After seeing the high-end apartments with their luxurious interiors, lush greenery, and stunning views, the previous place didn’t measure up anymore.
But Avery couldn’t help but wonder if his father would really agree to spend over 600 million dollars on a house.
When they got home, Hathaway mentioned in passing to Conrad that both she and Avery had their eyes on a place at Skyway House.
Conrad paused mid-bite, glancing at Avery. “That place is way over our budget.”
Avery quickly jumped in, “Honestly, after we get married, we could stay at home. It’s always more fun with a full house, so there’s really no need to buy a new place.”
Hathaway knew Avery was hopeless, so she turned to Conrad. “Dad, it’s not really about whether we have a wedding house or
not.
“What matters is the attitude from our side. Buying a wedding house is a sign of how much Avery values Celeste’s family. Mom, don’t you think so?”
Sylvia had been listening, and when Hathaway brought her in, she smiled and said, “But sweetheart, that place at Skyway House costs a fortune.”
It would cost at least 600 million dollars. They weren’t the Blackwood family, who could drop 600 million dollars without batting an eye.
“Anyway, we’re about to make a fortune, right? Dad, didn’t you say that if my proposal actually gets implemented, Whitmore Group could earn a lot?” Hathaway said.
Conrad couldn’t help but laugh and shake his head. “You remind me of a news story. There was this girl who thought she’d won ten million dollars on a ticket. Before she claimed the prize, she splurged on luxury goods at the mall.
“But when she finally went to cash it in, she realized she’d made a mistake and hadn’t won anything at all. She screamed right there in the mall.”
Hathaway said, “I’m not like her.”
Conrad said, “Is that so?”
Hathaway turned to Avery. “Avery, Jeremiah drops at least 30 million dollars on a gift for Jessica without thinking. If you don’t spend big on your wedding, how will Celeste ever feel special?”
Avery said, “Honestly, we’re not in the same league as the Blackwood family.”
“Dad, don’t bother saving up for my wedding anymore. Put that money towards Avery’s wedding,” Hathaway said.
Besides, she wasn’t planning on getting married, ever.
“Come on,” Conrad said. “Are you sure you wouldn’t mind if I gave it all to your brother?”
Hathaway shook her head. “Nope, I don’t mind.”
Conrad chuckled. With Hathaway so adamant, he finally gave in.
After dinner, Avery got a massive transfer of 600 million dollars from Conrad. He was so excited that he ran over to Hathaway and gave her a big hug.

“Hathaway, you really do love your brother,” Avery said.
Avery never expected his dad would actually be generous enough to let him buy a 600-million-dollar house.
“You deserve it,” Hathaway said, giving him a quick hug. “Make sure you treat Celeste right, and I guarantee the Whitmore family will be swimming in cash.”
In her previous life, the Whitmore family had truly wronged Celeste.
“This time, I swear I’ll make Celeste the happiest woman on earth,’ Hathaway promised herself.
*****
That night, Hathaway had a meeting with the Monarcia team, and specifically briefed them on the infamous Black Wednesday in the A-share market.
She repeatedly emphasized that they had to sell off all those tech and AI stocks at their highest point before Wednesday hit.
And once Whitmore Group’s stock started to fall on Wednesday, the team was to scoop up as many shares as investors sold
off.
Alan asked, “Won’t this mess with Brightlink Capital?”
Hathaway wasn’t sure she could protect Brightlink Capital right now. It meant everything to her, but with the Whitmore wedding coming up, she couldn’t let anything happen to Whitmore Group. The Whitmore family had to come first.
“I don’t care if Brightlink Capital makes it or not. I want Whitmore Group to survive,” Hathaway said.

Sure enough, as soon as the market opened on Wednesday, as Hathaway said, those stocks started to plummet, including Whitmore Group’s.
The drop was so sharp that retail investors started panicking and dumping their shares.
The legal director rushed in. “Mr. Whitmore, our partners are blowing up our phones, and the media’s hounding us.
“They’re asking if Whitmore Group’s got cash flow problems, if that’s why we ended our partnership with the government, and now the stock’s crashing.”
Conrad’s face darkened. “What?”
“Mr. Whitmore, should we issue a clarification statement?” the legal director asked.
But at a time like this, putting out a statement wouldn’t help at all. No one in the market would
pay attention
anyway.
Still, Avery quickly posted an emergency announcement on the company’s official social media.
In the video, dressed in a sharp suit, he reassured investors and the public that the company had no cash flow problems, doing his best to calm the market’s nerves.
Celeste must be worried about him, and she called him. He said a few words and hung up.
As Hathaway had predicted, Jeremiah personally stepped in and went all out, shorting Whitmore Group.
‘But why?’ Hathaway wondered. ‘Why is he still doing this, though I haven’t been clinging to him or begging him to marry me in this life? Is it really because he thinks I caused Jessica’s accident?’
Hathaway’s face went pale, her nails digging hard into her palm. Her heart sank slowly.

Chapter 56
But luckily, now that she had Brightlink Capital, for the next few days, every time Whitmore Group’s stock got dumped, Brightlink Capital would buy it all up.
When the whole market was in the red, Whitmore Group was the only one in the green, standing out like a beacon on the trading screens.
With Whitmore Group’s stock on the rise, people started talking up the quality and reliability of their products.
With this wave of good news backing them up, customer trust and partnership interest shot through the roof. Whitmore Group’s new products launched right on schedule.
Two months later, Whitmore Group ramped up production and solidified its position as the second-biggest player in Bayridge.
Meanwhile, Jeremiah stepped away from his computer and stood by the floto-ceiling window. “Is Conrad still running Whitmore Group?”
“What? You think they switched up their management?” Lucas asked.
Jeremiah stayed silent. That was exactly what he was thinking.
“Conrad’s still in charge, but word is he’s about to pass things over to Avery. So it’s not really a shock,” Lucas said.
Victor asked, “Mr. Blackwood, what made you ask that?”
Jeremiah smirked and went back to his computer. The stock charts for Whitmore Group and Blackwood Tech were almost painful to look at side by side.
And to make matters worse, he’d gotten word that the chip company he’d been eyeing had already been scooped up by Whitmore Group.
He said coldly, “Sitting here at my computer, it feels like some invisible hand is reaching through the screen, trying to wipe
me out.”
Lucas was stunned. “Who? You mean Whitmore Group? Do they really have the guts to come after you?”
Jeremiah didn’t say a word.
Lucas continued, “Should I plant a few more people inside? Strangely enough, everyone from our last dispatched group was laid off shortly afterward.”
“No need,” Jeremiah said, eyes still on the screen. “Maybe I’m being paranoid.”
Maybe it really was a coincidence.
