SIERRA.

I run my fingers gently through Nolan’s soft hair as he sleeps across my lap. He’s completely knocked out after Aunt Ava gave him some medicine for a stomach ache.

He refused to sleep anywhere else and insisted he’d be most comfortable on my lap even after I told him my bump would get in the way.

“Noah has been staring at you,” Lilly says casually, sipping her drink.

I glance up and sure enough, he’s back in the same spot across the yard, watching me in a way I haven’t seen since we were in university.

I noticed it earlier too, before Nolan crawled into my lap, but I ignored it. Ignored him. Because what exactly am I supposed to do about it?

Noah and I are done and we’ve been done for a long time. The only thing tying us together now is the baby and he made it very clear he wanted nothing to do with that.

“I know,” I whisper, continuing to run my fingers through Nolan’s hair.

He sighs softly in his sleep and shifts. I adjust him carefully so my back doesn’t start screaming at me later, but he doesn’t wake.

“That doesn’t bother you?” Lilly asks, arching a brow. “I mean, he’s been staring at you like you’re an interesting piece of art since this party started.”

My eyes drift back to Noah for a brief second. The moment they land on him, he straightens like he’s been caught, but I look away again.

“Why would it?” I shrug lightly. “He can look all he wants. It’s not like I can control where his eyes go.” Then I add, almost dismissively, “Besides, maybe he’s staring at Nolan.”

Lilly shakes her head slowly, glancing at him before looking back at me.

“I don’t think it’s that,” she says thoughtfully. “It’s like he’s realized something. Like he wants to talk to you… or maybe he’s finally figured out he wants you in his life.”

A laugh escapes me before I can stop it.
