Chapter 122
“You want motive?” I say, my voice trembling with restrained fury. “How about wanting the baby gone? She told me to get rid of my baby, Noah. She threatened me. Said if I didn’t, I’d regret it. Isn’t that motive enough?”
My voice cracks, but I press on, the words spilling before I can stop them. “If the baby hadn’t survived, her plan would’ve been perfect. If it wasn’t for the investigation into the faulty equipment, no one would’ve questioned a thing. I would’ve just been another tragic case. An unfortunate accident that took both me and the baby.”
My pulse races as my thoughts darken. And who’s to say the equipment incident wasn’t part of her plan, too? If that thing had fallen on me, I’d have been crushed to death. And so would my baby. Problem solved.
“That’s too much of a stretch” his jaw locked.
I stare at him, disbelief curling in my chest. “A stretch?” I echo, my voice trembling with something between anger and hurt. “Noah, this is Brook we’re talking about. She’s hated me for years. You think she wouldn’t cross a line if she thought it’d get me out of the picture for good?”
He exhales sharply, running a hand through his hair. “You don’t know what you’re saying.”
“Oh, I know exactly what I’m saying,” I bite back. “You just don’t want to hear it.”
His eyes snap to mine, gray and burning. “You think she tried to kill you? Do you even hear yourself?”
I flinch at the edge in his tone, but I don’t back down. “She’s isn’t the sain you think she is. You’re too fucking blind to see just how malicious she can.”
Something flashes in his eyes but It’s gone too fast to tell.
He clenches his jaw and looks away. “You’re grasping at straws.”
“No, you’re refusing to face reality,” I whisper. “Because you don’t want to admit you may have been wrong about her.”
The silence that follows is deafening.
Noah’s entire body goes still, like my words just cut deeper than I meant them to. His throat works as he swallows hard, but he doesn’t say anything.
“Forget it,” I murmur, sinking back into the pillows. My chest feels tight, my heart pounding too fast. “You’re never going to see it, even if it smacks you on the face.”
For a long moment, he just stands there torn between defending Brook and something else he can’t name. Finally, he mutters, “You need rest,” his voice low, almost brittle.
I lift my eyes to his, my voice low but cutting. “And let’s not forget you, Noah.”
His eyes narrow. “Me?”
“You sure have motive to want me gone,” I say quietly. “You didn’t want the baby. You made that very clear. But I refused to get an abortion. So what if this was your way of solving your problem? Get rid of both me and the baby.”
The words hang in the air like poison.
He stares at me, disbelief and fury flashing across his face. “You seriously think I would do this?” he growls, his voice low and dangerous.
“You’ve always hated me,” I whisper. “And that hatred only grew when I got pregnant.”
