After a good night’s sleep, Hathaway woke up a little after nine and got a call from Avery.
He said, “You came back in the middle of the night on the third day of your business trip?
“We agreed it was supposed to be four days. You rushed back overnight. It’s the middle of the night, and you’re so pretty. What if something happened to you in a sketchy cab?
“Your assistant woke up this morning, couldn’t find you, and was freaking out. I’m really worried about you/taking a flight in the middle of the night.”
‘Avery is seriously turning into such a worrywart,’ Hathaway thought.
“I’m totally fine now,” she reassured him.
“Hey, Jeremiah, I’m heading over to Evelyn’s place. I finished my work early, so I’m taking the day off today,” she said.
Hathaway hung up the phone.
She had breakfast with Sylvia, who must’ve heard from Avery about her late-night return, because her tone was full of reproach. Conrad had left early and didn’t know she was back.
Hathaway patiently reassured her mom for a bit, then drove Evelyn’s car to the gas station.
She topped off Evelyn’s car with gas, but then realized the car was a total mess. Last night, it looked fine in the dark, but in the daylight, she could see how chaotic it really was inside.
Hathaway headed straight to the car wash.
She pulled into the car wash, rolled up the windows, and got out to get it cl
She glanced up casually.
The next second, she froze.
The guy in work clothes and rubber gloves washing cars was actually Ethan, the young man who used to roll up in fancy rides and chase after Jessica.
The arrogance that used to be written all over his face was gone, replaced by a quiet, worn-down look that only life could give.
Ethan saw Hathaway, too. He paused for a moment, then quickly lowered his head, pretending she wasn’t there, and went back to scrubbing the car in silence.
“What are you doing here?” Hathaway blurted out.
Hathaway’s heart skipped a beat. She never expected to run into him here. It’s happening all over again, like her previous
life.
‘I thought I’d already helped him turn things around,’ she thought. ‘Wasn’t his fate supposed to be different now?’
Even after getting a second chance at life, he’s still stuck washing cars.
“Did you go confess to Jessica again?” Hathaway asked.
Ethan shook his head.

“Did he find out you were into Jessica?” she pressed.
Hathaway had so many questions swirling in her mind.
She was almost convinced that it was Jeremiah who had once again destroyed his family’s company.
“It wasn’t Jeremiah,” Ethan said.
Hathaway was stunned. ‘If it wasn’t him, then who else could be this ruthless?’ she wondered.
“It was Lucas,” Ethan said.
Suds slid slowly down the side of the car as Hathaway took a step back. “Stop, don’t wash it anymore,” she said.
Hathaway didn’t care about the mess. She jumped into the car, slammed the door, flicked on the wipers to clear off the suds, and backed out.
This time, Ethan was the one caught off guard. He rushed over and knocked on her window. “You’ve still got suds all over your car! At least let me finish washing it before you go.”
The other guys at the car wash all turned to stare.
She acted like she didn’t hear him at all, practically flooring it as she sped out of the car wash, foam flying everywhere behind her. The car wash guys stood there, dumbfounded, forgetting all about their work.

you?
“Wow, you’re really something. Don’t bother coming in tomorrow. What, you still think your family’s company is running? Still acting like some hotshot rich kid?”
“Sorry, I really don’t know what happened.” Ethan gave a groveling smile, all his old confidence gone. With grease all over him, he looked like a totally different person. “I’ll get back to work right
now.”

Just then, another car rolled in. Ethan lowered his head and quietly got to work on the next one.

On the way, Hathaway gripped the steering wheel, her gaze icy. She called Evelyn. “Hey, do you have Lucas’s number?”
“Yeah, I do,” Evelyn answered. “But what do you want with him?”
“I need to talk to him about something. Hurry up and send it,” Hathaway said.
She hung up, and Evelyn complained about her being all mysterious, but still sent over Lucas’s number.
Hathaway’s anger was icy and painful, burning all the way up her throat. She tried to keep her distaste out of her voice as she called Lucas. “Where are you?”
“What’s up?” Lucas immediately recognized her. “Wow, it’s been ages since you called me.”
Hathaway took a deep breath. “Can we meet? I need to ask you something.”
“Sure,” Lucas said. “Where should we meet?”
“You decide,” Hathaway replied. She was driving, her thoughts all over the place, a strange uneasiness creeping up on her for reasons she couldn’t quite name.

Chapter 78
Twenty minutes later, Hathaway pulled up to Jessica’s restaurant.
She shoved open the door to the private room Lucas had reserved, barging in without hesitation.
Lucas was sprawled out on the sofa, chilling as he snacked on nuts.

This was Jessica’s restaurant, but Hathaway couldn’t care less about that right now. “Did you have anything to do with the Green family’s company going under?”
Lucas tossed aside the nut shells. “Who?”
“The Green family’s company went bankrupt, and now Mr. Green is washing cars for a living. Was it you who pushed him to end up like that?” she pressed.
Lucas had nearly forgotten about someone so insignificant. Only when Hathaway mentioned him did he realize who she was talking about. “You saw him? So, he went running to you to whine?
“What? Are you feeling bad for him now?” he added.
Hathaway’s heart completely sank. “Lucas, his family never had any business dealings with you, did they? Did you really have to back him into a corner like that?”
Lucas leisurely wiped his mouth, his expression indifferent, as if he were talking about something trivial. “Yeah. That’s not my problem. I don’t like him. What’s the big deal?
“Being soft on your rivals is being cruel to yourself. I’ve crushed more companies than I can count. Are you planning to rescue every single one, Ms. Whitmore?”
Lucas leaned in a little, his tone teasing. “You care about him that much? What? y
got a crush on him or something?”
Just then, a waitress brought in the food. She recognized Lucas and could sense the tension in the air, so she thought about

Hathaway hadn’t expected him to order food, especially not all her favorites.
But she wasn’t here for a meal.
Lucas took a seat and said, “Let’s eat.”
“I’m not here to eat.” Hathaway stared him down, her eyes frosty. “Honestly, what you did disgusts me.”
Lucas was momentarily taken aback.
