Hathaway’s phone was blowing up with calls that morning. Leo called to check in, then Edmund, and a bunch of other acquaintances. After fielding a few, she finally got down to work.
Aurelia came in to give her report.
Hathaway gave her a few instructions, but coughed in the middle of speaking.
Aurelia paused and glanced over. Hathaway smiled at her. “You should get ready too. The meeting’s at nine
“Got it,” Aurelia replied.
But Aurelia lingered, eyeing Hathaway’s pale face with worry. “Ms. Whitmore, did you get any sleep last night? You look really out of it.”
“I’m fine,” Hathaway said, brushing it off.
She pulled open her drawer, grabbed a bottle of vitamins, and muttered, “I’ll pop a couple.”
“Let me get you some water,” Aurelia offered, and before Hathaway could say anything, she was already gone. She came back quickly, carrying a glass.
Aurelia set the glass on Hathaway’s desk. “If you need anything, holler.”
“Thanks,” Hathaway replied, watching Aurelia walk out.
She couldn’t help but wonder, ‘After Whitmore Group collapsed in my previous life, where did Aurelia and the others end up? And all those tens of thousands of factory workers-where did they go after losing their jobs?”
She didn’t believe Jeremiah would ever take care of those people. His priorities were always Kingsley Group and Jessica. Why would he give a damn about Whitmore Group’s people?
This time, Hathaway made up her mind-no matter what, she’d keep Whitmore Group alive and thriving.
Even if Dad wasn’t here anymore.
Just thinking about it left a gaping hole in her chest. She closed her dry, aching eyes for a moment, then threw herself back into work.
Not long after, Avery came in, ruffled her hair, and handed her a pill from a blister pack. “Take this. It’ll help with the fever.”
Hathaway swallowed the pill and looked up. “Did Calvin come to pay his respects that day?”
“Yeah,” Avery replied, sounding a bit annoyed. “When your sister-in-law was crying, he offered his condolences to her, but I didn’t bother with me.”
Hathaway hadn’t known about that. That day, she’d been so lost in her own grief, she hadn’t noticed who came or went. She looked up at Avery and asked, “So, shouldn’t you be stepping up too?”
“Why bother? Whitmore Group’s doing fine,” Avery replied.
Hathaway nearly choked. In her previous life, Avery had said the exact same thing right before Whitmore Group went under. She knew she couldn’t count on him.
After Avery left, Hathaway shot an email to J&Be.

giving you a break?]
Just then, her phone started ringing.
She knew the number, though there was no name on the screen.
It was one of Jeremiah’s private lines.
Hathaway didn’t pick up, but she didn’t decline the call either.
She let it ring out until it finally stopped.
She set her phone face down.
55 vouches,
Avery was buried in paperwork, only halfway through the pile, when the plants Hathaway had ordered showed up. She pitched in with the delivery guys, and when she noticed Avery’s jacket carelessly thrown on the couch, she hung it up for him.
Most of the furnishings in her father’s office hadn’t changed at all. Hathaway added a few plants here and there.
After stepping out for a bit, Hathaway came back in as Avery was putting down his phone. “Jeremiah called a minute ago. We talked for a bit, and he mentioned you.”
“Mm,” Hathaway said, not asking for any details-she obviously wasn’t interested.
Avery didn’t press the issue. He told her to get some rest and head home early, saying he’d take care of things at the office.
At six in the evening, while Hathaway was still working overtime, her phone rang.
It was Mrs. Blackwood.
“Hathaway, it’s Mrs. Blackwood,” she said.
Mrs. Blackwood paused, as if searching for the right words, then finally spoke up.
“Your father’s passing was so sudden. None of us really had time to process it. I know you and your dad were very close, so I can only imagine how much this must hurt. I wanted to call and see how you’re doing lately.”
Hathaway replied calmly, “Mrs. Blackwood, I’m doing okay.”
“Hathaway, how’s your mother doing?” Mrs. Blackwood asked.
“My mom” Hathaway hesitated for a moment before answering, “She’s holding up too.”
Mrs. Blackwood could tell she wasn’t being honest and let out a soft sigh. “Hathaway, do you have some free time? I’d love to take
you and your mom out for a meal and some shopping. You don’t have to carry everything on your own.”
“Mrs. Blackwood, I’ve still got work to do,” Hathaway replied. then, the door opened and Aurelia came in with some documents for her to sign. Their conversation was clearly audible through the phone.
Only then did Mrs. Blackwood realize Hathaway really was busy.
She wasn’t saying it.
But it seemed like Conrad’s death hadn’t fazed her at all.
Mrs. Blackwood couldn’t help but think, ‘Hathaway is so heartless.
‘Her father adored her, and now he’s gone-how can she keep working like nothing happened?”

“Hathaway, as long as you’re okay, that’s all that matters. Let’s catch up another time. You go ahead and focus on your work, Mrs. Blackwood said.
She didn’t say anything else and hung up.
Once Mrs. Blackwood hung up, Hathaway put her phone down too.
While Mrs. Blackwood was on the phone, Jeremiah and Reginald were both there, listening in.
After she hung up, Mrs. Blackwood sighed. “Conrad was so good to Hathaway, and now she’s already back at work, barely any time after her father’s funeral. She’s really heartless.”
She shook her head. “Girls always end up siding with outsiders. Good thing you never liked her, Jeremiah.”
After she finished, both Reginald and Mrs. Blackwood turned to look at their eldest son.
Jeremiah lowered his eyes, absentmindedly playing with his lighter, looking like he couldn’t care less about any of it
