It was Thursday, and when Hathaway’s workday ended, she didn’t head straight home. She had to work overtime today.
She asked Aurelia to order some takeout. After grabbing a quick bite, she got back to work for a few more hours
As the sky grew darker, around eight o’clock, she got a call from Sylvia.
“Hathaway, I’m at a party tonight, but my car broke down. Benson took it to get fixed. Can you come pick me up at this address?” Sylvia said.
“Okay,” Hathaway replied.
Since it was her mom asking, she naturally didn’t want to keep her waiting. She glanced at the address Sylvia had sent her.
She shut down her computer and drove straight to the host’s private villa.

Half an hour later, Hathaway arrived at the host’s villa.
As soon as she walked in, Hathaway spotted Melanie in a shimmering silver gown, wine glass in hand, looking quite poised as she chatted with Sylvia. A few wealthy socialites
Were gathered around them.
Word was, Kingsley Group had landed several projects in a row. Though Jeremiah hadn’t managed to strip Whitmore Group of its power, his support for Kingsley Group hadn’t stopped.
Thanks to Jeremiah, Melanie was now showing off more than ever. Back then, she never would’ve been allowed anywhere near this socialite crowd.
“I heard Hathaway and Jeremiah can’t get along these days. Jeremiah’s been giving her the cold shoulder, hasn’t he?” Melanie turned to Sylvia, her face all phony warmth as if she really cared.
Sylvia looked a little embarrassed. She knew Jeremiah didn’t bother to be polite to Hathaway anymore, and for a moment, she was at a loss for words.
“But Jeremiah treats Jessica like she’s the center of his world. He’s always showering her with flowers and jewelry, and he bought her a sports car worth 15 million dollars,” Melanie boasted, her voice practically glowing with pride.
The socialites around them all gasped.
“Wow, Mr. Blackwood is really generous, huh? He really knows how to treat his woman. I never would’ve guessed. He always seemed so cold and untouchable. Who knew he could be such a romantic when he’s in love?”
“Mrs. Kingsley, you’re really lucky. Not everyone gets to be Mr. Blackwood’s future mother-in-law, you know.”
Melanie was clearly thrilled by all the flattery, her eyes full of smug satisfaction as she basked in the attention.
“Honestly, Jeremiah’s the type who doesn’t fake it. If he doesn’t like you, he won’t pretend. Throwing yourself at him is pointless,” Melanie said.
She didn’t mention any names, but everyone knew exactly who she meant.
“Looks like you’re finally in the spotlight, Mrs. Kingsley.” Hathaway’s voice was clear as she walked over and stood firmly by Sylvia’s side. “Mom, I’m here to pick you up. Let’s go.”
“Hathaway?” Melanie looked a bit flustered for a moment, but before she could say anything, Hathaway had already taken Sylvia away.

Just then, a woman chimed in, “I heard Hathaway’s got some real skills. She’s the one who managed to keep Whitmore Group’s stock price steady, and now they’re getting orders nonstop,”
Melanie shot back coldly, “So what if she’s helping Whitmore Group? She’s going to get married eventually. She can’t stay at Whitmore Group forever.”
Her reminder made the socialites pause and reconsider. After all, Melanie’s daughter was the one set to marry the richest man in Bayridge, the tycoon with billions to his name.
No matter how wealthy the Whitmore Group was, Hathaway would still end up marrying out. She wouldn’t really benefit much from it in the long run.
“Mrs. Kingsley’s got a point,” one of the ladies agreed.
The others jumped in right away, “All Hathaway’s hard work is setting things up for her brother to cash in.”
“Yeah, doesn’t matter how talented she is. She’s never getting a slice of

Hathaway didn’t hear the rest of their conversation. After helping Sylvia into the glance.
car, she pulled away without a second
“Mom, don’t get too close to Melanie,” Hathaway said seriously as she drove. She shot Sylvia a warning look. “She’s not a good person.”
Sylvia responded with a gentle smile and a soft nod. She could tell Melanie had changed. She was acting all high and mighty
now.
It was nothing like the way she used to be when the Kingsley family first moved to Bayridge and came to visit the Whitmore family. Back then, Melanie was all humble and kept to herself.
But Sylvia didn’t take it to heart. After all, it was only natural.
Melanie had been through a lot, and now that she finally had a taste of the good life, she wanted to make up for all those years when no one paid her any attention, and she had to scrape by.

