This mission — Lola taking the lead — was not only talked about in the Order’s manor or the Bennet family. It was also discussed in different corners of the world, specifically among the families of the Secret Society.
In the wide drawing room of House Monreal, chandeliers cast a warm glow. Shelves of books lined every wall, blending with antique furniture that spoke of generations. Two figures sat opposite each other on gold-plated divans.
"The Bellemonte is surely pathetic," Marceline hummed, swirling the wine in her glass and watching the liquid coat the sides. "How could Henrik Bellemonte agree to Atlas’ plan? Letting the little matriarch oversee the mission? Ha."
"Atlas is a vengeful man, and he has never forgotten what Henrik said all those years ago." A bulky man — the leader of the Talmaru Tribe — chugged whiskey straight from the bottle. "I wouldn’t be surprised if this is his way of getting back at that cocky Bellemonte."
Marceline arched a brow. "Atlas might be vengeful, but I don’t think he’d risk a war with the Bellemonte."
Her remark only made the man snort.
"The Order could erase the Bellemonte from the map if they wanted to."
"If they wanted to," Marceline repeated with a pointed look. "But unlike you, he’s not one to start a war."
Even if the Zorkens and the Bellemonte went to war — and everyone knew the Zorkens would win — the Bellemonte would not fall without a fight. The cost would be steep.
And one thing Marceline had learned from watching Atlas was that he never sacrifices his people so easily. Even so, in this world, everyone was dispensable — even them.
The man only shrugged and drank again. Marceline studied him over the rim of her glass.
"I wonder... whether Atlas is simply confident in his wife or whether he was forced to choose," she muttered, giving him a meaningful look. "It took time for the Order to abide by his words, and I’m certain it will be the same for his little wife."
"Marceline, this is just a front," he replied with conviction. "The Zorkens claim she’ll lead the mission, but in truth, she’ll be miles away from it. Then, when things go well, she’ll be the first to take credit..."
His eyes glinted darkly. "If there is anything I despise, it is when someone takes credit they do not deserve."
"Hah. You think so lowly of the Zorken matriarch."
"I do not think low of her," he corrected. "If anything, I believe she will be the Order’s downfall."
"And what makes you think that?"
"The Zorkens have nearly fallen too many times — even before Nathalie," he explained. "Women in the Order have always been their curse. It has been this way long before Nathalie or Naylani Zorken. Even in the old texts, it is prophesied that a woman will rise among the Zorken... and from her, their ruins will follow."
Marceline chuckled, amused by his history lesson. She lifted her glass in acknowledgment before taking another sip.
"That’s interesting," she hummed. "Does that mean... Atlas might die?"
The man arched a brow, clearly not what he meant.
"Don’t do anything foolish, Marceline," he warned. "You’re a smart woman. Don’t let your greed control you and lead you to your doom. We may be allies now, but that won’t stop me from taking what I can if you fall."
"The feeling is mutual," she shot back sharply as she stood. "Don’t do anything foolish yourself. This partnership ends the moment you start a war against any of the founding families."
She paused at the door, glancing over her shoulder with a smirk. "And no, I do not have a portrait of Atlas’ wife. Even I have yet to see her face. However, I do hope you enjoyed that drink."
With that, she exited the drawing room. The man scoffed and licked his inner cheek as the door shut.
Instead of leaving the Monreal estate, he leaned back and chugged another mouthful of whiskey. His gaze grew distant as his thoughts deepened.
"Ravah, huh?" he murmured. "Atlas is going to mess this up... letting his wife set foot in that place."
A wicked grin stretched across his lips, eyes reflecting a sinister delight. "They should never have underestimated Ravah... or trusted that sly fox Henrik."
"But this is what makes this society interesting again."
Meanwhile...
