The Billionaire's Insignificant Wife novel Chapter 134

Chains Forged

Daniel arrived at the mansion just as the sun began to tilt toward the west.

His car stopped at the main entrance. He stepped out with decisive strides without waiting for the driver to open the door.

Marcus followed behind with a tablet and briefcase.

“Handle all remaining work for today,” said Daniel without looking back. “Confirm by message once it’s done. I have matters to attend to inside.”

“Yes, Sir.”

Daniel walked straight into the mansion. He passed through the foyer without acknowledging the servants who bowed respectfully.

Heading directly to the basement.

To the private security room where Mrs. Helen was waiting.

Mr. Harris was already standing at the door. He opened it the moment he saw Daniel approaching.

“Sir.”

Daniel gave a brief nod. He entered the small, windowless room.

Mrs. Helen sat in a chair with her head bowed. Her back was rigid with tension. Her hands were clenched in her lap.

She did not dare look up at Daniel as he entered.

Daniel sat in the chair across from her. He studied the woman who had worked for his family for nearly twenty

years.

Without preamble, he spoke.

“I am deeply disappointed, Mrs. Helen.”

Daniel’s voice was calm but cold. More frightening than a shout.

Mrs. Helen grew even more tense. Her body trembled slightly.

“Forgive me, Sir,” she whispered faintly.

“I had already given you a final warning,” Daniel continued. “To be more obedient. Not to help Alina defy me. Yet you betrayed my trust.”

Mrs. Helen lifted her head slightly. Tears were already streaming down her cheeks.

“Forgive me, Mr. Daniel. I didn’t mean to-”

“Didn’t mean to what?” Daniel cut her off. “Didn’t mean to take photographs of evidence of abuse? Didn’t mean to send them to Emma to damage my reputation? Then what exactly were your intentions, Mrs. Helen?”

Mrs. Helen’s tears fell harder. “I only felt sorry seeing Mrs. Alina hurt. I couldn’t bear to-”

“Your job is not to feel sorry. Your job is to work according to my instructions.”

Daniel tightened his jaw. Then he reached into the inside pocket of his jacket.

Several sheets of paper, neatly folded.

He unfolded them with slow, deliberate movements. He laid them on the table in front of Mrs. Helen.

The woman stared at the papers with wide eyes.

A complete medical record of her husband’s heart condition. Including his regular check-up schedule and the treatment costs covered by Blackwood Corp’s insurance.

An employment acceptance letter for Mrs. Helen’s daughter at a Blackwood subsidiary in the neighboring city.

Proof of tuition payments for her two grandchildren at the finest private school. All covered under the Blackwood company’s education allowance for senior staff families.

Mrs. Helen felt the blood drain from her face.

“Mr. Daniel-”

“I will not hesitate to destroy everything you have if you continue to defy me,” said Daniel in a flat tone that was more terrifying than any raised voice. “Your husband loses his health insurance. Your daughter is fired. Your grandchildren are expelled from school. That is how easily I can ruin you, Mrs. Helen. It only takes one phone call from me.”

Mrs. Helen panicked. Both her hands trembled violently.

“Sir, please. Don’t involve my family. They know nothing. This is my fault alone. Please—”

“Be grateful for your effort in getting Alina to eat today,” Daniel cut in. “If not for that, I might have already thrown you out of this house. And destroyed the lives of your entire family.”

Mrs. Helen wept harder. Her body bent forward.

“Thank you, Sir. Thank you. Forgive me—”

“I am giving you one final chance to obey me,” said Daniel, leaning back in his chair. “I know Alina trusts only you. You even managed to get her to eat. That is useful to me.”

He fixed Mrs. Helen with a sharp gaze.

“I will remove you from your position as head housekeeper. That is your punishment for your mistake. But I will not dismiss you entirely.”

Mrs. Helen lifted her head. She looked at Daniel through tear-filled eyes.

