Chapter 144
“Did you get him?”
“Yes, sir,” one of the bodyguards replies, his voice crisp through the speaker. “He tried to run, but we caught him before he could get far.”
“What did he say?” Noah’s tone is calm, but there’s a quiet edge to it that makes the air in the car feel heavier.
“He’s a reporter,” the man answers. “Said he got an anonymous tip. Someone told him to be at the hospital if he wanted a ‘juicy story.“”
Every muscle in my body goes still. An anonymous tip? Who the hell would do that?
“Did you verify his identity?” Noah asks, eyes still fixed on the road ahead.
“Yes, sir. He checks out–legitimate press. We also confiscated his phone. Sam’s already wiping the photos from his gallery and iCloud.”
“Good,” Noah says flatly. “Did he mention how he was contacted?”
“Through text.”
“Once Sam’s done, have him trace that number.”
“Understood, sir.”
Noah ends the call and exhales slowly, his knuckles drumming once against the wheel, while I’m left wondering what kind of bodyguards he hired. Judging by what I’ve heard, they seem to be more than just bodyguards.
The car goes quiet again; the weight of silence feels heavier than before.
Outside, the city flashes by, but all I can focus on is him. The way his jaw ticks, how his fingers tighten around the steering wheel just slightly before relaxing again. There’s something in his eyes. That cold, focused glint that reminds me just how dangerous he can be when pushed.
For a moment, I forget to breathe. Because as terrifying as that look is… it also makes me feel weirdly safe. 1
Lilly shifts beside me, her hand brushing mine in silent comfort. I appreciate it, even if I don’t say it aloud.
The rest of the drive passes in uneasy silence, broken only by the hum of the tires on wet asphalt.
Noah’s phone buzzes again. He answers without hesitation. “Report.”
A pause.
“We are two cars down.”
“Good. Stay close.”
He hangs up and glances briefly at me through the mirror but doesn’t say anything.
I sigh, ready for this to be completely over and for me to collapse on my bed.
Lilly leans forward, as if sensing what I’m thinking and says. “We are almost home, and then you can finally rest.”
“Yeah,” I say softly.
The word feels fragile in my mouth.

When we finally pull up to my house, I breathe in relief. The garden looks the same as when I left it. The same flowers Mom helped me plant months ago are still standing tall. But something in the air feels different. Like something’s changed.
Lilly jumps out first, rushing to unlock the door. Noah circles around to grab my bag before I can protest. I follow slowly, the warm sun on my face, yet I don’t feel its warmth.
Lilly pushes the door open and freezes.
The smell hits first… dust, something metallic, and the faint stench of rotting fruit. Then the sight. My entire living room is destroyed.
Couch cushions slashed open, books torn apart, drawers dumped, glass shattered across the floor. My TV is cracked right down the center, hanging half off the stand. The curtains are ripped.
I stop dead in the doorway, my stomach twisting. “What the-”
Lilly gasps, her hand flying to her mouth. “Oh my God.”
Noah moves past us in an instant, scanning the room, his posture tense and alert. “Stay here,” he orders, his voice low and commanding.
Within minutes, the black SUV that was tailing us pulls into the driveway. Four men jump out, two rushing into the house, two staying close to the door.
Lilly grabs my arm and helps me sit on the edge of the hallway bench, though I barely feel my legs. My throat is dry, my mind spinning.
This is my home. My safe place… And someone turned it into a war zone.
He nods once, eyes scanning the destruction. “This doesn’t feel like a normal robbery.”
The thought makes my skin crawl. “Then why would anyone do this?”
He doesn’t answer.
A few minutes later, the two guards return. One of them, Thomas, looks grim. “Sir, no one’s here. No fresh prints, no movement. Judging from the dust on some surfaces, this wasn’t done today. Maybe three or four days ago.”
