Chapter 54
The next day, Hathaway came home from work.

As she walked into the living room, she heard Sylvia asking anxiously, “But hasn’t that business always been ours?”
Conrad saw Hathaway and signaled Sylvia to stop talking.
But Sylvia still said, “Hathaway, can you call Jeremiah? Avery and Jeremiah had a falling out, and he doesn’t want to make the call. Your dad thinks it’s not appropriate for him to call someone younger.
“Can you ask Jeremiah why he gave that project to the Kingsley family?”
Hathaway hesitated for a moment, “Mom, we’re really not that close.”
After her time-traveling, Hathaway had already deleted Jeremiah’s number. There was no way she’d reach out to him now

Sylvia was left speechless. She couldn’t decide whether to praise Hathaway for standing her ground or scold both siblings for causing problems for the family by offending Jeremiah.
Conrad smiled and patted Hathaway on the shoulder, showing his approval. “Go wash up and have dinner. Avery won’t be home tonight.”
“Okay, thanks, Dad,” Hathaway replied.
Hathaway was grateful that her father didn’t force her to do anything she didn’t want to, so she happily washed up and sat down for dinner.

But the next day, Conrad came home with a cold, grim look on his face. Anyone could tell something was seriously wrong.
“What happened? Who made you this angry?” Sylvia asked. She hurried over, reaching for his briefcase, her tone anxious.
“It’s that brat, Jeremiah.” Conrad started, then paused. He glanced upstairs to make sure Hathaway wasn’t around, then continued, “I can see it now. He’s determined to hand all the business to Preston. He won’t leave me a crumb.”
Hathaway lingered in the shadows at the upstairs corner, overhearing everything.
‘As expected,’ she thought. ‘It was always going to end up like this. Sooner or later, Mom and Dad would be disappointed. I don’t feel anything about Jeremiah’s coldness anymore. What really hurts is seeing my parents let down.”
Hathaway turned and headed back to her room. She tuned out the rest of her parents’ conversation.
She dialed Alan’s number in Monarcia. She could hear papers rustling on his end. Alan was reviewing the proposal she’d sent earlier.
Once they finished going over the report and recap, Alan didn’t hold back his praise for Hathaway’s foresight and sharp predictions.
Before hanging up, Hathaway quietly thanked him.
As she put her phone down, an email from overseas popped up in her inbox. It was a set of design sketches from the wedding dress designer abroad.

The wedding gown for her brother’s wedding would be flown in, especially from abroad on a chartered flight.

From communicating with the bride about her preferences to finalizing every detail and coordinating with the designer, Hathaway had been the one quietly taking care of all these arrangements herself.

Avery had been eating out for several days straight. Hathaway hadn’t seen him at home in days, so she was surprised to find him there after work.
He was in the living room, flipping through channels with the remote, looking bored.
Just then, a commercial for the Kingsley family came on TV. Avery frowned. “Since when did the Kingsley family start running commercials?”
Hathaway happened to walk in and reassured him, “They’re using flashy numbers to attract investors. Nothing to worry
about.”
“But with Jeremiah backing the Kingsley Group, what if our partners decide to work with them instead?” Avery said, trailing off.
Hathaway knew exactly what he was getting at. With Jeremiah on their side, the

making a name for themselves. Their partners might end up ditching the Whitmore family for the Kingsley family.
Sylvia overheard their conversation and frowned.
Word spread that the Kingsley family had secured multiple deals with Jeremiah’s support. The Whitmore Group remained unaffected for the time being.
Yet as direct rivals of the Kingsley family, it was only a matter of time before the Whitmore Group suffered losses if Jeremiah continued to back their competitors.
In the end, Jeremiah might turn against Whitmore Group for Jessica’s sake.
Thinking about this, Sylvia worriedly glanced at Hathaway. ‘Should I really let Hathaway decide on her own about calling off the engagement?’ she wondered.

Avery followed Conrad into his study after dark, sounding serious. “Jeremiah is totally crazy about Jessica. Honestly, to make his girlfriend happy, there’s nothing he wouldn’t do.
“You really think Jeremiah will spare Whitmore Group because of my grandfather? I don’t believe it for a second.”
Conrad fell silent, closed the file, and sighed, “We should keep this kind of talk away from the family. If Hathaway hears it, she’ll be upset.”

Just then, the door was gently pushed open. “Dad, I heard everything.
“Seriously, how many times do I have to say this? I don’t care about him anymore. You don’t need to walk on eggshells around me when it comes to Jeremiah. He means nothing to me now. He’s another business rival, that’s all.”
She stepped forward and placed a proposal she’d been working on for a long time in front of Conrad. “Dad, this is a proposal I came up with. Take a look.”
Avery snatched it up first, raising an eyebrow with a skeptical “Well, well.” Clearly, he didn’t believe it at all.
But as he flipped through the proposal, he realized it was well-organized, full of solid details, and it laid out clear steps to solve the problems Whitmore Group was facing right now.

His eyes widened as he glanced at Conrad, genuinely surprised.

Conrad took the proposal and, after reading it, found himself taking Hathaway’s proposal much more seriously now. “Hathaway, you did all this yourself? Avery didn’t help you at all?”
Avery immediately jumped in, “Hey, I didn’t help with any of it. This is literally my first time seeing it.”
Conrad’s face broke into a huge grin, and he couldn’t help but gush, “My girl is so amazing. This proposal is not only professional and thorough, but it also hits all the right notes. Let’s see who dares call my daughter a pretty face now.
‘So who’s been calling me a pretty face?’ Hathaway thought.
“Who’s been running their mouth about me to you, Dad?” Hathaway asked.
“No.” Conrad quickly waved his hand, trying to smooth thing

Her dad must’ve heard plenty of mean-spirited talk, but he kept it to himself so she wouldn’t feel bad.
Hathaway felt a pang of guilt. ‘I’m already grown, but my parents have to deal with all this drama because of me,’ she thought.
