Chapter 186

The hot chocolate arrives. She wraps her hands around the cup… or tries to, but they still shake so badly she can barely hold it steady.

“Here,” I murmur, sliding closer.

I cover her hands with mine just enough to hold the cup for her. Her breath hitches, and her shoulders drop a fraction.

“It’s okay,” I say quietly. “You’re safe. I’ve got you.”

Her throat works as she tries to swallow down the fear. For a moment, she just lets me hold her hands. I can feel each tremor through her skin. Each shiver. Each silent attempt to regain control.

She finally exhales, leaning slightly into the warmth of the drink.

We sit like that for a while, and eventually, the tremors lessen, her breathing evens out and her shoulders relax.

When her hands are more stable, she reaches into her bag and pulls out her phone. Her thumb moves fast over the screen, typing something, deleting it, and typing again. Then she finally hits send.

I pretend I’m not watching, but I am.

“Better?” I ask.

She nods, meeting my gaze for the first time since the attack.

“Yes.” She says before taking a sip of the hot chocolate. “I didn’t even know I needed this. How did you know this would help?”

“When you have sisters, you have to learn a few things here and there.” I smile at her.

A small laugh escapes her lips. “No wonder you’re so good at comforting someone. Thank you.”

The sincerity in her voice hits me harder than the punch did, and I feel this emotion rising in me. I can’t name it yet, but maybe it’s my protective instincts. 2

I clear my throat. “You don’t need to thank me… I’m glad I could help.”

“Do you realize this is the second time you’re saving me? And also, the second time you’re comforting me after something terrible happened?”

She gives a small, real smile. The first since the date ended.

“Really? I don’t remember saving you a first time.”

“You did. After my first appointment. I was almost run over by a car, but you pulled me just in time.”

I’d already forgotten that. I just remember rushing out to give her the scans. I didn’t even think when I did it.

“Well, I guess I’m your superhero now, eh?” I tease. “You can call me superman and you can be my Lois Lane.”

This time she laughs, and it’s such a cute sound.

“It’s a cheesy line, but funny at the same time.”

“Hey, there is nothing like saving a damsel in distress… isn’t that what happens in fairytale movies?”

She chuckles, “Most, but not all.”

“Which princess movie doesn’t have a handsome prince saving his princess?”

“Are we seriously talking about princess movies?” she giggles and the sound hits me straight in my fucking heart.

“Yes,” I grin, “And you haven’t answered my question.”

“How about I leave that as your homework?”

For a moment I freeze before a smile takes over. I don’t think she realizes what she just hinted at. 1

“So, does that mean there is a next time?”

Her eyes widen, as if she just realized that she hinted at there being a next time. Another date.

“Oh, I–I,” she stumbles over her words, “I didn’t mean it like that… I meant–only if you…”

Ah, fuck! why do I find everything she does so cute?

“Is it too early to ask you on an official date?” I blurt, cutting her off. 1

She stills, her eyes widen and a pink tint coats her cheeks.

For a second, I’m sure I’ve made a fool of myself. But then she turns and smiles shyly. A soft, surprised smile that lights up her whole face.

“I’d like that,” she says.

My heart kicks against my ribs, so that for a moment I forget to breathe. As her words settle, I smile, feeling so fucking happy that I’m surprised at myself.

Her phone pings and she checks it before quickly sliding it back into her bag. “I think I should go now. I don’t want to get home late.”

I nod. “Alright, I’ll walk you out.”

There is no fucking way I’m making the same mistake twice. What if whoever tried to kidnap her is waiting for a chance to strike again?
