Chapter 62
Two days later, Avery returned.
Hathaway let out a sigh of relief.
She had a lunch date with Evelyn, who had gotten her freedom back and wanted to catch up over a meal.
It was the perfect opportunity for Hathaway to bring her the wedding invitation.

When Hathaway pushed open the restaurant door, she saw Evelyn already seated, having ordered a few dishes and telling the waiter he could go.
As soon as Hathaway spotted Evelyn, she hurried over, pulled out a chair, and sat down. “Looks like you’ve lost some weight”
Evelyn said, “Yeah, I’ve been trying to lose weight.”
“Avery’s getting married next week. Take this invitation home to your family,” Hathaway said, pulling the invitation from her bag and handing it over.
Evelyn’s eyes sparkled as she accepted the invitation. “Avery’s finally getting married. The top guy in our circle is tying the knot. Congrats.”
Hathaway clinked glasses with Evelyn, smiling happily.
Evelyn sighed, “Too bad I’m stuck in a weight loss plateau right now, so I can’t really eat much. I’ve been doing a liquid fast these past couple of days, like coffee, milk, and yogurt.”
Hathaway tried to persuade her, “Come on, you’re out with me. At least eat a little. Careful, you don’t end up with ED.”
“ED? Erectile dysfunction?” Evelyn asked, confused.
Hathaway couldn’t help but laugh, “Where did you get that from? Been watching too many weird ads on TikTok or something? You’re a girl. Why would I say that to you?”
She rolled her eyes. “I mean the eating disorder thing.”
Evelyn cupped her face, her complexion turning a shade.
“Alright, eat a little. Go at your pace,” Hathaway said softly, putting some food on Evelyn’s plate. “Nobody gets fat from one meal. After we finish, I’ll hit the gym with you, and we can work it off together.”
“You’re the best,” Evelyn said, happily picking up her fork.
She thought, ‘Hathaway never used to be this gentle. Sometimes now, she really feels like a big sister to me.
Evelyn never had a real sister, so this kind of feeling was actually pretty nice. The two of them kept sharing food, the vibe warm and easygoing.
At the table next to them, a group of young guys was watching. One of them was about to go over and hit on the girls, but his friend stopped him. “Look at them, either they’re rich heiresses or already have sugar daddies.
“Look at their bags. You could code for a whole year and still not afford one.”
“Yeah, probably already got a sugar daddy,” the guy said sourly, tearing his eyes away from Hathaway, suddenly losing
interest.
“Let’s wait for lan Perez to get back from the restroom and have him pick up the tab right away,” one of them said.

Chapter 62
Hathaway and Evelyn were too busy eating to notice their conversation.
Twenty minutes later, the next table got noisy. It sounded like an argument was breaking out.
Evelyn glanced over.

It looked like a bunch of veteran coworkers were bullying some quiet, introverted guy. She’d seen this kind of thing a million times before.
Hathaway wasn’t one to meddle in other people’s business, so she kept her eyes on her own table and didn’t glance their way
Evelyn, on the other hand, kept shooting concerned looks at the other table, frowning every so often. She really felt bad for that new guy.
Just then, Hathaway heard some guys at the next table start jeering. “Ian, this belt of mine costs more than everything you’re wearing put together.”
When she heard the name called out in that mocking tone, Hathaway froze for a second.
Hathaway whipped her head around, and in the next instant, she shot to her feet. Sure enough, it was the same Ian Perez from her memories.
He hadn’t made it into Blackwood Tech yet. He was another nobody in IT, still startup.

Seeing Hathaway stand up like she was about to play the hero, Evelyn tugged at her sleeve in surprise. “Even if that guy’s kind of cute, you don’t have to go all out because you can’t stand to see a handsome guy get bullied, right?”
But Hathaway acted like she hadn’t heard a thing, striding over with a confident smile. “Excuse me, Mr. Perez, can I get your WhatsApp?”
The guys at the table instantly went dead silent.
Ian looked at her, totally baffled.
“Hey, Ian, looks like a gorgeous girl wants to add you on WhatsApp,” one of his coworkers teased.
But what he was really thinking was, ‘Why does the gorgeous girl want to add him and not me? What does that clueless guy have that I don’t?’
Hathaway continued, “Actually, I heard you’re in IT, and our company happens to be hiring right now.”
Ian nodded politely, took out his phone, and added her on WhatsApp without hesitation.
One of Ian’s coworkers, clearly salty about the whole thing, piped up, “Hold on, gorgeous. This guy’s so basic, and you don’t care? You hire anyone without looking at their style?”
Evelyn, annoyed, immediately stepped up next to Hathaway and shot back, “Yeah? Well, he’s got enough basics to bury you alive.”
The coworker’s face darkened. “What company are you from, anyway? Don’t tell me this is some kind of scam.”
“I’m Hathaway from Whitmore Group,” Hathaway said, reaching out to shake Ian’s hand.
They all heard of Whitmore Group. Other than Blackwood Group, Whitmore Group was the top dog in Bayridge, way better than some no-name startup with no resources or reputation.
“Ian, jobs are hard to come by these days. You really think she’s actually from Whitmore Group?” one of the guys scoffed.

“If you’re interested, we can head over to Whitmore Group for a tour right now,” Hathaway said, totally unfazed.

She didn’t bat an eye, waved the waiter over, and handed him her black card. “Put this on my card for the whole table.”
“Yes, Ms. Whitmore,” the waiter replied, clearly recognizing her. He hurried off to process the payment with utmost respect.
Hathaway turned to Ian. “Mr. Perez, do you want to come with me now?”
Ian thought, ‘Gotta know when to grab a good opportunity.’
He never felt comfortable at that startup. He earned little, had endless work, and was picked on every single day. Now thay something better had come up, of course, he was ready to take a shot.
“Let’s go,” he said.
Hathaway couldn’t believe how lucky she was. Her emotions had been a total rollercoaster these past few days.
As she and Ian were about to head out, Evelyn tugged at her arm, whispering, “Hathaway, did you forget about me? Weren’t we supposed to go to the gym and burn off what we ate?”
