Chapter 60

“Hathaway, what’s wrong?” Avery turned to her, noticing her pale face.

“Avery, I don’t feel well,” Hathaway said. Her heart skipped a beat, and she instinctively took a step back.

She’d completely forgotten about Scarlett, and seeing her now made her jump.

Avery followed her gaze to the front desk, but didn’t notice anything unusual.

“Avery, you go pay the deposit,” Hathaway blurted out, unable to hold it in any longer. “I’ve got a stomachache. I need to use the restroom.”

It was almost an instinctive retreat. As soon as she finished speaking, she spun around and hurried off.

Using the pillars in the lobby for cover, she slipped toward the corner. Once she was hidden in the shadowy corner behind the plants, she finally let out a sigh of relief.

Back at the beachside inn, all Hathaway wanted was for Scarlett to go find Jeremiah and take the credit. She’d totally forgotten she might run into Scarlett again and end up exposing herself.

It had been almost two years since they’d last seen each other, and no

Scarlett was the manager of a luxury hotel.

Hathaway knew Scarlett had real talent. With Jeremiah’s support, she’d be a star everywhere, stepping into the spotlight and becoming famous across the country.

Even Jessica had gotten jealous of Scarlett more than once, not to mention Hathaway in her previous life.

But whether it was Scarlett or Jessica, Jeremiah was always nicer to them than he ever was to Hathaway.

Hathaway reached the corner and took a moment to steady her racing heart. Pressed up against the cold tile wall, she sneaked a look around the corner.

Scarlett was talking to Avery. Reginald had already called the front desk, so when Scarlett saw Avery, she barely reacted.

Avery paid the deposit. While he was checking in, Avery tapped his fingers nervously on the counter and shot a worried look over his shoulder. Scarlett looked over in the same direction.

Hathaway quickly pulled back, hiding herself again.

Back then, she’d told Scarlett to go find Jeremiah so Jessica wouldn’t snatch all the credit. But now, it was like she’d set a trap for herself. She kind of regretted it now.

If she’d known Jessica would still end up taking the credit, she never would’ve dragged Scarlett into it. But it was a single line.

Besides, it had been almost two years. Scarlett saw so many faces at the front desk every day, she probably wouldn’t remember someone she’d only met once, anyway. She probably wouldn’t remember Hathaway at all.

Suddenly, someone smacked her on the back, startling her so much she almost cried out.

Hathaway clapped a hand over her mouth and spun around to find Lucas standing behind her.

“What are you hiding from? Why are you so jumpy?” Lucas asked, giving her a suspicious look, and Jeremiah was standing right behind him.

Jeremiah’s sharp, icy gaze locked onto her, their eyes meeting, cold and unflinching,

Hathaway dropped her hand and quickly looked away. “It’s nothing.”

Lucas clearly wasn’t convinced. He walked a few steps toward the lobby desk and saw Avery chatting with a few staff at the front.

He knew exactly why Avery was here. He was right there when Jeremiah took Reginald’s call.

Seeing nothing out of the ordinary, Lucas came back and teased, “So your brother’s here to book the party, huh? Worried he’s going to stick you with the bill?”

Hathaway really wanted to roll my eyes at him, but she brushed him off, “Yeah, something like that.”

“You’re such a penny-pincher,” Lucas teased.

‘He sure likes to talk. Hathaway thought.

She didn’t want to talk to him, but didn’t dare step out either, so she stayed put.

“Not leaving yet?” Lucas asked.

Hathaway pressed herself against the wall, saying nothing.

Jeremiah stood there, his expression distant, not moving an inch.

“What? Are you trying to become the Blackwood family’s pillar hing

Lucas teased, about to say more.

Just then, Avery came over. He paused for a second when he saw the other two guys, then greeted them, “Hi, Mr. Blackwood, Mr. Reed.”

“Avery,” Lucas said, switching gears, “you’re about to get married. Why don’t you bring your bride out so we can meet her? What? You can’t bear to let us see her?”

Before Avery could say anything, Hathaway jumped in to defend him. “You think you can meet his girlfriend whenever you want? Avery, let’s go.”

Hathaway grabbed Avery’s arm and snuggled up close to him.

Avery immediately stepped in front of her, shielding her as he said goodbye to Jeremiah and Lucas.

Lucas pointed at her. “Hey, this little brat’s got no manners.”

As they walked out, Hathaway made sure Avery walked on the side closest to the front desk, blocking her from view. She didn’t relax until she was outside the hotel.

“By the way, the front desk said Mr. Blackwood arranged a 30% discount for us. That saved us a lot. I didn’t get a chance to thank Jeremiah,” Avery said as he got into the car.

Hathaway reminded him, “He hit you before.”

“Yeah, but I hit him first. That’s all in the past. Reginald and the others let it slide, so I’m already grateful,” Avery replied,

As Avery drove away, he casually remarked, “No wonder it’s the Blackwood Group. Even the front desk girls look like movie

stars.”

Hathaway was taken aback. Avery almost never complimented anyone. He had no idea that Scarlett would actually become a star later on.

With Jeremiah throwing all his top resources behind her, she rocketed to the top and became the ultimate A-lister, the envy of everyone in the business. She was also a thorn in Jessica’s side.

No matter how many opportunities came her way, no matter how bright her star shone, even when Hollywood came calling,

she brushed them off without a second thought.

She never left Blackwood Entertainment, not for a moment. Rumor had it that this movie queen had secretly fallen for Jeremiah. But in the end, nothing changed. The one he chose was still Jessica.

But Hathaway was out of the picture now. Whoever ended up as Mrs. Blackwood, Jessica or Scarlett, it was none of her

concern.

Right now, all Hathaway wanted was to rack up a few more patents.

Her gaze drifted out the car window, watching the trees and traffic blur past. With Avery and Celeste’s wedding around the corner, she couldn’t help but feel a little happy.

But Hathaway never expected that the very next day, Celeste, the bride from the Rivers side, would ask if they could switch the round tables to long ones and host a buffet-style party instead.

Back in her previous life, Celeste never asked for anything at her wedding. She went along with whatever the groom’s family wanted, not mentioning how much the wedding gifts should be.

When Hathaway got the call, she thought, ‘Turns out what Celeste really y wanted in my previous life was a buffet with long

tables.’

Maybe her family didn’t pay enough attention to her at that time, but this time, with a 600 million wedding house and the most luxurious party in Bayridge, this shy bride finally felt pampered enough to ask for something small.

Of course, Avery would say yes to her. But since he was already out of town on business, he could only ask Hathaway to take care of it.

“Hathaway, could you swing by the hotel for me again? I’m about to board my flight for this business trip,” Avery said.

Hathaway hesitated. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to help. But right now, the absolute last person she wanted to see was

Scarlett.

“You don’t want to run into Jeremiah, do you?” Avery chuckled, “Relax. He’s not the type to hang around the hotel all day. With all those companies under him, he’s busier than I am.”

“Go already,” Avery said, then hung up in a hurry.

Celeste only had this one request, so of course, Hathaway couldn’t say no. But thinking about having to see Scarlett made Hathaway want to bail.
