Chapter 150 The Statement Part 2
Eve spoke, voice steady. “Over the last twenty-four hours, claims have circulated suggesting that the competition is rigged or influenced by personal grievances. Those claims are false.”
The production rep nodded slightly.
Eve continued. “I understand public concern. Food is personal. Competition is emotional. And every chef
in that kitchen brings passion, skill, and commitment.”
The lawyer tilted his head, listening more carefully now.
Eve’s throat burned with anger, but she kept her voice calm. “I also acknowledge that contestant Mathew and I have professional history. That history has no influence on scoring.”
The lawyer’s eyes narrowed. “Be careful.”
Eve didn’t flinch. “If I don’t acknowledge it, he controls the narrative. If I do, I take away the mystery.”
Ryan spoke quietly. “Let her finish.”
Eve continued. “I do not score contestants. I do not decide placements. The judging panel evaluates dishes based on performance and quality, and that is the standard I have upheld from the beginning.”
Alexander typed fast, eyes flicking up to ensure he captured her tone.
Eve added, “I respect every contestant who has chosen to compete. I will not allow rumours to distract from their work or the integrity of the competition.”
She paused, then looked to the production representative. “I also want transparency tightened.”
The woman blinked. “What do you mean?”
Eve’s voice stayed calm. “Clearer scoring visibility. Reinforced boundaries. Structure that the public can
see.”
Legal counsel hesitated. “That’s… an operational decision.”
Eve’s eyes held his. “It’s also a reputational one. If you want to stop speculation, you give people structure.
Ryan nodded once. “Do it.”
Alexander added the lines as Eve dictated: “To reinforce transparency, we are implementing clearer
scoring visibility and strengthened production boundaries.”
Eve leaned back slightly. “Now your line, Ryan.”
Ryan’s gaze stayed on Eve. “No over-explaining,” he said aloud, more to the room than to her.
Then he spoke clearly, and Alexander typed.

“I stand behind my wife’s integrity. She is not alone, and she will not be reduced to a headline.”
Eve felt something in her chest loosen, just a fraction.
The lawyer nodded reluctantly. “That’s solid.”
Alexander turned the laptop toward Eve. “Read it.”
Eve scanned the statement.
It was firm.
Controlled.
Human enough to sound like her.
Cold enough to deny drama.
It didn’t beg.
It didn’t attack Mathew.
It didn’t give him a new fight.
It gave the public clarity.
Eve looked up. “Release it.”
Alexander nodded immediately. “We’ll push it across official accounts. Production will share it too.”
Ryan’s gaze moved to the production rep. “And you tighten transparency.”
The woman nodded. “Yes, Mr Ashbrook.”
Eve’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Today.”
The production rep swallowed. “Today.”
The statement went out before midday.
It appeared first on the competition’s official page. Then on Eve’s verified account. Then on Ashbrook-related channels that mattered, not corporate, but personal. News outlets copied it.
Claim
Commentators dissected it. The same crowd that had sharpened knives overnight now tried to find new
angles to cut from the words.
Eve sat with Ryan and Alexander watching the shift in real time, not because she wanted validation, but
because she needed to know whether the fire was still spreading.
The comments didn’t suddenly become kind.
Some people still wanted scandal.
PR nonsense.
They’re covering it up.

Of course she’d say that.
She didn’t apologise, arrogant.
But the tone cracked.
Others began to hesitate.
She acknowledged the history. That’s bold.
She didn’t scream or cry. Interesting.
If it was personal, she would’ve disqualified him.
Why did Mathew leak clips instead of filing a complaint?
He’s acting like a sore loser.
The statement is actually respectful.
Maybe he’s lying.
Eve’s jaw stayed tight, but her breathing steadied.
Ryan leaned slightly toward her. “See?”
Eve didn’t smile. “It’s not enough.”
“It’s not meant to be enough,” Ryan replied. “It’s meant to stop the bleeding.”
Eve stared at the screen. “And if he cuts again?”
Ryan’s gaze hardened. “Then we’re ready.”
When they returned to the studio later, everything felt colder.
Not in temperature.
In attitude.
Crew moved with sharper caution. Contestants watched each other more carefully. Phones were
everywhere, hands holding screens like weapons, eyes flicking down and up like nervous ticks.
Eve walked in with her spine straight.
Camila and Mitre were already there, waiting. Camila’s expression was controlled, but her eyes were fierce. Mitre stood beside her, quiet, steady.
Tevin and Maxwell approached Eve near the judging area.
Tevin exhaled dramatically. “That was a mess.”
Eve gave him a look. “Welcome to my world.”
Maxwell’s voice stayed serious. “The statement was clean.”

Ryan nodded. “It had to be.”
Tevin leaned closer to Eve, teasing lightly to cut the tension. “You’re scary when you’re calm.”
Eve’s tone was dry. “I’m scary when I’m quiet too. People just don’t notice until it’s too late.”
Tevin chuckled, then sobered. “Mathew’s not done.”
Eve’s gaze slid past them, toward the edges.
Clam
Mathew stood at a distance where he could see without being obvious. He wasn’t performing sympathy
anymore. There was no wounded softness in his face. His jaw was set. His eyes sharp.
Eve felt the shift in him like a change in weather.
He wasn’t trying to win public pity now.
He was moving into retaliation.
Camila noticed Eve’s focus and followed it. Her lips pressed together. “That man…”
Mitre’s voice was low. “He’s watching.”
