Chapter 57

Jeremiah, Victor, and their crew were clearly here for dinner too.

Even though Hathaway instinctively stepped in front of Killian, Jeremiah didn’t look at him. He nodded at Avery and said. “Hi, Mr. Whitmore.”

Avery returned the greeting. “Mr. Blackwood, are you here for lunch, too?”

Even though they’d had a fight and were now squaring off in the stock market, it didn’t stop them from keeping up appearances like grown-ups do.

“Yeah. Jeremiah replied.

As Jeremiah was about to leave, he called out to Hathaway, “Ms. Whitmore?”

Hathaway pressed her palm nervously and answered in a calm voice, “Jeremiah.”

She thought Jeremiah might have something to say to her, but after she responded, he simply walked past her and left.

After they left, Hathaway’s back, which had been tense, finally loosened up.

She was visibly relieved.

“What’s wrong?” Killian asked, noticing her odd reaction.

Hathaway shook her head. “It’s nothing.”

Jeremiah didn’t recognize Killian, his once-trusted right-hand man, this time around. Everything was moving in the right direction.

Hathaway breathed a genuine sigh of relief. At least now she really didn’t have to worry. She smiled, finally at ease, “Let’s go.”

When they arrived at the office, Hathaway was about to head to the secretary’s department when Killian called out, “Hold on, let me give you a book. I noticed you were reading something about coding last time, so I thought I’d recommend one to you.”

Hathaway felt genuinely interested when she heard that. She followed him to the R&D department, and Killian grabbed a book and handed it over.

“This is a masterpiece from a coding legend. The book comes with the complete source code and hundreds of practical examples,” Killian said.

Hathaway thought the book looked oddly familiar. She glanced at the author’s name, J&B, and a strange feeling crept up on her.

She suddenly remembered that, after she got married, she once accidentally logged into Jeremiah’s email on the computer, and the welcome message had read: [Hi, J&B]

She flipped through the pages and realized the author’s bio lined up exactly with Jeremiah’s background. ‘So J&B is actually Jeremiah, Hathaway thought, stunned.

“I-I think I’ll pass. I probably wouldn’t understand it anyway,” Hathaway mumbled, handing the book back.

Killian pushed the book back to her. “Go ahead, and take it. The writing’s actually pretty funny. I heard this coding legend wrote it when he was a freshman.”

‘So that’s what he was busy with in college, writing a book,’ Hathaway thought.

Jeremiah never shared his joy with anyone, but with Jessica, he trusted her completely. If Jessica hadn’t shown up. Hathaway would have honestly believed he was a stone, totally devoid of emotion.

Hathaway’s heart was racing, and her mouth felt dry. She was stuck, not sure if she should take the book or leave it behind.

She thought her heart had already settled, but suddenly, those emotions came flooding back, catching her off/guard.

Jeremiah was the unforgettable spark of her youth. She always knew he was destined for greatness. She never imagined he’d use his gifts to bring down the Whitmore family.

Hathaway gave a bitter smile, laughing at her own miserable fate.

She’d already decided to turn it down, but then Killian started talking about the author, looking totally awestruck. “Some people are born to change the world. J&B is one of them.”

Without thinking, Hathaway hugged the book to her chest. She looked up stiffly and asked, “Killian, if you got to follow a genius like J&B, wouldn’t you be absolutely thrilled?”

She realized she’d blocked Killian’s path to working with J&B, all for her own sake.

In her previous life, Killian’s talent had secured him a high position at Blackwood Group.

Killian had a particularly close relationship with Jeremiah. He was Jeremiah’s right-hand man, but also his friend. And because Killian idolized Jeremiah, he extended that admiration to Jessica as well.

For some reason, Killian believed Hathaway and Jeremiah’s marriage was a business deal. He never respected Hathaway, thinking she was the woman forced into it for her family’s sake.

Whenever Jeremiah was sneaking around with Jessica, Killian always helped him keep it under wraps. It was nothing like how things used to be.

Killian said, “Geniuses like J&B are rare. You’re lucky if you ever cross paths with one. Honestly, I feel really fortunate to be working here.

“You and Mr. Whitmore have both taken such good care of me, and joining Whitmore Group is a decision I’ll never regret. Maybe J&B is out there shining in his own field. catching a glimpse of him would be enough for me.”

‘You met him,’ Hathaway thought silently.

Her gaze landed on the book in her arms, and she handed it back to Killian in a hurry, as if it were burning hot. “You keep it. I remembered I already have a copy at home.”

“Alright.” Killian took the book back, not giving it much thought.

Hathaway thanked him, feeling conflicted, and walked away.

The next morning, right at 8 AM, Hathaway had stepped into the office when her phone rang. It was Alan.

Alan practically worshipped her now, convinced she was some legendary business guru, like she could see the future or something.

Hathaway listened to Alan gushing over the phone and smiled to herself.

He had no clue she’d already lived through all this once before. With her habit of reading the news and a memory sharper than most, she’d memorized a few key dates.

Her investment company had only managed to survive thanks to the foresight she gained from her previous life.

After finishing her call with Alan, Hathaway hung up.

An hour later, she was still buried in work.

Aurelia knocked on the door, bursting in with excitement. “Ms. Whitmore, Mr. Blackwood is here, but Mr. Whitmore seems to have stepped out.”

Hathaway knew Avery and his fiancée were out shopping for furniture that afternoon. Their wedding was around the corne and they were busy setting up their new home.

“Did he have an appointment with Avery today?” Hathaway frowned.

Ever since their fight, she knew they hadn’t been in touch.

“The appointment was supposed to be tomorrow, but for some reason, Mr. Blackwood showed up early. Ms. Whitmore, would you like to go meet with him?” Aurelia asked.

Hathaway really didn’t want to see him. “You handle it.”

Aurelia hesitated, about to head out when Hathaway stood up. “Forget it, I’ll go.”

She was curious to find out for herself why he had come.

*****

Hathaway walked over with Aurelia.

On the way from her office to the CEO’s office, she collected herself. By the time she pushed open the door, her face was already set in a professional smile. “Hi, Mr. Blackwood.”

Jeremiah was sitting there, legs crossed, relaxed, but with an air that kept people at a distance. He paused when he heard her

voice.

She used to call him Jeremiah in that sweet, gentle voice, always with a smile. Later, she talked with him coldly. Now, all that was left was the distant Mr. Blackwood.

Jeremiah’s lips twitched ever so slightly.

Victor stood next to Jeremiah, looking a bit surprised as he watched Hathaway. He frowned, unable to help but wonder, ‘Is Hathaway really this indifferent now, or is she faking it?’

She looked like she was here for work. Back in the day, Hathaway practically lived at Blackwood Group. But at some point, she stopped hanging around Jeremiah all the time.

Now, she was so cold toward him that it was like they were total strangers.

Victor shot a glance at Jeremiah, who looked as expressionless as ever. He didn’t seem the least bit bothered.

Victor was convinced that Hathaway’s tactic of backing off to get Jeremiah’s attention was a waste of effort.
