Behind the walls of the closet, Lucy held her breath.
She hated her vulnerability and hated the fact that she couldn’t find the strength to come out and slap him.
It didn’t matter to her that he chose his first love for her. That, she could understand. They were in a compensated marriage. True to paper, but still, a fake one. It was her fault for letting his gentleness and affection cloud her mind and letting his presence walk all over her until she fell deep into their charades.
And he had every right to choose the one he had loved over her, the woman he had paid to play the role of his wife just to make Yvonne return to him.
But Landon had no right to trespass on her best friend’s home. She had never seen him like this. Not even when Yvonne tried to hide from him when she first returned to the country.
So why did he come here? They were done.
The divorce agreement has their signatures now.
She expected he wouldn’t waste time to hand it over to the civil office to have it processed. Yet, here he was.
"I don’t know who you’re talking about." The tremendous pressure he was pouring on her shook Vanessa’s voice. She had never met someone like Landon. Yes, she met wealthy and influential people. But the authority that Landon commanded with just his appearance overwhelmed her.
And Lucy compared him to an angel?
Just where? Where did she see that in him?
All Vanessa could see was the devil looking down on her, seeing through her lies.
"You know who I’m talking about." Landon didn’t believe her lie.
Initially, he hesitated to enter the apartment. He was neither a cur nor raised bastardly to enter a woman’s living abode. And in no normal circumstances would he dare to pressurize a woman he had met the first time. That behavior was something he had frowned upon and loathed to become.
Yet, the moment he smelled her scent, the unique smell of shampoo made of vanilla and mint, snapped his sanity. That’s all he needed to know that Lucy was here.
He would never mistake her scent for another.
Landon moved his eyes across the room in front of him. "Lucy, if you’re here. I know you’re inside. But please, come out and talk to me."
The door was open, and he could just walk over to find her inside. But something inside him was stopping him. He just knew that the moment his foot crossed the threshold of that door, she would never look at him ever again.
So, he stood there, outside, watching the darkened room for any sign of Lucy. A sign that she would want to see him as much as he did.
And he imagined, for a fleeting, painful moment, that she would walk out of the room and tell him why she left without a word.
"Like I said, I don’t know why you are doing this! Get out or I’ll call the police!" Vanessa pushed him away, expecting him to resist.
But Landon didn’t.
He let himself be pushed as he hit the wall behind him. His eyes never lose their focus on the room in front of him, waiting and waiting for his wife to come out and look at him. It was as if any physical attack on him didn’t affect him. Anything anyone hurled at him didn’t matter.
