Just as I’m about to leave, my phone buzzes in my hand. I glance down, expecting it to be Aunt Harper, but instead, Lilly’s name flashes across the screen, followed by a text message.

[I’m outside.]

I frown slightly, surprised because I wasn’t expecting her to come all the way here. I thought we would just meet at Aunt Harper and Uncle Gabe’s house.

“Mom, Lilly’s outside,” I say, slipping my phone into my bag.

She looks up , a small smile forming on her lips. “Didn’t know she was the one driving you there.”l

“Me too,” I press a quick kiss to her cheek. “I’ll see you later, okay?”

“Be safe,” she says softly.

“I will… and you too” I reply, “Remember you don’t have to do anything today. Just rest and I’ll come back with something for us to eat.”

She doesn’t look happy about it, but she agrees since we both know, with the truth still hanging over us, she probably won’t do much today.

I leave, and the moment I step outside, I spot Lilly’s car parked right in front of the house. I make my way over and slide into the passenger seat, turning to look at her.

“You didn’t have to come all the way here, you know.”

“I know,” She shrugs like it’s nothing. “I just wanted a moment between us. Just the two of us before you meet Mom.”

Something about that makes me smile and for a second, we just sit there before she turns on the ignition and pulls away.

“How are you doing? Like… really?”

I would usually brush it off, but not today. Today I don’t feel like giving the practiced answer I’m used. Besides this is Lilly we are talking about, she’ll keep pushing and pushing, getting on my nerves.

She’s silent for a second before she nods her head, “Yeah, I see it now… I would have also had a hard time believing you.”

“See” I tell her, “I was justified.”

“But you do realize our stories are now almost identical, right?” She asks, “We both didn’t know our dad and then later found out that they’re rich.”

Well technically she’s right, the only difference being that she didn’t find out about her father when she was already a full grown adult.

“And another thing,” she continues, her tone shifting slightly as she grins at me, “we don’t even need Noah anymore to be official family.”

I shake my head, amused. “I’ve been telling you for years that I don’t need to be married to Noah for that to become a reality.”

She points at me. “Hmm, turns out you were actually right, we just didn’t know just how right you were.”
