The next morning, at the Blackwood Group’s executive meeting, Jeremiah’s phone rang. It was Edmund calling.
Jeremiah could already guess what his grandfather wanted to say at this moment. He didn’t answer.
He switched his phone to silent and continued the meeting. The employees exchanged uneasy glances. No one dared to say a word or ask a thing.
Jessica, his secretary, sat to his left, taking notes on her laptop, a barely noticeable smile playing at the corners of her mouth.
After the meeting, Jessica strode back to the CEO’s office in her high heels, her steps brisk and efficient.
Jeremiah looked up at her and said, “There’s a big economic forum coming up in a couple of days. Ask Felix if he wants to go.”
Jessica hesitated for a couple of seconds, and then Jeremiah had Victor hand
“Thanks.” Jessica said to Victor.
Victor smiled back, “It’s okay, Ms. Kingsley.”
a few invitations.
Jeremiah’s eyes flashed with a rare, playful glint. “Shouldn’t your thanks be for me in?
Jessica walked over to his side with an easy, natural grace. “How would you like me to thank yo
Victor hurried out, and as the door closed, he caught a glimpse of Jessica sitting down on Jeremiah’s lap. He immediately shut his eyes.
Everyone in the company already treated Jessica like she was the future lady boss.
When Victor got back to the secretarial department, the other female secretaries immediately started gossiping, trying to fish for details about what went down between Jeremiah and Jessica in the office.
Victor either ignored them or, if they kept pushing, would say, “Mr. Blackwood/said if you keep running your mouth, you’ll be sent to HR.”
Since Victor was Jeremiah’s right-hand man, nobody dared ask again after that.

That evening, Jessica came home and told her family she’d be attending the economic forum. The Kingsley family couldn’t be happier to hear it.
Charlotte turned to her daughter, Elaine, and said, “You should go out with Jessica more often. Most wealthy people can only dream of getting into the circles Jessica’s in now.”
Spencer nodded in agreement, “Jessica, give me an invitation, too. I’d love to see what it’s like to rub shoulders with the elite.”
“Of course, Uncle Spencer,” Jessica replied.
Elaine asked, “Can I bring my
besties?”
Elaine wanted her friends to get a taste of the high life, but honestly, she was more interested in showing off that she knew some real big shots.
Charlotte tapped her daughter on the forehead, thinking, ‘My daughter is so naive. Her friends are there to fish for rich
guys.

But out loud, she said, “Jessica might find them noisy, but you’re different. She’s known you since you were little, so she won’t mind you at all.”
The next day was Saturday.
Felix tagged along with Jeremiah and Jessica to the economic forum, and Elaine and Spencer joined them as well.
Once everyone realized Felix was Jeremiah’s girlfriend’s brother, none of the business elites snubbed him. Though it was their first time meeting Felix, they went out of their way to show him respect.
When they got back. Felix was all smiles as he told his family, “We’re really riding Jeremiah’s coattails now. Everywhere we go, people treat us with respect and are super polite.”
“Felix, if you could make us proud like this without relying on Jeremiah, that’d be something,” Elizabeth said, her eyes full of hope for her grandson.
Felix shrugged helplessly. “I could never be as capable as Jeremiah.”
“Well, with Jeremiah backing you up, your life won’t be too bad,” Elizabeth said, sounding wise and calculating.
She knew deep down that as long as Jessica married Jeremiah, the Kingsley family would have everything they ever dreamed of.
Thanks to Jeremiah’s support, Preston was so busy these days that he barely had time to catch his breath.
Jessica had told them that Jeremiah had kicked Whitmore Group out of a major project, and now the Kingsley Group would be taking over. The Kingsley family was about to strike it rich and finally secure their place among Bayridge’s elite.

For days on end, the atmosphere in Whitmore Group’s conference room was thick with gloom.
It was like, now that Whitmore Group suddenly broke things off with Blackwood Group, everyone acted like it was the end of the world for them.
During a closed-door meeting with the execs, someone suggested, “Ms. Whitmore, maybe you should have another talk with Mr. Blackwood. Maybe you can change his mind.”
“Yeah, Ms. Whitmore, I don’t think Ms. Kingsley is as pretty as you. She’s got that ‘charity angel’ label. Who knows if she’s actually that nice or putting on a show?” another one chimed in.
Hathaway flipped a page in her file. “This meeting is for business only. If you can’t stay on topic, you can leave.”
Everyone fell silent.
Avery glanced at his sister. She kept her eyes on the documents, her profile gentle and elegant. It suddenly hit him that Hathaway had finally earned real authority in the company.
Ever since she’d cleared out all the useless freeloaders, the company’s top execs had started to see her in a whole new light. They used to think she was a pampered heiress with no real skills, but now they actually listened to her.
Quite a few people had long been fed up with those slackers who messed around and hogged resources. After Hathaway’s shake-up, the team finally got back on track.
Hathaway looked up from her files and said, “According to reliable sources, Blackwood Group is about to spread rumors that our government deal has fallen through..
“They’re planning to short our stock, and next Wednesday is going to be a critical day.”

Those so-called reliable sources were all thanks to her memories from her previous life.
Hathaway knew all too well that day would go down in history as Black Wednesday.
Computing power, AI, and tech stocks all crashed hard. Even Whitmore Group’s stock hit the daily limit down.
That was the day Whitmore Group’s downfall really started to pick up speed.
“What did you say?” Avery’s reaction was the most dramatic. He nearly jumped out of his seat.

He’d always thought Jeremiah’s sudden decision to cut ties with Whitmore Group was payback for hitting him, but he never realized this was the start of something bigger.
Hathaway raised her hand and wiped away a fleck of spit that had landed on her cheek, her face remaining perfectly calm.
“Ms. Whitmore, is what you’re saying true?” someone asked.
Hathaway replied, “Wait till next Wednesday. You’ll see for yourself.”
In her previous life, she’d been blinded by love, only realizing the truth after Jeremiah cleaned out her family’s fortune. This time, she wasn’t about to let herself be trampled again.
Since Jeremiah was hell-bent on teaching the Whitmore family a lesson, she’d make Blackwood Group pay dearly and knock Jeremiah off his high horse.
Just then, Hathaway’s phone rang. She gathered up the files on her desk, tucked them under her arm, and headed out to take the call.
Before leaving, she glanced at Avery and said, “Hey, if you’ve got anything else to say, keep the meeting going.”
That was all. Avery said, not bothering to add anything else, “Alright, meeting’s over.”
He got up and walked out after her.
As soon as they stepped into the hallway, Avery heard Hathaway’s excited voice on the phone. “The wedding dress has been flown in? That’s awesome. I’m definitely going to make sure Celeste looks absolutely stunning as a bride.”
Hathaway hung up and, spotting Avery, quickly said, “Avery, Celeste’s wedding dress arrived on a private jet.”
“I really don’t have the energy to worry about wedding dresses right now. Are you saying our stock is about to tank?” Avery asked.
