18 The Woman He Let Walk Away
Ryan barely slept. When morning came, it found him at his desk, sleeves rolled, eyes bloodshot, her letter unfolded in front of him like scripture he couldn’t stop reciting. Every word carved deeper, every line accusing him of something he could no longer undo.
He didn’t go into the office. Instead, he called Tevin
“Meet me at Gennings,” he said simply.
There was a pan on the line, heavy and wary. “Ryan, you sure?”
“I’m already on my way.”
He hung up before Tevin could argue.
The drive blurred, his thoughts circling relentlessly. He gripped the wheel, knuckles pale, Eve’s handwriting flashing in his mind: By the time you read this, I’ll be gone.
The restaurant came into view, unassuming on the corner of a busy street. Its windows were fogged from the morning rush, the scent of frying butter and coffee drifting faintly into the street. A place built on routine, warmth, belonging, the opposite of what he had given her.
Ryan parked across the road and sat for a moment his chest tight. Eve had walked through those doors every day. Tied an apron. Worked shifts. Smiled at strangers. All while he treated her like she was invisible.
The thought made his throat close.
Tevin’s car pulled up behind his. His friend slid out, tall, easygoing by nature, but today his
expression was carved in caution. “Ryan,” he said, coming up beside him. “You sure you want to do this here? In public?”
Ryan’s jaw clenched. “She worked here. I need to know why she didn’t tell me. I need to know
where she went.”
Together, they crossed the street.
Inside, the restaurant buzzed with the noise of clattering dishes and the murmur of conversations. A few heads turned at Ryan’s entrance, he was hard to miss in his tailored coat, his aura too sharp
for such a humble place. But he didn’t notice.
His eyes scanned the room. No Eve. Only bustling waitresses and a cook shouting orders over the
counter.
Tevin put a hand on his shoulder, steadying. “Let’s just talk to the owner.”
Ryan moved to the back, where a stocky man with graying hair and tired eyes wiped down the

counter. He looked up, wary, as Ryan approached.
“You must be Mr. Vargo,” Ryan said, voice low but direct.
The man stilled, rag in hand. “And you must be Ashbrook.”

There was no warmth in the greeting. Just a weight of recognition, as though Eve’s quiet shadow had always been expected to be followed one day by this storm.
“I need to know where my wife is,” Ryan said, his throat tightening around the words. “Please. Tell me where she went.”
Vargo’s eyes softened for only a fraction of a second before hardening again. ” Didn’t think you’d care. But since you asked, she resigned last week.”
The words hit Ryan like a physical blow.
“Resigned?” His voice cracked despite his best effort to control it.
“Yes. Clean break. Said she had other plans. The best chef I had here. Top restaurant quality,” Vargo leaned on the counter, his gaze steady. “She didn’t tell me where. Didn’t owe me that much. And even if she had… I’m not sure I’d be the one to give her away.”
Ryan’s hand tightened into a fist against the polished wood. He forced himself to breathe, to swallow back the anger that wasn’t truly anger at all, just desperation disguised. “Please,” he said again, voice breaking this time. “I need to find her.”
The older man’s jaw flexed. He studied Ryan for a long, quiet moment. Finally, he shook his head.” She wanted peace. If she didn’t tell you herself, maybe you should respect that.”
Ryan swayed slightly, like the ground had shifted beneath him. Respect her wish to vanish? Respect the silence he had built between them like a fortress? He couldn’t. Not anymore.
“Thank you,” Tevin said quickly, steering Ryan back before the weight of the refusal turned into something else.
They stepped outside. The sun was too bright, the air too crisp, the world too indifferent to the hollow ache gnawing Ryan’s chest.
“She’s gone,” Ryan murmured, more to himself than to Tevin. “She really left me.”
Tevin exhaled slowly. “She didn’t leave because she hated you, Ryan. From the sound of it, she left because she loved you, and she thought she had no other choice.”
Ryan leaned against the car, eyes burning. He wanted to argue. To shout. To blame Eve. To blame anyone but himself. But the truth was undeniable. He had pushed her into silence, into invisibility, until the only way she could breathe was by leaving him behind.
Tevin placed a hand on his shoulder. “We’re not done. If she’s not here, then there is only one other

place she could be. Her father’s house.”

Ryan stiffened at the mention of her father. The man was the root of all this, the blackmail, the contract, the forced vows. The thought of facing him twisted Ryan’s gut with rage and disgust. But if there was even the slightest chance Eve was there…
“I’ll go,” Tevin said gently. “I’ll ask. It doesn’t have to be you.”
“No.” Ryan shook his head, firm, resolute. “This is mine. My failure. My cross to carry.” He pushed away from the car, his expression hardening with purpose. “If her father knows anything, I’ll hear it. If not, her brother will. One way or another, I’ll find her.”
Tevin studied him a moment, then nodded. “Then we go together. You’re not walking into that
house alone.”
Ryan’s lips pressed into a thin line, but he didn’t argue. For once, he wasn’t too proud to accept the
hand being offered.
They slid into the car, the city stretching ahead of them like a battlefield Ryan had no map for. His pulse pounded, his heart ached, and yet, beneath the wreckage, one truth burned steady.
He couldn’t let her go.
Not like this.
Not when she was the woman he had let walk away
