Chapter 52 Beating Up Jeremiah

Hathaway remembered it, too. Back then, Jessica was so proud that she ran off in tears.

At the time, no one noticed that Jeremiah was already interested in Jessica the very first time he met her.

Hathaway lowered her gaze. She’d gone after Jessica to comfort her, not realizing anything was off. Only thinking back on it later did she see the signs.

He ignores people he’s not interested in,Hathaway said. He wouldn’t say something like that to anyone.

So whether Jessica saved him or not, it didn’t matter. It was only because it was Jessica. He wanted it to be Jessica who saved him.

Hathaway.Evelyn’s heart ached for her friend. She hugged Hathaway, unable to say another word. She felt Hathaway deserved better.

Hathaway smiled. She had no idea Jeremiah had been drawn to Jessica from the very beginning. His feelings were always buried so deeply that Hathaway never stood a chance.

She’d suffered a lot in her previous life. She wasn’t going to be that foolish again.

Just then, they heard footsteps approaching and stepped away from each other.

I should get going. Try not to act on impulse again,” Hathaway said.

Yeah,Evelyn replied, finally taking her words to heart. She realized acting impulsively would only hurt the Montgomery family and Hathaway. She hadn’t expected Jeremiah to have such a big reaction.

As Hathaway stood up to leave, Sylvie walked in. Hathaway turned to her and said, Sylvie, I’m really sorry. I didn’t handle things well, and I ended up causing you so much trouble.

I know saying sorry won’t fix anything, but if you ever need anything from the Whitmore family, let me know. I’ll do everything I can.

Hathaway explained herself for long, but Sylvie didn’t seem comforted.

Once Hathaway stepped out, Sylvie turned to Evelyn and said, Times are different now. Don’t go sticking your neck out for your friends because you feel like it.

Do you realize how much the Montgomery family had to give up today to get Jeremiah to cool off? From now on, don’t mess with Jessica.

Evelyn frowned. Mom, why are you saying this now? Hathaway can still hear you.

Hathaway hadn’t gone far at all, and she caught every word. It almost felt like Sylvie wanted her to hear it.

Hathaway thought to herself, That’s human nature. She understood what Sylvie meant.

She didn’t linger and quietly left the Montgomery residence. She knew the Montgomery family didn’t have a choice. In Bayridge, you had to know how to adapt if you wanted to last.

After leaving the Montgomery house, Hathaway felt like someone had ripped her heart right open.

She didn’t head home. Instead, she drove to the river, rolled down the window, and let herself breathe as she stared out at the water. She almost called her dad, but held back.

She couldn’t rely on her father anymore.

If she called him when she was feeling down, he’d hear it in her voice, and it would only make him worry. Hathaway took a deep breath, started the car, and headed for the office.

It was already past six, and everyone else had gone home. Only the R&D department still had its lights on. Hathaway pushed the door open and walked in. To her surprise, Killian was still at his desk, working overtime. Why are you still here?Hathaway asked.

Killian was basically the head of R&D now. When he first joined, Hathaway asked her father to give him a top position. Everyone in the company respected his abilities.

I’m working overtime on my own. I’ll be done soon,Killian said, barely looking up from his computer. He glanced at Hathaway for a second before diving right back into his work, fingers flying over the keyboard.

Hathaway nodded and picked a random desk to sit at, keeping her distance so she wouldn’t bother him.

When Killian finally finished and got up, he didn’t expect Hathaway to still be around. She was quietly browsing througly an algorithm book at the workstation.

Killian glanced at the cover, but before he could say anything, Hathaway set the book aside and got to her feet. All done? Come on, let’s grab dinner. My treat.

Huh?Killian was honestly surprised. He hadn’t eaten yet, but grabbing dinner with Hathaway wasn’t exactly what he’d expected.

Killian hesitated and thought, Isn’t this a bit much?

Before he could say anything, Hathaway jumped in, You’ve been working your tail off for the company. The least I can do is buy you dinner. Besides, I work here, too. Treat me like any other coworker.

Killian considered it for a moment. Yeah, makes sense. Okay.

Half an hour later, Hathaway drove Killian to a popular local restaurant. They ordered a few dishes and chatted over dinner.

Killian was surprised to find Hathaway actually pretty fun to talk to.

After all, Hathaway knew what the future held. She could predict which projects would become hits, which would fade into obscurity, and which apps would get abandoned almost as soon as they went live.

After they finished eating, Killian was actually a little reluctant for the conversation to end. He wished he could keep chatting with Hathaway a bit longer.

As they stepped out, Killian was about to pay, but Hathaway had already settled the bill on her phone before he could reach for his wallet.

Night had already fallen by the time they stepped out of the restaurant. Hathaway glanced up, and there was Jeremiah, walking over with some stranger.

The moment their eyes met, Hathaway’s smile vanished.

Jeremiah’s gaze swept over Killian, then landed on Hathaway, like she was another face in the crowd. Without a word, he walked right past her.

Killian couldn’t help but look back.

Hathaway’s heart skipped a beat. What’s up?

Killian shook his head. He looked kind of familiar.

Hathaway pressed her lips together, not saying a word. Then she offered, Let me drive you home.

Killian didn’t refuse. Alright, let’s go.

Half a month later, Hathaway asked Conrad for an assistant. She ended up getting Avery’s secretary, Aurelia Sinclair, who was known for being meticulous, to work as her assistant.

Hathaway set up a workstation for Aurelia and was going over some tasks when her phone suddenly rang.

Hathaway picked up. Hello?

Hathaway, it’s Calvin, the voice on the other end said.

Hathaway was caught off guard. She hadn’t expected Calvin to call.

Calvin? Why’s he calling me?’ she wondered.

She didn’t have time to think before Calvin’s voice came through. Hathaway, get over here. Jeremiah got beaten up by your

brother.

What?Hathaway blurted out, completely stunned. She couldn’t breathe for a second.
