A few days later, at noon, Hathaway walked into the café and saw Jessica, Melanie, and Elaine sitting together, chatting and, laughing.

The moment they spotted Hathaway, their voices cut off instantly, and their smiles faded.

Hathaway acted like she didn’t see them, her face expressionless as she walked past their table. Jessica noticed her and called out, Hathaway.

Elaine finally glanced at Hathaway. She wasn’t as wellmannered as Melanie, rolling her eyes at Hathaway.

Melanie took a graceful sip of her coffee, her gaze drifting out the window.

Hathaway didn’t respond. She shot Jessica a quick look, then walked past her and sat down at the table by the window,

She’s so rude.Elaine frowned at Jessica. Why do you talk to her?

Melanie chimed in, Jessica, didn’t you say Jeremiah and his crew are ignoring her now? Why are you still paying attention to her? Haven’t you had enough of her icy attitude?

Jessica sat back down, smiling goodnaturedly.

Meanwhile, Hathaway had already taken a seat by the window. She’d come from the office, dressed in a Dior business suit.

Her outfit was actually pretty similar to what Jessica was wearing to work.

Elaine sized her up and curled her lip. Every time Jessica wears something, she copies it. Lucas said she used to dress like some college kid, never in anything professional. Now she’s copying Jessica’s whole vibe.

Melanie smiled, not bothered at all.

Jeremiah had given Jessica her outfit, and the scarf alone cost over ten grand.

Even if they were both wearing Dior, Jessica’s entire outfit cost a lot more than Hathaway’s.

She’s such a copycat. Jessica wears a Dior suit, and she has to wear one, too,Elaine grumbled, still not letting it go.

Jessica said slowly, I heard Hathaway has a ring that Edmund gave her a long time ago. It’s supposed to be passed down only to the eldest grandson’s wife.

Melanie was startled, whipping her head around to look at Hathaway’s back. Then she should return it.

Exactly. Now that Mr. Blackwood is with you, why is she still shamelessly clinging to a ring that only belongs to the eldest grandson’s wife? Jessica, I’ll go with you and make her give it back,Elaine said.

Jessica put her hand over Elaine’s. I’ll talk to her myself. Leave this to me. Don’t hurt her.

Then she stood up and walked over.

Melanie shook her head and said to Elaine, Jessica is too softhearted, always letting things slide. With her being like this, I doubt Hathaway will give it back.

Hathaway had barely sat down and was about to take a sip of her coffee when Jessica slid into the seat across from her.

Hathaway shot her a sarcastic smirk. What do you want?

Jessica smiled and said, I wanted to ask you something. I heard you have a ring from the Blackwood family. How long do you plan on holding onto it?

Her voice was calm but carried a quiet pressure that couldn’t be ignored, and people nearby started glancing over, sensing the tension.

Hathaway hadn’t expected Jessica to bring this up. She’d already tried to give the ring back to Eleanor, but it was sent right back to her.

She’d meant to have her father return it to Edmund, but both of them were too busy to bother with it. But so, it wasn’t Jessica’s business to push her about it.

What’s it to you?Hathaway shot back.

Jessica could tell Hathaway was still holding onto it, and her voice dripped with sarcasm. You should give things back when you’re supposed to. Otherwise, people will say you weren’t raised right.

Evelyn had walked into the café when she heard Jessica’s words. It was like a needle stabbing right into her heart.

Unable to stand seeing her best friend get bullied, she shouted, What did you say? You think you’re so high and mighty, Mistress?

Ms. Montgomery, please mind your words. Are you speaking up for your friend now? Why doesn’t she say anything herself?

Why are you jumping in for her?Jessica retorted, her sarcasm sharp.

What are you so smug about, Mistress?Evelyn snapped.

Don’t go around insulting people. You have no manners or class,Elaine snapped, getting up with Melanie and walking over.

Elaine, let it go, Jessica said calmly. Evelyn’s sticking up for Hathaway. I know she didn’t mean anything by it.

I meant exactly what I said.Evelyn rushed forward, trying to grab Jessica, but Jessica dodged her easily.

Evelyn nearly lost her balance, and by the time she steadied herself against the table, Jessica was already walking out confidently, Melanie and Elaine right behind her as they left the café.

All around them, people were there for the show. Hathaway helped Evelyn into a chair. You okay?

You weren’t like this before,Evelyn muttered, frustrated at Hathaway’s lack of fight.

She remembered when Hathaway used to be fearless, bold, passionate, and always true to herself. Now/she was so bland. Hathaway frowned. If you say anything against her, I’m worried Jeremiah will target the Montgomery family.

Evelyn asked, Does Jeremiah really care about Jessica that much?

Hathaway nodded. In her previous life, the Whitmore family paid a heavy price for this. And besides, Avery’s about to get married. I really don’t want to cause any more drama.

Evelyn said, Avery’s getting married already? That’s so fast. What’s his future wife like?

She’s a really good person,Hathaway replied, her expression softening as she spoke.

Make sure you save ten invites for me. My whole family’s coming,Evelyn said.

Hathaway smiled, Deal.

After that, they started gossiping about all the latest drama.

After they parted ways, Hathaway got into her car. On her way back, her phone lit up with a call from an unknown number. Without thinking, she picked up while driving, but the voice on the other end nearly made her hit the brakes. Come to Bayridge Hospital.” It was Jeremiah. He hung up without another word.

Hathaway’s gut twisted. She knew something was wrong. She turned the wheel at the next intersection and headed for Bayridge Hospital.

As soon as Hathaway arrived at the hospital, Lucas was the first to rush up to her. How could you be so vicious? I never thought your jealousy would go this far.

Jessica only asked you for the ring, and you went as far as to have someone hit her with a car?

Hathaway was stunned. Wait, she was hit? I swear, I didn’t know anything about it.

In her previous life, Jeremiah had thought Hathaway had sabotaged Jessica’s car brakes, and he’d burst into her room and grabbed her by the throat. But in her memory, Jessica’s accident wasn’t supposed to happen this soon.

Hathaway’s voice was steady. Indeed, I don’t like Jessica, but I never wanted to hurt her.

Lucas didn’t believe a word she said. Go apologize to Jeremiah right now. And swear you’ll never pull something like this again.