“In exchange, you have a special duty,” Daniel continued. “To remain at Alina’s side. To care for her and watch over her on my behalf. Report her every move. Every word she speaks. Every action she takes. Every person who attempts to contact her.”

Mrs. Helen felt a heavy weight pressing on her chest.

Relief that she had not been dismissed. That her family was safe.

And yet utterly broken by the new duty she was now forced to carry.

She would have to betray Alina.

Would have to become Daniel’s spy, monitoring the very woman who had been kind to her.

But Mrs. Helen had no choice.

Daniel could truly destroy her family if she defied him again.

Her husband needed regular medical care. Her daughter needed her job to support her children. Her grandchildren needed their education.

All of it depended on the Blackwood family’s generosity.

In a sob-choked whisper, Mrs. Helen spoke.

“Thank you, Mr. Daniel. I… I will carry out my duties well.”

Daniel glanced at Mr. Harris, who stood behind him.

A silent signal.

Mr. Harris stepped forward. He placed a thick folder on the table.

“These are the documents for your new employment agreement,” said Daniel. “Read them carefully.”

Mrs. Helen took the folder with trembling hands. She opened it.

She read line by line, her breathing growing increasingly labored.

A written agreement stating that Mrs. Helen willingly accepted full responsibility for any losses suffered by the Blackwood family resulting from any wrongdoing on her part.

Including financial losses. Reputational damage. Any losses whatsoever.

And the clause that nearly made Mrs. Helen faint was the last one.

Not only she would be held responsible.

But her entire family as well.

Husband. Daughter. Grandchildren.

All would bear the consequences if Mrs. Helen betrayed him again.

“You are free to resign from this position and leave in peace,” said Daniel in a casual tone. “But you would have to relinquish every benefit the Blackwood family has provided for your family. Including the house you live in. Your husband’s ongoing medical costs. Your grandchildren’s school fees.”

Mrs. Helen stared at the document as tears streamed down her face,

Her hands shook as she held the pen that Mr. Harris extended toward her.

She knew this was not a choice.

This was coercion dressed in the language of agreement.

But what could she do?

With a stifled sob, Mrs. Helen lowered the pen to the paper.

She signed the new contract that transformed her from head housekeeper into Daniel’s informant.

Into a chain that would bind Alina more tightly within the prison of her marriage.

“I promise I will be obedient,” Mrs. Helen whispered as she signed. “I will be loyal only to you, Mr. Daniel.”

Daniel smiled thinly. Satisfied that he had won.

“Good. This time, carry out your duties well. Do not betray my trust again.” He stood. “You are to care for and attend to Alina on my behalf. Not for anyone else. Not even for Alina herself. Do you understand?”

Mrs. Helen nodded with her head bowed.

“I understand, Sir.”

Daniel turned and walked out of the room.

Mr. Harris followed behind. The door closed with a final click.

Leaving Mrs. Helen alone in that small room.

The old woman wept in silence.

Asking Alina’s forgiveness in her heart.

Consumed by guilt knowing she would no longer be able to do anything to save her.

Mrs. Helen needed to save herself and her family first.

Even if it meant betraying a woman who did not deserve to be betrayed.

On the upper floor, Clarissa heard the sound of Daniel’s car arriving.

She moved immediately.

She ran to her room. Opened the wardrobe. Selected her outfit with care.

A soft blue dress with an elegant cut. The color and style Daniel used to favor.

Clarissa remembered this well, because she was the one who often chose Daniel’s outfits before their divorce.

She touched up her appearance in front of the mirror. Adjusted her makeup. Spritzed on a light perfume.

Then descended with confident steps.

In search of Daniel.

As it happened, Daniel had just emerged from the basement after meeting with Mrs. Helen.

Clarissa welcomed him immediately with a sweet smile.

“Daniel! You’re home earlier today.”

She stepped closer. Linking her arm through his in a coquettish manner.

“Come rest for a moment. I’ve already asked the servants to prepare tea. Junior happens to be in the art room working on his assignment. We can talk in peace.”

