Chapter 64 The Accident and Confrontation

Ryan’s POV.

Claim

The drive to Maple Junction was short, but the silence inside the car stretched endlessly. The hum of the tyres and the low growl of the engine were the only sounds. Eve sat beside him, hands resting on her belly, gaze turned toward the passing blur of city lights. Her calmness grounded him, even as his chest throbbed with rising irritation.

Kimberly had always been reckless, spoiled by their mother, enabled by Jonathan, but this? Crashing her car and calling him as though he were her personal saviour? He gripped the steering wheel tighter. His jaw was locked, his knuckles white against the leather.

When they reached the junction, the flashing hazard lights of Kimberly’s car glared in the dusk. A small crowd had gathered, curious onlookers murmuring and pointing. Ryan slowed, scanning the scene. The front of her white coupe was crushed against a lamppost, the hood smoking faintly.

He stopped a few feet away and killed the engine. For a moment, he sat there, unmoving, breathing hard through his nose. Then he shoved the door open and stepped out.

The air outside smelled of burnt rubber and oil. The chatter of strangers grated on his nerves. He pushed through the crowd, ignoring their whispers until he saw her.

Kimberly stood by the wreck, her designer dress torn at the shoulder, a small gash bleeding along her hairline. Luan was beside her, wiping her own bruised arm with a trembling hand.

Ryan’s stomach clenched.

“Kimberly,” he barked, his voice cutting through the noise. “What the hell is this?”

She turned, relief flooding her face. “Ryan, thank God,”

He didn’t let her finish. “Is this what you called me here for?”

She blinked, taken aback by the coldness in his tone. “I,”

He glanced between her and Luan, then at the car again. “You hit a lamppost. You’re not dying. You could’ve called a tow truck, or a cab. Why the hell am I here?”

Kimberly flinched, her lips parting. “I didn’t know what else to do,” she stammered. “I was scared, look, I hit my head, ”

“You’ll live,” Ryan said sharply. His patience was unraveling. He could feel the eyes of the crowd on him, feel the heat of anger crawling up his spine. “Next time, call roadside

Luan shifted uneasily beside her, a smear of blood on her cheek. “We just thought, maybe you could drive us to the hospital,” she said quietly. “Kim’s dizzy. We didn’t mean to,”

“Then call an ambulance,” Ryan snapped. “You both have phones.”

Kimberly’s expression twisted, her voice pitching higher. “Can you stop talking like some heartless robot and just help your sister? God, you’ve changed.”

“I had to,” he said, his tone low and edged. “It’s called growing up.”

Kimberly crossed her arms, defiant even with blood on her forehead. “Fine,” she said. “Then at least take us to dinner afterward. Maybe unwind a little. It’s been months since we,”

He turned on her, fury flashing in his eyes. “Don’t start, Kimberly.”

“What?” she said innocently. “It’s just dinner. Luan’s been wanting to catch up,

Her voice broke off when she saw the look on his face. He didn’t even need to speak; the disgust in his eyes said enough.

“Not happening,” he said flatly. “I’ll call you a cab.”

Kimberly pouted, brushing her hair from her face. “You’ve gotten so boring,” she muttered.” Ever since that gold-digging bitch came back, you don’t even laugh anymore.”

The words barely left her mouth before Ryan’s hand moved. The sound of the slap cracked through the air, sharp and brutal.

The crowd gasped. Luan stumbled back. Kimberly’s head snapped to the side, a bright red mark blooming across her cheek.

Ryan’s voice was low, vibrating with rage. “You will speak of Eve with respect.”

Kimberly’s eyes widened in shock before narrowing in fury. “Respect?” she spat, clutching her face. “For the woman who ruined you? For the woman carrying another man’s bastard?”

Ryan’s chest heaved. He didn’t think. His palm struck again, a second slap ringing louder than

the first.

“Ryan!”

Eve’s voice cut through the noise like lightning.

He froze, hand still half raised, ready for the third slap, head whipping toward her. She was running toward them now, her hair loose, the hem of her dress brushing her knees as she

pushed through the crowd. Her eyes were wide with shock, her face pale with disbelief.

“Stop!” she pleaded, her voice breaking. “Ryan, please!”

The crowd shifted uneasily, their murmurs rising. Some began to take out phones. Ryan lowered his hand slowly, his pulse pounding.

Kimberly’s lip trembled. For the first time, he saw tears forming in her eyes, not from pain, but

humiliation.

“You’ll regret taking her side,” she hissed. “You always do. She’s manipulating you again. Did she tell you how much I paid her to come back? Or how she was supposed to stay long enough to,”

“Enough!” Ryan’s voice boomed, cutting her off.

The world seemed to tilt, the noise fading around them. Eve stood frozen a few steps away, her hand pressed to her chest, her eyes brimming with tears.

Kimberly smirked through her tears, her tone venomous. “She didn’t tell you? Of course she didn’t. She’s playing you, Ryan. She’s always been playing you.”

He took a slow step toward her. “Stop.”

“Why?” Kimberly shot back, wiping at the blood trickling down her temple. “Ask her why she suddenly came back after four months. Ask her who she met in Westwood before she decided to crawl home.”

Ryan’s jaw clenched. He said nothing.

He didn’t want to give her more ammunition. He could feel Eve’s eyes on him, watching, waiting for him to lash out again. He wanted to protect her, to shout the truth, to tell Kimberly that the child she mocked was his, but he couldn’t. Not here. Not now.

Kimberly saw his silence and smirked. “Thought so.”

Her tone turned icy, “You think she loves you? She doesn’t. She’s here because she needs something from you. Because I paid her to return. A gold-digger, as always.”

Ryan’s composure snapped. He took a step forward, his voice low and dangerous. “If you weren’t my sister, I’d have you arrested for slander.”

Kimberly’s laugh was sharp and bitter. “You already ruined your life once for her. Don’t say I didn’t warn you when she does it again.”

“Enough,” Ryan said again, quieter now, more final. His patience had burned to ash.

He took a deep breath and pointed toward the wrecked car. “Call a cab, Kim. Luan too. You both need to get checked out, but not by me. I’m done fixing your chaos.”
