After what feels like forever, there’s a knock on the door.
I quickly stand up and open it. The nanny is standing there with the twins, both of them looking bright and excited in a way that feels almost out of place here.
“I’ll wait outside,” the nanny says softly.
I nod and look down at them. “Be careful, okay? Sierra is still hurt.”
They nod eagerly, already trying to move past me. After they give me nods, I step aside and let them in.
“Aunt Sierra, we’re here!” Nova announces loudly as they rush toward the bed like twin hurricanes.
For the first time since I walked in, Sierra reacts and you have no idea what a fucking relief that is.
Sierra’s head turns slowly, almost comically before she looks at them.
At first, there’s confusion in her expression, like she’s trying to place what she’s seeing, but then it clears, and something like warmth flashes in those orbs.
The twins climb onto the bed carefully, settling on either side of her as they hug her and press kisses against her cheeks.
Sierra doesn’t speak or move, but she watches them. Her eyes fixed on their faces.
They start talking immediately, their voices filling the room in a way nothing else has been able to.
Their words overlap, excitement spilling over as they speak, and Sierra just listens.
They tell her about school, about the flowers they planted, about Nolan winning first place in a math competition and Nova winning first prize in art and both of them getting rooms of their own.
“Did you know our sister has her own room?” Nova asks, with a big smile, “Daddy calls it a nursery.”
“Yeah, we even helped Dad decorate it and pick the furniture,” Nolan says, “And her room is right between ours.”
For a second, Sierra blinks, but that is enough reaction for me. It’s more than enough because it means she’s still in there somewhere.