Daniel removed Clarissa’s hand from his arm with a firm motion.

Putting distance between them as she tried to stay close.

“I don’t have time, Clarissa.”

Clarissa did not give up. She stepped forward again. Trying once more to link arms with him.

“Just briefly. Five minutes-”

Daniel seized Clarissa’s hand. Somewhat roughly. Stopping her from moving.

“Mind yourself,” he said in a sharp tone. “I don’t want others getting the wrong idea from seeing us this close.”

Clarissa was annoyed but kept her composure. Smiling though it was forced.

“No one will get the wrong idea, Daniel. I’m Junior’s mother, after all. It’s natural for us to be close.”

“You are also my ex-wife,” Daniel cut in. “Our relationship ended a long time ago. So please, conduct yourself accordingly.”

Clarissa felt fury rising to her head. But she held it back.

“Have you still not forgiven me?” asked Clarissa in a deliberately soft voice. “For being the one who asked for the divorce and left you and Junior behind?”

“I have no interest in discussing that.” Daniel released her hand. “You would do better to focus on Junior.”

Clarissa stepped forward again. Closer. Almost pressing against him.

“Is it because of Alina that you’re pulling away?”

“ENOUGH!”

Daniel snapped.

Clarissa flinched.

“I have told you multiple times that what was between us is over!” Daniel’s eyes were sharp as a blade. “Just because I allow you to maintain a relationship with Junior does not mean you can do as you please with me!”

Clarissa grew angrier. She was losing her composure.

“So it’s true, you’re avoiding me because of Alina! She’s the one who has twisted your mind! Made you incapable of thinking clearly-”

“Watch what you say!” Daniel snapped louder. “I will not tolerate anyone speaking ill of my wife!”

Clarissa snapped right back at him.

“What kind of wife is she?! A cheap woman who-”

BANG!

Daniel slammed his fist into the wall beside Clarissa.

The woman leapt back in fright. Her eyes wide with fear.

This was the first time she had ever seen Daniel this furious.

Throughout everything they had shared, even in their worst moments, Daniel had never shouted or lost his temper like this.

“Have you read the latest news today?” Daniel asked in a low, dangerous voice.

Clarissa swallowed. Her breath still ragged from the shock.

“The news about Alina’s pregnancy?” she said, her voice unsteady. “I know that’s a lie. It’s nothing but-”

“It’s true.”

Clarissa was stunned.

Her eyes went wide.

“What?”

“Alina is pregnant. And she will soon bear my child.”

Daniel said it with complete confidence. With a tone that brooked no doubt, as though the news were established

fact.

Clarissa shook her head sharply. “You’re lying. You must be lying-”

“I am not lying, Clarissa.” Daniel held her gaze, cold and unwavering. “Alina is pregnant. That is a fact. Which is why I am asking you to mind your behavior. Do not try to get close to me, and show proper respect to Alina, who is my wife.”

He took a step back.

“And I will not hesitate to remove you from this house if you continue to cross the line. Do you understand?”

Clarissa could not answer. She only stood frozen, her mouth open.

Daniel turned and walked away from her.

Toward the staircase. Toward the upper floor. Toward Alina’s room.

Clarissa stood alone in the corridor.

Tears began to fall down her cheeks.

But they were not tears of sorrow.

They were tears of resentment. Rage. Hatred.

Her hands clenched so tightly that her nails dug into her palms.

“Damned whore,” she muttered in a voice trembling with hatred. “That cheap woman is actually pregnant. Actually carrying Daniel’s child.”

Her fury reached its peak.

“I will not allow her to give birth to another heir for the Blackwood family. I will not allow any child other than Junior to have a claim on this family’s inheritance. Even if I have to kill that miserable baby in its mother’s womb. I will do it.”

Clarissa spoke with unbridled fury.

“I will make certain that child never sees the light of day. If I must, I will tear open Alina’s stomach and pull that wretched thing out with my own hands. I will not let them live. I WILL NOT!”
