When Hathaway woke up from her nap, she found a bunch of missed calls on her phone. She couldn’t believe it. Even Jeremiah had tried to call her.

In the end, Conrad and Sylvia brought some gifts to the hospital to visit Edmund, who was already awake. Reginald brought up Jeremiah and Hathaway’s engagement right there in the hospital. Jeremiah was there, too, and he didn’t say a word against it. He pulled the corner of his mouth into a smile that was colder than a blizzard in January.

Conrad was at a loss for words. He muttered a few words of comfort, and after about half an hour, he and Sylvia left together.

After Edmund was hospitalized, Hathaway didn’t rush over right away, and Eleanor was clearly displeased about it.

“I remember she used to treat Jeremiah so well, always did whatever he said. But the moment Jessica appeared, her true colors came out.”

Eleanor was frustrated that Hathaway couldn’t live up to expectations. “If she keeps being this stubborn, it won’t be Jeremiah who ends up liking Jessica. Even you and I might start to prefer Jessica over her.”

Reginald chuckled, “Hathaway really isn’t that bad. She’s a young woman with a bit of a temper. In the end it all comes down to how far Jeremiah’s willing to go for the sake of his marriage.

Early the next morning, Hathaway pulled into the hospital parking lot. Lorenzo was already inside, so she texted him to meet her so they could head in together.

It wasn’t long before Lorenzo showed up. Once they met up, Hathaway and Lorenzo headed to Edmund’s hospital room, hand in hand.

Edmund was sitting up in bed, his eyes fixed on their joined hands. He was silent for a long moment. “Hathaway, are you really sure about this?”

Hathaway nodded.

“Alright then, we’ll arrange your wedding as soon as possible,” Edmund said, testing the waters.

Lorenzo shot a look at Jeremiah as he walked in. “I’m still a student, and besides, there’s a pecking order in the family. Jeremiah’s the eldest. He should get married before I think about it.”

Edmund waved them off, sighed heavily, and sent them out of the room.

Jeremiah’s eyes lingered on their clasped hands, then quietly looked away. He stayed behind, and whatever Edmund said to him after that, Hathaway had no clue.
