Chapter 185
ADRIAN.
She walks away with that soft smile, the kind that tugs at something in my chest, and for a few seconds I just stand there like an idiot, watching the gentle sway of her steps as she disappears.
I’ll be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy myself. Even with the company of my boys, I’ve never felt like this. This free. This relaxed.
Sighing, I close my eyes briefly, intending to go back inside the café. I just don’t want to go back to my empty penthouse just yet, but something stops me. It literally feels like I can’t take a step back into the café. Almost like something invisible is stopping me.
I can’t explain it, but for some reason, something feels off and a certain kind of unease sits heavily on my chest. The kind of unease that refuses to settle
Maybe I should’ve walked her to her car. Maybe I should’ve insisted… I don’t know what it is, but I get this weird feeling that I shouldn’t have let her go alone.
I scrub a hand over my jaw and shake my head. I’m being paranoid. This city has its risks, yes, but this area is safe. It’s busy and Well–lit. That’s why I chose it, because I wanted Sierra to feel comfortable and safe. And Sierra didn’t look scared. Just tired, and I get that with her pregnancy, that is to be expected.
With the feeling pressing down on my chest like a fucking boulder, I turn toward the parking lot. Usually, I’d take my time walking. It usually helps me with clearing my head, but today everything is different. I walk fast, my legs moving with an urgency I don’t understand.
I was just heading towards my car when I heard it. A muffled, sharp yelp that freezes every muscle in my body.
My head snaps up… And that unease I brushed off? It spikes into something cold, because there she is, Sierra, being dragged.
A man has his arm locked around her waist, hauling her backward toward a white van. She’s kicking and clawing, but he’s strong, and her voice is swallowed by his gloved hand clamped over her mouth.
“HEY!” My shout rips out of me, raw.
I don’t think. I sprint, my legs carrying me as if they have a mind of their own.

The guy jerks, startled, and that second is enough. Sierra’s heel slams down on his foot, he loosens for a heartbeat, and I ram into him with my full weight and we hit the ground hard.
He scrambles up surprisingly fast, swinging a wild punch that clips my jaw. Pain flares, but I ignore it. I shove him back, ready to go again, but he jumps into the van. It screeches away before I can grab the handle.
“Fuck!” I roar, but the van is already disappearing into the traffic.
My heartbeat is thundering in my ears as I turn to Sierra. She’s on the ground, palms pressed to the concrete, breathing fast with her hands trembling violently.
“Sierra?” I crouch. “Hey–hey, look at me. Are you hurt?”
She shakes her head, her voice barely a whisper. “I–I’m okay. I’m–Adrian… thank you.” Her words break off, swallowed by a shudder.
“You’re not okay.” I help her up gently.

“I’m just shaken.” She swallows, eyes glossy. “But I’m fine thanks to you.”
Fine. She’s trying to be, but her fingers won’t stop trembling, and her tears won’t disappear no matter how many times she tries to blink them away.
Fuck! Why does seeing her like this feel like my heart is constricting? Like someone is squeezing the life out of me?
I don’t know her that well, something that I’m planning on changing, but still, there is just something about her that pulls me. Draws me to her.
I slide a hand to her upper back. “Come on, let’s get inside. You need a minute for your brain to process.
She nods faintly, letting me guide her back toward the cafe. Her breaths are shallow, the kind someone forces because the real ones are too shaky.
Inside, it’s warm and bright. It’s exactly what she needs after someone just tried to kidnap her.
I get her seated and signal the barista. “Hot chocolate. Extra warm.”
She sits with her elbows on the table, hands clasped tightly. I pull out the chair beside her and watch her.
