the airport on his motorcycle, got into an accident and ended up in the hospital.

Hathaway overheard Edmund, with deep regret, say to Jeremiah, I was wrong. I was too stubborn and oldfashioned. I never should have forced you to marry Hathaway.

Compared to his grandson’s life, that old promise meant nothing anymore. Jeremiah had won.

Vivian and Mia walked in, only to find Hathaway standing alone in the hall, lost in thought.

Hathaway,Mia called out sweetly. She already knew about what happened at the charity party. But for a moment, she didnt know whose side to take.

Hathaway snapped out of her daze, didn’t respond, and didn’t look at Mia as she walked straight through the hall.

Hathaway,Mia started to say something else, but Vivian held her back.

When Mia turned around, Hathaway was already gone. Mom, this is all your fault. That’s why she won’t talk to me.

Vivian snapped, Are you stupid or what?

You need to get close to Jessica, not Hathaway. Understand? Jessica’s the one who’s going to marry Jeremiah, not Hathaway. Treat Hathaway like any other acquaintance,Vivian said.

Mia hesitated, her eyes conflicted, wanting to tell her mom how Hathaway had helped her before. If it hadn’t been for Hathaway, her face would’ve been ruined.

But Hathaway had warned her, Don’t breathe a word of this to anyone, or next time something like this happens, I won’t help you.Mia could only keep that secret locked inside.

Vivian assumed Mia understood and gave her a little push. Go see your grandpa and ask him not to be so angry. It’s not worth getting sick because of Hathaway.

Mia remembered how long it had been since she’d seen her grandpa. She stomped her foot in frustration, then ran upstairs, calling out, Grandpa.

The room was a total wreck.