When they got home, Avery still wasn’t back.
Avery had been swamped lately, barely having a moment to breathe with all the wedding stuff coming up.
The weather was getting hotter by the day. Joe was home from school, and when he heard Avery was about to get married, he asked, “Hathaway, how come you’re not helping Avery get his new place ready?”
“That’s their home to set up. As the sister, it’s not really my place to get too involved,” Hathaway replied.
Hathaway knew where to draw the line.
Joe hesitated before asking, “What’s Avery’s fiancée like? Do you think she’ll mind me living with the Whitmore family? Maybe you could talk to her for me? I only come home during school breaks.”
Hathaway was surprised that he was worried about that. “You’ll probably end up liking her more than you like me.”
In her previous life, Joe was always sharp and thoughtful, and after Celeste married Avery, she treated him really well.
When Hathaway was so wrapped up in Jeremiah that she totally ignored her own family’s financial crisis, Joe actually got mad and chewed her out on behalf of Avery and Celeste.
“Such a cheeky kid,” Hathaway teased, flicking Joe on the forehead with her finger.

Joe rubbed his head. “Hey, what do you mean? When have I ever been disrespectful?”
Hathaway changed the subject. “What are you doing tomorrow?”
“I’m hanging out with my friends.”
“Don’t go out tomorrow. Go with our dad to the hospital and make sure he gets a heart ultrasound.”

Almost against her will, Hathaway suddenly remembered how her dad had suffered a heart attack in her previous life.
Even though Whitmore Group was safe, and her dad wouldn’t get so worked up he’d risk his health, she’d only feel at ease once he’d had it checked out.
“Make sure you bring his documents and a water bottle. Have the butler go with you, too,” Hathaway reminded him.
Joe puffed out his chest and promised, “Don’t worry, Hathaway. I’ll keep a close eye on Mr. Whitmore, and I’ll text you as soon as the check-up’s done.”
“Alright, I’m counting on you,” Hathaway said.
But the next day, while Hathaway was at work, Joe called her. “Hathaway, Mr. Whitmore got a call and left right away. Sounds like something’s up at the factory.”
Hathaway went quiet for a couple of seconds. Then she said, “Alright, head home app
now.”
Hathaway hung up and then called the factory. The factory director answered the phone. He said everything was generally fine, but one order would be delayed because the main equipment had broken down. Conrad was leading the team to repair it.
Two hours later, Hathaway called again. The manager said everything was fixed and production was back to normal. But Conrad had been called away by Sylvia.
As Hathaway hung up, Sylvia sent her a voice message. “All the wedding dresses are here. Come pick yours out, honey.” Since she was almost done with her work for the day, Hathaway shut down her computer and told Aurelia she was heading
out.
When Hathaway got home, the place was buzzing with people. A whole row of wedding dress consultants stood waiting for her.
As soon as Hathaway walked in, Sylvia grinned and called out, “Hathaway, what do you think of my outfit? Your dad already picked his.”
Sylvia was wearing a silk dress in deep green, embroidered with subtle patterns, and a pearl hairpin set at an angle in her hair. She looked every bit the picture of elegance and grace.
“You look gorgeous, Mom. That outfit really shows off your elegance,” Hathaway said sincerely. “Where’s Dad?”
“He picked up his suit and left already, so don’t worry about him. Come on, hurry up and pick something for yourself. How about this one? Pink is totally your color, sweetheart,” Sylvia said.
As she spoke, the wedding dress consultant and her two assistants brought out three ready-to-wear dresses. “Ms. Whitmore, we’ve picked out three options based on your figure and skin tone.
