Chapter 53 Lingering Feelings

“Jeremiah, are you okay?” Hathaway suppressed her impatience and put on a show of concern. Her feet felt glued to the floor; she didn’t move an inch.
Jeremiah looked up at her, a cigarette dangling from his lips, his eyes cold and indifferent.
Not long after it happened, security had already escorted Avery away. Calvin persuaded Jeremiah to let it go, then went with Avery to the hospital.
Seeing Jeremiah stay silent, Hathaway wanted to turn and walk away. But after Avery had hit him, if she left how, Jeremiah would have more reason to retaliate against Whitmore Group.
Right now, Whitmore Group wasn’t strong enough to handle an attack from Blackwood Group.
Even though Jeremiah would eventually make a move against Whitmore Group, the longer they could delay that day, the better their chances of survival.
Thinking of this, Hathaway stopped herself from leaving. She forced herself to sound sincere and said, “I’m sorry for what Avery did. Is your injury alright?”
Jeremiah let out a mocking laugh. Hathaway couldn’t tell what he found so funny.
“Shouldn’t you get that wound looked at?” Hathaway asked. “Maybe you should at least get it bandaged.”
Jeremiah watched her linger a few feet away, saying all the right things but not showing a shred of real concern.
He flicked his cigarette away and, suddenly switching things up, said, “So, why aren’t you coming over?”
Hathaway was caught off guard. She plastered a smile on her face and walked over.
After all this time, it was the first time she actually took the initiative to get close to Jeremiah.
She tried to play it off like she always did, hoping to defuse the tension with her usual easygoing act. But she was a terrible
actress.
Jeremiah stared at her, his eyes cold and expressionless. “If you don’t feel like smiling, then don’t. No one’s making you.”
The atmosphere instantly froze.
With Jeremiah’s gaze fixed on her, Hathaway’s heart nearly skipped a beat. Thankfully, after a few seconds, he didn’t say anything else. He closed his eyes and lowered his head, letting her disinfect his wound.
Hathaway took a deep breath, mustered up her courage, and finally stepped forward.
She opened the first aid kit, picked up a cotton swab, and gently wiped away the dried blood from his wound.
Jeremiah’s face darkened. He had opened his eyes, about to push her hand away, but a faint scent from her hair drifted to his nose, and his hand paused mid–motion.
His eyes lingered on her chest, rising and falling with nervous breaths, and his lips pressed into a thin line. Those bottomless eyes made it impossible to guess what he was thinking.
Even when Jeremiah kept silent, his intimidating presence was overwhelming. Hathaway could feel sweat prickling on her skin under the weight of it.
Hathaway held her breath, her hands moving mechanically, no feeling behind them.
She wished Jeremiah would say something, anything, instead of sitting there and letting her fuss over him.
“Jeremiah.” Just then, hurried footsteps echoed from the doorway, and Jessica burst in.
She showed up at the right moment. Hathaway had never thought Jessica’s voice could sound so sweet. She quickly pulled her hand back and stepped away.
Jeremiah looked up, shifting back to put some distance between them, and glanced at the door. “You’re here?”
Jessica paused for a second when she saw Hathaway standing so close to Jeremiah. But when she noticed the first aid kit in Hathaway’s hand, she relaxed a bit and said, “Let me do it.”
Just then, Lucas showed up with the doctor.
“Jeremiah, the doctor is here. Why are you here?” Lucas said, frowning when he noticed Hathaway. “You’re not needed here. Go look after your brother.”
Now that the doctor was here, Hathaway’s supplies weren’t needed anymore. Hathaway didn’t say anything else. She quietly gathered her things and left.
When Hathaway drove home, Avery still wasn’t back from the hospital, and Sylvia was pacing the living room, clearly

worried.
Only then did Hathaway realize what Lucas had meant. Avery might actually be in worse shape than Jeremiah.

On the phone, Calvin had only said Avery hit Jeremiah, so Hathaway naturally assumed Jeremiah was the one who got hurt, Just then, the butler stepped forward and whispered, “Mrs. Whitmore, it’s Mr. Whitmore on the phone.”
Sylvia hurried over to answer.
Hathaway glanced at her mother, then rushed out; all she wanted was to get to the hospital as soon as possible.
But as she was about to get in her car, Avery’s car pulled up.
When Hathaway saw Avery step out, his face bruised and swollen, looking like he’d been through hell, she covered he mouth in shock.
Calvin really got the story wrong.
This was definitely not Jeremiah getting beaten up by Avery. Avery was the one who got totally wrecked
Nobody ever came out ahead when it came to Jeremiah. Avery’s injuries were ten, maybe a hundred times worse than Jeremiah’s.
Hathaway couldn’t believe she’d been dumb enough to patch up Jeremiah’s wound earlier. She should’ve ripped it open and let it rot, so he’d never recover.
Hathaway’s eyes were teary as she choked out, “Avery.”
Avery gently patted her head, forcing a smile. “I’m fine.”
Sylvia could only sigh as she looked at her son.
Not long after, Conrad showed up, his face cold as ice. He got out of the car, didn’t spare a glance at Avery’s injuries, and as he walked past his kids, he said, “Avery, come here.”
Sylvia hurried over to block him. “Can’t this wait until he’s had a chance to rest?”
But Conrad didn’t listen at all. He dragged Avery straight into the study.
As soon as the door closed, Conrad tore into Avery, scolding him mercilessly for being so impulsive and out of control, at his age.
Swallowing his frustration, Avery spilled everything to Conrad, including how Jeremiah had blamed Hathaway without bothering to find out the truth.
But Conrad was unmoved. His voice was cold and unyielding. “Doesn’t matter what he said or did. The moment you threw the first punch, you already lost. In a couple of days, you’re going to the Blackwood residence to apologize.”
Avery stood there, frozen. Somehow, he was the one who got beaten up, but he had to apologize because he started it. As soon as Avery stepped out of the study, Hathaway, who’d been waiting outside, rushed over and pulled him into her
